MGM Resorts has proposed the NBA finish its basketball season in Las Vegas in a "bubble city" on the Strip. Mandalay Bay would serve as the "bubble"; it has three hotels (MBay, Delano, and Four Seasons), with all the accompanying hospitality amenities, to host the players and their families and whatever media is permitted. And the games could be played at the MBay Events Center, home of the WNBA Aces, where, the proposal suggests, up to 24 temporary basketball courts could be constructed, five to telecast games, the others for practice.
In addition, the bubble could be expanded if necessary: Games could also be hosted by the MGM Grand Garden or even the Thomas & Mack Center, both within easy traveling distance. And all have facilities for team representatives to meet with the media -- in particular, at a distance deemed safe.
Similar arrangements could be made in Orlando and the east-west scenario makes sense to limit travel for all the people involved. Also, Disney owns ABC in its entirety and 80% of ESPN, both of which televise NBA games.

This sounds reasonable. Obviously the whole system breaks if some official catches the virus but this seems to be the best solution out there. I wonder what they'd do with remaining east vs. west games if they want to continue the regular season.

If the final episodes of "The Last Dance" tonight do not address Herr Jordan's outsized denim fetish or the time he decided to wear facial hair in the style of modern history's greatest monster, it will be an opportunity squandered. I'm obligated to watch all the 30-for-30s, but this has been an overwrought piece of apologia for someone whose image has been labeled hand's off for close to full four decades.
He still the goat.
Anyway, "Birth of Big Air" is the best episode of 30-for-30 that is never mentioned as being among the best episodes, and the Lakers-Celtics triptych is borderline awful. Not sure who outside of your garden variety Massholes needed to hear Donnie Wahlberg refer to the vile Celtics as "we" throughout the 5+ hour running time, but it was a questionable choice. And ML Carr can drink a glass of expired milk, there I said it. Really, I should probably just the watch Dock Ellis flick "No-No" again. Expertly done, great music, goes way beyond the acid-fueled exploits and has hard-won pathos. Pathos, not green-screen shenanigans with cartoons! You do remember what it's like to have real emotions, don't you, don't you.

Very familiar with the Mandalay Bay property. Sure, would be great for most anything. But not to host 500 NBA players, since the world of Vegas is directly outside one of the 528 doors at the complex.
There is just no way you keep the players in and the curious public out there like you can at Disney.

Is it really necessary to keep these guys and their families locked up like prisoners? Its not like they could stop them from leaving Disney if they wanted to leave and I doubt Disney is going to stay totally shutdown either. I think if they do restart the season there has to be some acceptance and even expectation that you might lose some players along the way to positive tests because if one positive can upend the whole thing then we may as well cancel the season, that's way too much risk.

Unfortunately, it was MJ who had final say on the release. Everything was curated to how he saw things and wanted them to be presented. That image is even more hands off than normal in this doc.

They've said they will keep playing after a positive test.JayMKE wrote:Is it really necessary to keep these guys and their families locked up like prisoners? Personally if I were a player I would want rules that guys can't leave because I'd want the least chance possible that myself or a teammate would it catch and not be able to play and ruin a chance of winning a title. All the work and sacrifice to get in that position down the drain because some dude needed to hit a strip club would piss me off if I was a player. Frankly hanging in a resort with family and teammates while playing every other day really doesn't sound like a horrible experience.

so 40% of the teams are going to show up and half-ass their play to just collect a check? I can't see the bottom ten teams putting in any effort whatsoever for two weeks of free money.
How is it any different from any other season. Teams tank. Some players on tanking teams pad stats to help with their next contract.

I said it. The candid footage is great, but it was pedestrian otherwise. Just because it was epic length doesn't make it an epic. MJ having final say adversely affects the final product and to use Jordan as the trusted narrative voice is a fatally misguided decision. Big ups to Hehir for not putting Stacey King on screen, credit where due.

Must have hallucinated the whole time in DC, Wizznutzz was nothing but a whippet-fueled fever dream, the cake tossed by Kwame Brown was illusory, Rod Strickland didn't refund a half-smoke at half-court, he had the flu.
Can we at least talk about how Michael Jeffrey Jordan's eyes are the same color as cloudy piss? Go on and marinate on that for a minute.

This series was called "The Last Dance". It was about Jordan and that Bulls' team and it's legacy. So that was his last shot....as a Bull.
This was a great series.

This was not a great series. It was apologia for a monster whose competitiveness warped the next generation of incoming superstars who believed being a raging **** was proof they had a burning will to win. I get it: dunks are fun, check the scoreboard, rings rings rings, etc etc etc but all "The Last Dance" proved was how hard up we all were for "original" sports content even if it's ghostwritten by Dave Falk. Wake me up when the multi-episode series on Michael Ray Richardson is set to air. The damn second Utah series was treated as an afterthought even though the doc was titled "The Last Dance." Who knew Jeff Hornacek would not prove a compelling foil to the Jordan legend. Oh, maybe anybody who witnessed it in real time.

I DO think it was good, particularly for generations that were too young during these runs. I started as a Bulls fan during Jason Kidd's rookie season. I explicitly remember watching the game in a side room during a Thanksgiving Celebration when my uncle was in town.
With that being said, there wasn't a whole lot that was earth shattering it DID paint Jordan in this positive light he probably doesn't deserve. It could have been much more interesting, but THIS wasn't going to be the one that was better given the Jordan influence.
