The way the did the 8/9 play in makes a lot of sense. I was saying single elimination and double for 8 and 9 seeds. Gives 8th more insurance.

BOSTON -- Atlanta Hawks CEO Steve Koonin has a plan to increase the NBA's ratings: start and end the season two months later.

Koonin spoke Friday at the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference in Boston on a panel about possible changes to the league's schedule. The panel was moderated by ESPN's Kevin Arnovitz.

"Relevance equals revenue," Koonin said. "We've got to create the most relevance, and the revenue will fix itself.

Under Koonin's proposal, the start of the NBA season would shift from mid-October to mid-December, after college football has completed its regular season and has begun its bowl season. More important, the shift would allow the NBA to avoid having to compete with the NFL's regular season, as it currently does in the first 2½ months before the "unofficial" start to the league's calendar on Christmas Day.

NBA playoff predictions: Most likely seeds and best matchups
Meanwhile, the NBA Finals would take place sometime in August rather than June, with the draft and free agency to come after that. That would again allow the NBA to dominate more of the summer months, when it is going up against only Major League Baseball, instead of fighting with football for territory.

"A big piece is you don't have to reinvent the wheel to enhance ratings," Koonin said. "Sometimes, moving away from competition is a great way to grow ratings.

"If King Kong is at your door, you might go out the back door, rather than go out the front and engage in a hand-to-hand fight with King Kong. Many times, at the start of the NBA season, we are competing with arguably the best Thursday Night Football game with the NBA on TNT, our marquee broadcast, and we get crushed and we wonder why.

"It's because at the beginning of the season, there's very little relevance for the NBA. The relevance is now. That's when people are talking about it."

Yeah, I remember that. Never has a hypothetical proposal become the plan faster than in this case. What was the likelihood this ever happened without what has happened?

Who knows what the % is. But its a fact that the NBA shares airtime with the NFL. Its also a fact that the NFL is king in the US.

Based off those 2 facts, its not that far off to think the NBA would try to maximize their airtime without their direct NFL competition.

Would they make such a serious and league shifting call without Corona? I dont know, and tbh, I dont care. If Im an owner, there is nothing morally wrong with this and as a fan of a team with a very cold winter and very random Spring / Fall weather, this only benefits us.

hmm..i wonder who we are going to play in our 8 games. Gonna be a battle to keep the 2nd seed, given that we'll probably play a bunch of good teams.

I think we had at least one game remaining against Bucks, Boston, Heat and Lakers. So, I bet we will play all of them at least once.

The repeat is going to be amazing.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Absolutely agree but my point is that they will never shift it back when it is in place because it would take similar events to make them ever consider shifting it again. The fact that is better for the league and cold weather markets is just an added bonus.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Edit: Now that I think about it more clearly, East teams just play each other once each. done. If they are keeping conferences and the top seed in the league truly means nothing that I don't see why you play any interconference games at all. In the West it is more complicated.

This is what I'm worried about.

Easy peasy. We'd go something like 6-2 or 7-1.

with 8 bad teams dropped off in theory everybody will have to play a tough schedule. We should be able to hang on to our 2nd spot.

Basically 90 percent of our loses have come against good teams. It’ll be good practice to have all these elite teams a third time around.

We will be full heath for the first time in a long time.

Hopefully Gasol can get in shape fast. He is a difference maker in the playoffs both quarterbacking the O and anchoring the D.
