Big men with foot problems are never a good thing. I think we should sit him for the rest of the season. We aren't making the playoffs and Dedmon will be just fine for us right now.

It’s not clear when Capela’s initial injury in Houston occurred. The Rockets ended 2019 on an eight-day, four-game road trip, and that’s when his heel started to feel worse. During those first three games, Capela averaged nearly 40 minutes per game before playing 29 on Christmas Day. He sat out the following two games with what the Rockets called “heel soreness.” He then came back and played the next three games, including playing 36 minutes against the Hawks when he had 22 points and 11 rebounds.

Houston’s following game after Atlanta was against Oklahoma City on Jan. 9, the second night of a back-to-back. That’s when it was clear that Capela was fighting lots of pain. He looked exasperated and could be seen massaging his heel. He was slow in every aspect of that game against the Thunder. He missed the following game and then played in eight straight games before missing three out of four after that stretch.....the decision by Capela and the Rockets to play through his heel soreness is likely the reason it progressively got worse.

“Rest and therapy are the ways we treat this,” Jung said. “If you rush back too soon — the injury comes from overuse. If you come back too soon, and there hasn’t been adequate rest and the tissue hasn’t recovered, the symptoms will flare up again.

Capela told the Hawks that he felt like he came back too soon for the Rockets, and that’s why he ended up hurting himself worse than the initial injury. That’s why Atlanta is being cautious with his recovery now.

Looking for a silver lining to all of this craziness, If/when the season resumes in a month or whenever, Capela and Skal should be fully healed and ready to play.

Atlanta Hawks: How Will Clint Capela Fit In?

The Atlanta Hawks gave up the Brooklyn Nets' first-round pick, a 2026 second-round pick and Evan Turner to get Clint Capela from the Houston Rockets in a four-team deal at the trade deadline. Two months later, we still have no idea how he fits on the roster.

Capela had been sidelined with plantar fasciitis and a bone bruise in his heel since Jan. 29 and was scheduled to be reevaluated March 18. At that point there would have only been 13 games left on Atlanta's schedule.

Since the team is stocked with young talent at the four other positions, Atlanta's trade for the 25-year-old Capela made sense. He averaged 14.9 points, 12.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks per game and shot 64.5 percent from the field in Houston over the past three years, playing strong defense that should help the Hawks' No. 28 ranking (114.8 rating) in the category.

Spacing could become an issue given Capela's lack of shooting, but power forward John Collins is up to a career-high 40.1 percent mark from three to help ease any concerns.

Depending on the severity of Capela's injuries, we may not get our answer until next season.

“I’m feeling pretty good,” Capela said. “I’m going to keep doing what the medical staff is saying. I think they’ve been doing a pretty good job. I feel pretty good, honestly. I’m not 100 percent yet. It’s getting better, so I’m optimistic about it.”

“I call every now and then, and they check on me to see how I’m doing and how I’m feeling,” Capela said of his virtual rehab process. “If they need to do any adjustments, I just let them know. If I feel good about exercises, I let them know. I do a report once a week to let them know and make sure the exercises are good. If I feel good about it and if we decide to move forward with the exercises because I’m feeling better about it — that’s pretty much how it works.”

Finding the right trade for Rudy Gobert

If they’re looking to lock in an affordable center now, a deal with Atlanta featuring Clint Capela makes a lot of sense. Although the Hawks just acquired Capela, they could look to upgrade again at center, provided they attach a pick and/or young player in the package. Capela plays a similar style as Gobert offensively and is a great rebounder, shot-blocker, and rim-protector. He might be the most cost-effective replacement for Gobert with $51.3 million owed to him over the next three seasons.

There's no guarantee the Hawks will even play if the league opens back up, but Hawks president and GM Travis Schlenk hopes his team gets the chance. "Our guys are excited about the opportunity to get back to it," Schlenk said. "Clint says he's feeling better, and there's a possibility that we can get him back on the court. Practicing and playing five games would be valuable to us." Capela hasn't played since Jan. 29 and it's understandable that the Hawks would like to see their newly-acquired center play alongside Trae Young, John Collins and company. Fantasy owners should be particularly attuned to the impact Capela might have on Collins, who will inevitably earn fewer minutes at the center position.

Hawks GM Travis Schlenk says that he's excited about the Hawks possibly getting to play the last five games of their season in hopes of seeing Clint Capela play with guys like Trae Young and John Collins.

"Our guys are excited about the opportunity to get back to it," Schlenk told ESPN. "It has importance for us. We're a young team, and because of injuries and some other things this season, we didn't get to see them all together. Clint [Capela] says he's feeling better, and there's a possibility that we can get him back on the court. Practicing and playing five games would be valuable to us." Capela, who has yet to debut for the Hawks after being traded to Atlanta from Houston, hasn't played since suffering a serious heel injury in December. And while he's not completely healthy yet, there's a chance he could get some run if the Hawks are allowed to play out the final five games of this season.

That's great news.
I hope he gets time with all or some of the players this off-season to get things flowing on the court. We need everyone to be ready for next season and to be focused on making the playoffs. GO HAWKS!!

Are Skal and Capela any where near as good as their stats indicate? Will their talents really show up when they don their Hawk uniforms? Is it really possible that either of these new Hawks will make Atlanta better?

Last season, we all saw the old adage come true: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong."

Cursed, snake bit or whatever you wish to call it, the Hawks were hit, right between the eyes. Early, the 25 game suspention to the late, being uninvited to the bubble play.

Still, we wonder about our draft pick or picks, and free agent or trade that Atlanta might make. Our new 2020-21 season is so far away. We always hear, and will again, how much all the other eastern NBA teams have improved and how the Hawks will have a hard time improving their record. Yet, they wish to trade for our players! Oh, well. Time will tell.
