Broussard: Those who criticized Kyrie Irving & Avery Bradley owe them apology
NBA commissioner Adam Silver has said that "A central goal” of restarting the season is providing a platform for social justice issues. Many believe this is in response to efforts from players like Kyrie Irving, who proposed players sit out in a stand for social justice, and Avery Bradley who has said Coalition wants NBA's plan for Black causes before restart. Chris Broussard tells Nick Wright and Kevin Wildes why he believes this is a step in the right direction, and why he believes those who were critical of Kyrie and Avery's actions may owe them an apology.

Kyrie said we should cancel the whole season to focus on these issue. His critics were saying they should use the NBA as a platform rather then cancel the whole season. Adam Silver now said they should use the NBA as a platform....So why should we apologize to Kyrie?

Sigh..
Divisiveness will not solve this.
If I’m CBA (china league), I’ll look at this as an opportunity.
P.S. Kyrie could be the next Marbury

Has Irving and the rest of this group reached out to actual leaders of the BLM movement to get their thoughts? I have a strong suspicion that everyday non-famous BLM activists around the country would love to have the kind of platform and exposure that NBA players do and are scratching their heads at why this group of players thinks giving it up somehow helps the cause.

Because Silver didn't take a stand previously.nikster wrote:Kyrie said we should cancel the whole season to focus on these issue. Re: Broussard: Those who criticized Kyrie Irving & Avery Bradley owe them apology
There are multiple ways to make a statement. Some players think it's best to make it through not playing. Some think it's best to do so while playing through that platform. Both groups seem to want to make a statement toward social reform.
Instead of yelling back and forth about one side being right or wrong or memeing Kyrie (which I admit is fun), maybe in this one it's not for sure and both sides have a point? I don't know what's best. I do respect that they wanted to make a statement and stood up for it.
Also a note, but this wasn't just Kyrie, plenty of players seemed to feel this way. He's the representative and was doing his job. But mostly I don't really think this is a "right vs wrong" issue, I think its two groups who both have the same goal thinking the way to get there is different and we don't know for sure which is best.

Hasnt Silver backed the players during every major issue in the past? From Sterling to China, I can't think of a time where Silver did anything to hold the players back.

When has the NBA ever discouraged players from speaking out on anything?

Broussard is on crack if he thinks that the NBA is only releasing these statements on fighting racism due to Kyrie and Bradley threatening to sit out.
Celebrities are being called out left and right for their silence and the NBA of all places was just going to keep quiet?
I don't buy that for a second.

I wish it was anyone but Irving. I just can't take a flat earthers ruminations seriously.

Props to Turbo_Zone for the sig.

Those who pay any attention to Chris Broussard owe the rest of us an apology.

Irving isnt even sitting out in that sense, he is injured and out for a year any way. I find it pretty interesting and suspect that the most vocal pro cancel season guy is the one who cant even play to begin with.

Its a basketball league. It's entertainment in its most vapid sense. The combination of all these factors could seriously seriously damage a league who's future looked inevitably bright just a few years ago. People will tune out. Its value is vapid escapist entertainment. The more it reminds people, rather than let's people escape from, all the chaos outside, the less value it has.

Re: Broussard: Those who criticized Kyrie Irving & Avery Bradley owe them apology
Nonsense!
What exactly is Kyrie and Bradley are asking for ?
They are just speaking great nice words aren’t they?
Give the list of what you want - stop talking like politicians who don’t do nothing. Why not start with that ?
Ask for something substantial- make a plan! Do you have a different plan Kyrie ?
Or are they just lazy to do that and wait for someone else to do that for them ?
This is joke because they don’t tell exactly what they want. All the talk is like - “we want justice” ... what’s that ?? Give the list !

Well not for nothing, China doesn’t seem like it’s too keen on basic human rights, either, so going there won’t be getting his message across
That being said I support Kyrie and anyone who wants to do something for change

Where did this false dichotomy come from that either we play basketball OR support social justice?

There is 2 ways to make a statement who can be equally effective:
a) Making home videos to support the cause.
b) By doing his work. Something he has been paid to do.
