I was on the phone with my brother and I said "It might be good someone who represents state power to take an action that might help to calm the protests before it gets out of hand".
No, this isn't some white guy thing saying people can't protest. It was more an observation, and it was in the context of, the state is always going to assert it's right to law and order; it has to, to some degree, to maintain legitimacy.
Please don't misunderstand. They can only do it correctly in the context of acknowledging the wrongs, starting the dialogue that will effect real change. Otherwise, the attempt to maintain legitimacy will not be seen as legitimate.
Also, the context of the conversation was him expressing concern that the whole situation could go really bad, and all this was in the context of a greater conversation about Trump providing no leadership, and what he did provide was fanning the flames and amping police aggression.
So, I said "It might be good someone who represents state power to take an action that might help to calm the protests before it gets out of hand. Since it won't be the federal government, and while the protests are about national issues, maybe Minny can put the other cops up on murder charges as a first step in showing the nation that they take this issue seriously, and maybe it can be a first step towards dealing with the issues and help take the protests down a notch."
And then come over to here and see this happened 12 minutes ago.
Good to see. A first step.
