I saw him live a couple of times. Once I made a weekday road trip from Philly to NYC in the late '80s and saw him at The Lone Star Cafe (no longer around) in the Village. The other time was sometime post-2000 in Philadelphia. By that time, Link, sadly, has the old man's rock and roll shuffle. But he still sounded great.

I represented a young black man from West Philly for a minor criminal matter in "Community Court" which adjudicated the lowest level crimes. The cops charged my client with some low level criminal charge after they tuned him up. I don't recall the exact facts right now though I'm tempted to go back into my archieved files to find out. Anyhow, the cop had no idea that my client was coming in with a civil rights attorney. To make matters worse for the cop, he was in front of a no nonsense black female attorney from the streets who was in-house counsel for the Philadelphia Police Department while was practicing there. So we were on the same page, telepathically speaking. And the courtoom was packed that morning with defendants. The cop's story was that my client "tripped over his own feet while going up the cement stairs to the police district (precinct)." The audience busted out laughing. I never heard anything like that in my life. Then my client testified to how it actually happened and we got the audience showed him much love and then Judge Simmons tossed the case and sent the cop out with his tail between him legs. Then we sued the chit out of the City.

Oh they get the message loud and clear. Your trash President told them don’t be too nice and to knock the hell out of protestors.

Oh yeah, they got that message loud and clear during '16 GOP Primary and they've gotten more empowered with each passing travesty of justice and violation of the Constitution (this stuff has been going on for ages, really). The alt-right has now infiltrated our local law enforcement rank and file. As long as they continue to have that collective bargaining agreement to protect them, there's no accountability.

The labor arbitrators always split the baby and find some reason to let the officer/criminal back onto the force but with no back pay. That's the quid pro quo. However, it lets the cops know that if they can just wait it out, they'll get their jobs back. In the meantime, maybe their cop buddies help them out (so long as they keep their mouths shut) until they get back on the street.

There is a greater number of unhinged cops in the ranks these days. As I've said, probably many ex-military now treating us like insurgents. Trump has empowered them to grind us all into the dirt.

If this keeps up America will feel like Palestine

One thing is becoming clear these past two weeks. This has escalated from cop brutality against blacks to the Cops vs. Everyone. This has gone from racial profiling and killings to a flexing of fascist power in the face of everyone.

Not to be cynical, but maybe now that this is happening to whites too it will snap any of the remaining sleepers out of their trance when they realize this WWII German resistance saying applies to them:

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Congress is going to have to strip away their union protections with legislation. That won't happen while Trump and the Senate Republicans remain in control. It's about the local down ballots and primaries which are going on now. Get your absentee ballots. I just got mine for both the primary and the general.

They also need to pass police accountability legislation which creates some sort of scheme which offices of special prosecutors who are independent of the local county and state police departments around the nation. These offices would have subpoena and prosecutorial powers to arrest, charge, prosecute, and sentence cops for crimes proven beyond a reasonable doubt. They could also provide recommendations to terminate that officer's employment, even if they didn't prosecute.

If they don't like it, then maybe you're not cut out to be a police officer. Time to find something else to do. There are way too many police officers in this increasing militaristic country. So, I'm fine with shrinking our police departments. A fairly recent study said that approximately 50% of all police "incidents" are traffic related. Do we really need armed para-military officers responding so such ordinary occurrences, especially when they're paid about $150,000 per year, if not more with OT. But try making that kind of change here with the police unions holding our local politicians hostage.
