A play-in tournament could result in nine Western Conference teams participating in a 16-team playoff, according to Marc Berman of the New York Post. A 22-team format appears to be the most popular plan for the resumption of play. According to Berman, the six extra teams may compete with the two current No. 8 seeds from each conference in an eight-team, single-elimination tournament. Washington would be the only Eastern Conference team among that group of six extra teams.

With all the stuff that’s still continuing in America right now & the fact that if we do return in August it will be 5 months since they stopped playing I just find it absolutely ridiculous as to why we wouldn’t just wait 2 months & have a full season ?
From missing 5 months of basketball where a lot of players couldn’t train for a good portion of it to go straight into the playoffs is just asking for injuries that wouldn’t usually occur.
Most players right now don’t even have basketball on their mind right now anyway so why not just wait ? A lot of people are saying we need to crown a champion this season but is it really this season anymore after such a long time out ? Don’t think the NBA will do anything it can to get Lebron another ring ? not only for ratings but the narrative that they’d love to portray after all the events this year ? If you don’t think they’d do it just look back at the game 6 of the 2002 WCF. Knowing how much money they’ve already lost would it really surprise anyone if they did anything to make this happen ?
I get I might be reaching but restarting the season this late just doesn’t feel right.
$$$$$$$$$$ vs $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
I tend to agree, but I'll watch if they do it.
Anyone saying it's about anything but money is just lying. But, that's what businesses do.
It'd be the first year in 74 that there's no playoffs and championship awarded, if they skip it.
If there's a trophy, there's a chance that we win it.
I'm greedy. Give me that any day over the sanctity of next season being closer to normal length and on a normal schedule.
(note: I think both of those scenarios are very unlikely anyway, I think they're planning for end of July so that there's plenty of time to bail if there's a resurgence of cases over the next two months, which is likely).
I'm all for a chance at #18. I really don't care about the sanctity of the season, nor if the NBA loses a 74 year streak. If they play games, I'll watch. If they don't, I'll be outside more. It's all good either way.
The big thing is what's the plan for when one person catches it? Or 10? Or 50? Or 100? Some number has to be OK or they shouldn't even bother. But, some number has to be not OK, too. If you bailed on the 19-20 season and still pushed back 20-21 to Dec, they'd have a lot less to worry about after the expected 2nd flu season spike in fall. I'm a fan of most stuff starting up with the option to call for distancing measures again if #s spike, and determine that locally. So, if they think they can sneak it in and do that, great. But, the far easier, safer approach would be to not finish this season. And the main reason TO finish it is $, imo, which I don't think is going out on a limb or anything.
Weirdly, to me the NBA shutting down was one of the things that made the virus feel real. If they open again and make it work, that's a great sign as well. If they open and have to shut down again, that sucks.

If this comes true, then it means that beyond the top 8 seeds, in each Conference.
5 more teams from the West, and only the Wizards from the East, will be in the "Tournament".
Any chance that Memphis gets bumped out of the playoffs under this plan?
Yes, that's the whole point of having the extra 6 teams
No, I understand that. I guess I should have said is there any real chance that they get bumped?

Healthy Portland probably gets in. Conceivably they have Nurkic & Collins back. And that Dame guy is pretty good in the playoffs.
Wiz, Suns probably have no chance.
One of Grizz, Nets, Pellies, Spurs, Magic also makes it in my scenario. Maybe Kyrie helps us out finally? Maybe league Zion-lust does?

This will be like an Advanced Summer League.
Then I guess, that the actual Summer League, is going to be the Fall League this year?

9.5 months without playing, for the Bottom 8 teams.
Hiatus would be from March 11 - December 25. That's tough.

^^ Pretty good sched, except we really can't move from the 3 seed - unless Toronto have a total meltdown.

Toronto's schedule is brutal (if this schedule idea holds)
Sixers, Celtics, Denver, Lakers, Grizzlies x2, Bucks x2

Re: Around the NBA (Non-Celtics) 2019-2020 Part II
Schedule format doesn't make sense. Explain how the Celtics can have an 8 team sample that doesn't include ORL but when you do that process with ORL they play BOS twice...

Even if they used the current NBA schedule to get the 22 teams to 8 games each, the following teams won't get to 8 games -- either because their opponents are already done with 8 of their own games by the time they meet or they don't have enough opponents that are part of the 22 teams in their schedule:
• LAC - needs one more game
• LAL - needs two more games
• ORL - needs two more games
• PHI - needs two more games
• POR - needs two more games
• TOR - needs one more game
I imagine those six teams will just have to face off each other to cover the deficit.
Example:
TOR vs. LAL
PHI vs. LAL
POR vs. ORL
POR vs. LAC
PHI vs. ORL
