MLBPA Stands Firm Against Pay Cuts, Rejects League\'s Plan

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jun 5, 2020 12:47 pm

Major League Baseball players will not take another pay cut and have \"resoundingly rejected\" the league\'s plan to begin the season, according to a statement from Tony Clark.

The statement came after a two-hour conference call of the association\'s executive board and several other Major League Baseball Players Association player leaders on Thursday.

It came one day after the league rejected a proposal from the players to play 114 games with full prorated salaries.

The league wants a drastically reduced schedule in order for owners to be able to pay players on a per-game basis.

\"Earlier this week, Major League Baseball communicated its intention to schedule a dramatically shortened 2020 season unless players negotiate salary concessions,\" Clark said. \"The concessions being sought are in addition to billions in player salary reductions that have already been agreed upon.\"

Each team should just call up their minor leaguers and play with them for the season. Just get baseball going again. Any Major leaguer can play if they want, but they don't have to if they don't want to.

In the end this screws the low paid players the most. They're the ones who needs the money, even if it's pro-rated. The players don't realize that if they force the season to be cancelled, combined with the Astros scandal, baseball is going to take an extremely large hit going forward, maybe worse than '94.

I agree this will take years to recover from and they don’t got steroids to fix it this time around. Owners need to wake up because it’s not always the players of who have to concede. They have made loads of money. If the minor leagues played that would make them ineligible for the future to be apart of the MLBPA being a scab regardless of its a strike or not at the present time they would be doing it to screw over the players who are trying to make an agreement.

Obviously both sides need to compromise but it seems the players are the most unwilling partner right now. I don't possibly see how they could run anything close to a regular season this year and ticket sales are a bigger part of baseball revenue than the other three major sports. Nobody is going to get paid anything close to normal and it's likely the MLB will be losing an incredible amount of money as whole. The owners can't shoulder that by themselves. I don't see how players can expect to get anything close to their current salaries at the very least for this season.

It's really sad that baseball has come to this. But at the same time, the dynamics of pro baseball has allowed this. The players may be stubborn to an extreme fault, but the same can be said about the owners as well. You could be one of the most horribly managed and operated baseball teams and at the end of the day, you could still be profitable thanks to revenue sharing(Orioles, Marlins under Loria, Pirates, Mets under Fred Wilpon AKA Mr. Coupon, Mariners, etc.). When there's no incentive needed to put on a better product, this is what you get.

P.S. in light of the Astros scandal, the Nationals winning the title makes it so much sweeter and the fact that Rob Manfred is a spineless toad with regards to the botched handling of the investigation and referring the WS trophy as a clunk of metal is going to take potentially years to recover from.
