Re: Official NBA Season Return Thread (UPDATE: Silver Announces July 31st as Return Date)
I'm just worried they are gonna come with some bunk schedule that doesn't factor in the fact we already played most of the toughest parts of our schedule. Starting with only 20 or 22 teams means every team is gonna be trying to make the playoffs, are we gonna have our playoff seeding effected by playing some unfairly scheduled games months after the actual season has effectively ended? IMO we should be locked into the 2nd best record in the east and the 3rd best in the NBA.

If the start date is as late as July 31st this whole thing isn’t over until October. Those 8 games and play-in tournament takes them until August 17th at least unless the are scheduling back to backs. Then each round takes up to two weeks if they play every second day. I never thought they would go as late as October 15th but that seems like what they are thinking.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Seems to me like Silver is going to spend the week leading up to Thursday hammering out the dates as well as logistics with travel, testing, playing etc.
KOC saying January sounds a little too late to me. But then again, starting at Christmas does ensure these guys get about 2.5 months off.
You also have to consider that March 9th to July 31st is about 4.5 months. So let's say they play till Oct 15th and they start again at Christmas, that's 2-2.5 months of basketball that's 2 months of basketball over a 9-9.5 month period. That's plenty of rest in my mind

The NBAPA pushin for several regular season games ... along with the higher seeds in the NBA. They want a tune up before the playoffs.
Several could mean 8-10 games. So that would happen first. Then the play in tournament for 7-11 seeds in each conference (If they go the 22 team route.)
Then I assume they would do the 18 team bracket style for the championship.
I think this may work... I guess they will be going into October then. The regular season games will take 2 - 2.5 weeks is my guess. 4 games a week.

Re: Official NBA Season Return Thread (UPDATE: Silver Announces July 31st as Return Date)
The 20-22 team thing seems like a weird middle ground to me. They want to televise more games to make more money, so they're already throwing the optimal quarantine conditions out the window. They're already having a 2nd truncated regular season, months later than when a normal season would have already ended. Why not just all 30 teams? Lord knows the Knicks and Warriors would draw some ratings.
They could have picked an elegant solution like every team just playing out the last 5-8 games of their original schedule. So it would be as if the ~10 games starting in March just got wiped out by covid, but the rest remained. Raptors would have played:
Wizards
Hornets
Hawks
Knicks
Heat
Magic
to get to 70 games. Pretty good "tune up" to me, to avoid injuries and bank 4-5 safe wins.
Instead we'll get games against a more competitive pool of teams, which is fine I guess. But it increases the injury risk for games that literally only affect seeding, in the Eastern conference's case. As some of you have alluded, it's like the Raptors are a bit punished for already playing the tough part of their schedule. What will they be scheduled for now, Milwaukee Boston Miami back to back? 3rd games this season against some West teams?

Definitely strange to have 6 extra teams invited but 5 of them from the West and then only have 5 team competing for one position out West and 3 competing for 2 spots in the East.
I think there is a chance that it could end up being some kind of hybrid crossover model.
Throw every team under Dallas in the league standings (14-22) in a group.
Each team plays each other once. total 8 games each. The records in pool play get added to the existing regular season records.
Top team in pool play becomes the 7th seed in the East. (our 1st round opponent)
2nd place team in pool play becomes 8th seed in the West. (Lakers opponent)
3rd and 4th place teams in pool play, play single elimination for 8th in the East (Bucks opponent)
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

The obsession with getting Zion Williamson to play a few games during a pandemic before his team gets eliminated is an odd one.
Not sure what would have been so hard about just taking 16 teams.

A season resume is interesting. Wonder how far back the next season will get pushed. I guess NFL will get full attention from me finally!
2019 Eastern Conference All Stars
Derozan
Lowry
Ibaka
Valanciunas
Van Vleet
Delon Wright
Lebron
Embiid
There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Re: Official NBA Season Return Thread (UPDATE: Silver Announces July 31st as Return Date)
Between now and Thursday's vote of the Board of Governors on the plan to re-start the season, the NBA is working to complete the details of a 22-team format for Orlando.
A three-fourths majority of the 30 teams is required for a plan's passage, but owners expect unanimous support for whatever form the NBA's final proposal takes, sources said. They are lining up behind Silver to back the league and NBPA's ultimate plan --- even as they wait on the final details to be agreed upon with the National Basketball Players Association.
The mechanics of potential play-in tournaments in both conferences in any 22-team resumption are still at issue as the league enters the final stages prior to Thursday's vote. There is still uncertainty over how much of an advantage -- if any -- the team who finishes the truncated regular-season in eighth might receive entering the play-in tournament.
The simplest example: What if Brooklyn and Orlando -- now in seventh and eighth, respectively -- win half their remaining games, and the ninth-placed Wizards skid to something like a 2-6 finish (in scenarios that include eight more regular-season games)?
That would leave Washington 8 games behind the No. 8 seed entering the play-in. Should Washington have to beat the No. 8 team at least twice in a row to secure the No. 8 seed? How many times? And what happens if Washington closes the gap with No. 8 during the truncated regular-season?
Should the NBA have multiple play-in scenarios ready for the East depending on how those remaining regular-season games go?
The play-in situation in the West in any 22-team scenario would be more crowded, likely including five teams -- Portland, New Orleans, San Antonio, Sacramento, and Phoenix -- alongside the current No. 8-seeded Grizzlies. If Memphis maintains its solid cushion -- at 3 1/2 games when the NBA suspended the season -- should it have an easier, and perhaps shorter, path to winning the play-in than those other five teams?
The financial elements of the plan are significant for the league too --- with the 22-team format worth several hundred million dollars more in revenue than 16-team straight-to-playoffs plan would, sources said.
On the back end of Friday's owner's meeting with Silver, several owners - including Philadelphia's Josh Harris and Phoenix's Robert Sarver - enthusiastically backed Bennett's call for the league to come together for as many teams as possible.
Already, the NBA knew how passionate Atlanta owner Tony Ressler felt on the issue of the Hawks' inclusion into Orlando. He reiterated on the call after Bennett's speech that his franchise wanted to resume the season -- provided some reassurances, to the degree any were possible, that the NBA could maintain player health and safety while adding teams. Ressler did not explicitly link the Hawks participation to any path for Atlanta to the playoffs, sources said, and attendees took that to mean Ressler supported Atlanta's playing even without such a path.
Golden State's Joe Lacob told peers that the Warriors were willing to participate that way too, although his franchise has been far more cool to the idea in private, sources said.
The Hawks and Warriors are two lottery teams with far different realities: A small market Southern city in a rebuild contrasted with the massive resources of a big market reloading its roster with healthy All-Stars for a 2020-2021 playoff run.
Even if Silver wanted to include 30 teams into the NBA's restart, he reminded those on the call that there are some franchises --- and players too - far less invested into the risks and rewards of several weeks of training camp and quarantine to simply play several regular-season games, sources said. The issue of health and safety with 30 teams --- and the hundreds of additional people that could become carriers of the coronavirus - had impacted that process too.
If the NBA ends up settling on the 22-team format, at least some of the remaining eight teams will push for some form of training camp over the summer, sources said. Franchises fear being apart from their players for as long as eight or nine months.
