Right, I'm no lawyer, but Wikipedia told me... the Supremes ruled 5 to 4 in Nixon vs. Fitzgerald that the Prez is immune from civil suits - so ya can't sue him for libel or slander - though the court emphasized that the Prez is not immune from criminal charges.

Now, his surrogates don't have that immunity from being sued. That's why you'll probably see them stay quiet about Gugino - since he's not a public figure.

What did he expect - kid's got no experience. Just because he's almost as psycho as his father-in-law doesn't make him qualified. He's just daddy's little girl's little boy. There's zero other reason he's where he is. What the WH really needs, other than a real President - is a general manager to put the right people in the right jobs. Trump's done a horrific job at that.

how messed up is it that dems were too cowardly to nominate sanders or warren and decided to trot out biden as the safe play and it ends up playing out what most ppl already knew - the anti-trump sentiment is the driving force of the blue wave, not joe's charisma or whatever...

only to realize that it isn't cowardice that led to this at all but rather a concerted effort by dem leadership to keep the party centrist because of corporate donor finance reasons.

we had a nation ripe for sweeping social change and the opportunity to seize the political capital necessary to enact those changes, and whiffed to try and recapture the status quo of 2008-2015. that is by definition conservatism. liberalism strives for a world better than what was in the rear view.

student loan reform. wall street reform. health care reform. social welfare. prison reform. police reform. tax reform. election reform. green new deal. infrastructure. all on the table, and require big brains and big balls to tackle, and we have to settle on joe freakin biden.

My perspective on how this all came about is that absolutely no one wanted Biden but they wanted Sanders even less, Dems threw a whole bunch of spaghetti on the wall hoping someone, anyone would end up getting more support than Sanders, and turned to Biden at the last second because Warren wasn't getting it done.

If any of the progressives other than Sanders was leading the polls they'd be the nominee now. So I don't perceive it as a big neoliberal conspiracy against progressives. Sanders burned a lot of bridges in 2016 and a lot of Dems just would not support him under any circumstances. My wife being one of them.

The fact that the black vote ended up favoring Biden was the nail in the coffin I think. Older black voters supported Biden, younger black voters supported Sanders, primary showed that the young vote wasn't turning out, bam Biden's the nominee.

Yup, the Southern states in the last few primaries have decided the elections for Obama, Clinton, and now Biden. Plus Sanders wasn't likely to win Northeast states once it became head to head between Biden and Sanders.

I think if Sanders was 2nd by the time Super Tuesday among progressives, he would have dropped out and endorsed Warren. For whatever the reason, Sanders could not get Warren to concede and endorse him.

- Perhaps she actually thought she could pull off an upset, although at the time, it looked she was just playing a spoiler.
- It may speak of Sanders lack of ability to build coalition with democrats. Perhaps he could have promised the VP position to Warren. Many suggested he should have positioned himself more to the center after the first 4 primaries.
- Or simply as others have suggested, money drove the campaigns of Pete, Amy, and even Warren and they stood in line to endorse Biden who may have made promises
- Or Warren was just delusional about her chances before the primary
- Warren supporters also seemed unwilling to even switch to Bernie even though her policies lineup more with Sanders. That being said, I think Warren would have been wise to endorse Sanders if she wanted to maximize her chances in winning in future elections. I don't recall meeting a Biden supporter whose second choice was Warren. Warren was often Sanders' supporters second choice but she may risk losing them in future elections in 2024/2028, but perhaps Warren didn't see herself running, at least in this moment.

I don't know... Biden is absolutely the last guy I would pick to push the progressive agenda.

It's actually really bad - the Dems might hold the house, Senate, and POTUS this November, and again (like in 2008) probably for just two years. If they get the senate, they need to govern like their hair is literally on fire because you don't know how long it's going to last. And the person we've appointed to lead us through this critically important moment in history is ... Joe Biden.

UUUUUUUUUUUUGH.

Lol, I almost feel like I have to apologize here for being a Biden guy. But I think there's a whole lot more Biden guys then you seem to think there are. One good quality he has that probably none of the progs has shown is the ability to compromise. He also understands that when he wins, he's not going to be the King. He's going to work with the leaders in his party, and he'll do it willingly.

I see or hope Biden as more teachable and leadable, certainly than Sanders. If you can make
a strong well supported argument for your policy, his mind is malleable.

this year? Normally the terms of the Senators from a given state don’t coincide.

Edit to add - the NYT did not get it wrong (foolish of me).
Their terms don’t coincide but both seats are up this year after
that Toadie who’s husband is the head of the NYSE was appointeto fill
a vacant seat. And is the counter example to Burr is how to avoid
criminal prosecution from Barr’s DOJ.
