GMs Strongly Prefer Play-In Tournament Over Group Stage Concept

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri May 29, 2020 1:35 am

Adam Silver held a conference call with general managers on Thursday to review the results of a survey delivered to teams last week regarding potential formats to resume the 19-20 season.

“There was zero commitment to any one plan,” a general manager told The Ringer over the phone. “But it was a call to gather more information.”

Half of the NBA's general managers voted to go straight to the playoffs and cancel the remainder of there regular season, while just over half of GMs voted to reseed the playoffs 1 to 16 without factoring in conference.

About 75 percent of teams voted in favor of a play-in tournament, sources said, while 25 percent of teams voted in favor of the group stage.

“Adam isn’t taking the results seriously,” a team executive told The Ringer earlier in the week. “Every team is obviously gonna vote for what’s best for them.”

So, every Western conference team plus one Eastern conference team? Who was the traitor?

The Bucks, Lakers and Raptors round out the top three teams in the league...

Hard to buy any of the results... Even the 75% support for a play-in tournament needs to be understood in the context of the other multiple choice options for that question.

Why is this so hard? Just look at the standings.

Eastern conference 1-8 is set. Wizards are so far out, there's no way they would get in, even in an 82 game schedule
Western conference 1-7 is set. Grizzlies lead a pack of 4 teams (SAS, SAC, POR, NOP) by 3 or 4 games.

So the solution is ridiculously simple:

Let SAS/SAC/POR/NOP have a mini play-in tournament, and then the winner plays the Grizzlies for 8th seed. Voila. Done. Fair. That keeps the integrity and spirit of the 82-game schedule/standing AND gets Zion into the bubble.

All we're really talking about here is how to deal with the 8th seed in the West. The only team that has a tiny gripe is the Grizzlies, but WTF.... it's a small price to bring the NBA back and even then, the Grizz still have to be thrilled with how their season went anyway.

So why TF is the NBA wasting so much time talking about this Euro group stage BS? Adam Silver needs to drop that Euro fetish and stop tinkering with the game. People are STARVED for live pro sports.... you don't need any gimmick BS at this point to get people to watch NBA basketball. I've been watching live chess tournaments, ffs. lol.

Nah, this aint 5 years ago. The East has 5-6 teams no one would want to face in the 1st rd and the West has the same (toss up is if you count the Mavs and Pacers there). The East's top 5 are probably scarier than the West's top 5, and the East has two weak links in the playoffs (Nets and Magic) while the Grizzlies are at the only team at that level in the West. I'd probably say the west is slightly tougher because of star power, but it's very close.

Because they are analyzing profit models. Trust I care about basketball and the integrity of the game but they will look into whats most profitable to recoup lost profits. It's that simple. What ever they do maybe be dumb and un-pure but the NBA is a business and they value that far more highly than we do.
Being a Blazer fan isn't exactly healthy.
