that's not how it works if he gets amnestied. he still earns his existing contract, but it doesn't count against the cap for OKC. OKC is only absolved of the portion the other team pays. if he is claimed off waivers, there is a bidding process i believe. if he clears waivers, he can sign for a new deal anywhere. such a deal is not likely to be more than a vet min for the remainder of his current contract.

CP3 is not going to sign a long-term MLE deal. a team could conceivably give him one more big money deal right now, which OKC would love because it would eat into their responsibility for the next 2 years.

anyone please jump in and correct me if i have this messed up.

Would you consider our offseason successful if the Knicks went all in on CP3, Oladepo, and Drummand? Just combining the rumours but to tell the truth its actually possible.

CP3
Oladipo
RJ
Onyeka
Drummond

Of course we trade a lot of our youth (knox, Frank, DSJ) and picks (Dallas) to get both CP and Oladepo. But I'm all for it.

I think I would prefer to "tank" for one more season. we are in a great spot right now with picks and cap relief, something this franchise has not had in a long time. Oladipo really intrigues me, but I wish we got to see a little more of him coming off his injury. The goal needs to be to build a championship caliber team.

Give me one out of each of those groups for SG and PF and Barrett moves to SF, where he needs to be playing, right between shooters at SG and PF and i'm pretty happy. If it's one of the guys we'd have to trade anything for then i do what i can to keep our 2020 lottery pick to get us a PG, L.Ball or T.Haliburton and put the Clippers and Dallas 1st round picks on the table along with whatever 2nd round picks are needed and all players but RJ, Mitch and i'd really like to keep Frank and Dotson but in the right deal i'd trade either.

Looks good to me, that's what I would do as well. Fournier could be another option for SG, might be a good fit with RJ, scored 18.8 ppg on 40.6% 3pt shooting last year and also played with Frank on the french team. We were once again near last in 3s, probably last once we got rid of morris, we we need to throw some bags at elite level shooters

edit: fournier might not be possible I see he has a player option and with the salary cap drop they may all opt-in to those player options

Here lies the problems, fans say tank for another year, but were not seeing that from our franchise. Our players this year were not trying to lose for the #1 draft pick. With decent pickups this year whether it's Haliburton, Cole, Hayes, or Ball they are still upgrades from what we have. So that means more improvements and a better record. Do you really trust that we can get a top pick after what we've seen?

Players never try to lose though. Tanking comes from the GM's and maybe sometimes coaches but players will never purposely try to lose games.

Yes, because we still probably won't be good enough to make the playoffs and with the new draft rules we are in play for one of the top picks even if we win some games. And then even if we don't it's okay because next years draft is stacked and we could get a great player anywhere in the lotto

Teams are sometimes allowed to save money by setting off a portion of whatever the player’s new contract is, but the right to set-off is usually waived as part of buyout negotiations.

https://www.sbnation.com/2018/2/9/16994790/nba-free-agency-nba-buyout-market-explained-how-do-contract-buyouts-work

Seems it's a contractual stipulation rather than written into the CBA. Unless Paul were willing to take a reduced buyout (which I guess might happen in the quantum of whatever he was sure to receive in free agency), I would imagine the ability to set-off would remain and OKC would stand to benefit if a team paid up for Paul. It would be beneficial for a team wanting Paul's services to offer him a larger contract, but it would likely need to be at least a 3 year deal to make it a financial decision for Paul.

Here is how the Amnesty worked under the previous CBA.

69. What is the Amnesty provision? (2011 CBA FAQ)

In order to submit a bid for a partial waiver claim, the bidding team must have cap room equivalent to the portion of their bid that would be charged to team salary in that season, plus the amount of any likely bonuses (see question number 74) for that season. If necessary, teams can create this cap room by waiving non-guaranteed players, but not by making trades. The team must make the cap room available immediately upon being awarded the amnesty claim.

I would expect the Players Association to push for as much freedom as possible with a new Amnesty provision while the owners are going to want to be as frugal as possible and want a claiming/bidding process as was in the 2011 CBA.

Here is an example from the past when the Lakers "won" Boozer after Chicago used the Amnesty provision on him.

Reports: Lakers win Carlos Boozer amnesty waiver bid Lakers pick up veteran big man after he was waived by the Bulls

Multiple outlets report that the Lakers have won the amnesty auction for Carlos Boozer, who was waived by the Bulls using the amnesty provision. That means the Lakers outbid other teams for Boozer's services.

It's a cheap option, though, and it gives Kobe Bryant a big he won't want to punch in the face three times a game. ESPN reports that it's a $3.2 million winning bid for the last year of his contract.

Marc Stein

@TheSteinLine
That means Lakers acquire Boozer's expiring contract and Chicago is on the hook for the rest of Boozer's salary in 2014-15: $13.6 million

I am not sure that OKC will use amnesty on Chris Paul. If they do, the expectation is that he would want to go to LA to be with his friend LeBron. Because of existing contracts and the cap hold for Davis, the Lakers will be limited on how much they can bid if Chris Paul is amnestied by OKC. For the Knicks or another team to beat the offer from the Lakers, determine the best bid/offer that LAL can make and then bid a little higher.

Somewhere along the lines of portis/Knox/Dallas pick for Victor. Randle/ellington/DSJ/Frank and fillers for Paul.

So one more year of hoping and praying we lose but get mad when we do. Another year where nobody improves. Another year where we're mad at our draft position praying that we dont drop, and also another year of praying we dont pick another Knox, missing out on a Durant picked just before him?

No I still think we should hope for a lot of individual player improvement but I just don't think that will be good enough to make the playoffs. They can improve and have a better record and still be a lottery team. It won't be a tank but realistically the team still will not be that good. If people want to get mad about wins and losses or draft position that's up to them but it won't have any impact on what actually happens.

There's not much choice. Most likely we are going to suck no matter what. If we try to make the wrong win now type moves it will just backfire and set us back like it always does.

I do think we should try to make some improvements...bring in better fitting players that compliment our younger players so they are in a better position...But expecting we will be in the lottery again next year and dont really want to add any long term investments (mostly cause not many difference makers available).

Yea, it does not make much sense for OKC to amnesty Paul right now. Even financially, they still have to pay CP3 so it does not really save them money unless they are get in the tax. They could possibly save the amnesty and use it next season if needed, or look for a trade first.

cp3 will tear something in his 35 year old knee like 10 games into the season after we give up assets for him

i don't get why anybody wants him. it's not like he has championship dna or anything

this is like giving up assets to bring in old jason kidd for 2 years but also pay him 85 million dollars during a time the salary cap is about to be reduced

we should be getting multiple 1sts to take on this disaster

The only way CP3 should be on this roster next year is if their is any amnesty buy-out and we get him on a 1 year deal for cheap. Andre Drummond would be a contract that we would regret down the road. Like I said, I would be intrigued with Oladipo, but with our luck he will never recover fully from that knee injury.
