Of the players that the NBA has reported as being infected, it seems that roughly 50% of them are foreign. Yet foreign players account for at best 20% of the player pool. Without much leverage over the foreign players, the NBA stands to experience the loss of foreign veteran players within the coming year. Some foreign players will be eager to leave the US as Nikola MIrotic did. To avoid blame for their mistreatment of foreign players during the pandemic, the NBA could preemptively blame foreign players for the spread of the virus by under-reporting the number of infected American players.
This doesn't apply to Enes Kanter, whom I consider a fine player, because he's codependent on the NBA and Trump for protection from the Turkish dictator. Kanter will sing the praises of the NBA and the NBA will gladly trumpet his pro-NBA opinions.
We're also seeing American NBA players skip the reboot for socially acceptable personal reasons that allow us to say "awe" instead of "damn".
