Wouldn't be into basketball the way I am now if it wasn't for Vince.
But this thread is about to turn unnecessarily ugly like every other vince thread so that's all I got to say

loved vince never hated on him like many others but now that he's retiring it's not a big deal for me, he's been gone for so long, we've had so many other stars and he didn't even stay with us that long.

Great talent, and would really thrive in today's game. Unfortunately, statistics and sports science wasn't anywhere near the leaps it has taken today. Poor shot selection, horrible coaching, and sub par medical staff, horrible GM, etc. He'd be a beast on today's Raptors.
2019 Eastern Conference All Stars
Derozan
Lowry
Ibaka
Valanciunas
Van Vleet
Delon Wright
Lebron
Embiid
There are only 2 teams in the league that rank in the top 6 in offensive and defensive efficiency: the Golden State Warriors and the Toronto Raptors.

Re: Vince Carter officially retires
Sad that he didn't get a full retirement tour, and that his career went out with a whimper because of COVID, but it is what it is. A lot of guys in the NBA would've given him a nice sending off, because many of them grew up idolizing him.
He had a good career, and brought the basketball hype to Toronto. He'll be in the HOF so he'll get his due then.
I just find it funny that so many fans here crap on VC because he quit on the team at some point. So did most of these fans here. Any members of Tank Nation want to raise their hands? You're all "quitters" too.

This is an excellent point. I guarantee everyone here has quit on this team at some point - how could you not? We have had some ugly days. The only exception might be the We The North era fans, and I would suspect that a lot of them are the VC haters today.

good point too- but saying you should lose games isnt the same as quitting- losing games helps a franchise in the long run in some cases in end of season stretches, especially where winning does nothing but screw up your ping pong chances.

Re: Vince Carter officially retires
There was nothing quite like those first four or so years... Just magic, especially those first two seasons from 98 till the Weis dunk. I'm so thankful we were witness to such historic greatness, he put us on the map in a lot of ways and I'll forever be thankful for that time.
Only sad that we didnt get that last run with the team, but it's not the end of the world. Vince had a fantastic career (Even considering the acrimony here) and can't wait till we retire that 15.
If you were too young to get the cultural impact of Vince, just watch this video.
Vince wasn't just a star, he was THE STAR. Highest vote-getter in the league, the heir apparent to MJ, arguably the most popular star in an era with many amazing players. I'll never forget it.

Vince "quit" on the team because management was completely and utterly incompetent.
I don't know, seems like an extremely valid reason to quit a company to me.

I saw a neat stat on Twitter. Vince played with or against 38% of all the players that have played in the NBA.

VC had a right to request a trade.
What made the fans hate VC was because of how unprofessionally he conducted himself at the beginning of the 2004 season.
He was openly sulking, would join opposing teams in their huddles, constantly joke around with opposing players during games, was evidently taking plays off and not putting in the effort, and would literally fall on the floor crying like a baby every single game when he got knocked down.
VC tanked his value and averaged career lows in almost every category before subsequently posting career highs in every category for the rest of the season and suddenly no longer had any injury issues.
Do I have any hate against VC for being upset with management and requesting a trade? No.
Do I have hate for the way VC conducted himself after requesting that trade? Absolutely.

Going to miss Vince, one of my favourite players ever, and definitely my favourite player as a kid (until he got traded).

That part is fair, but it's been damn near 20 years. The amount of people on here (not you specifically) who act like he pissed on their grandmother's grave, when the real vitriol should be reserved for Babcock floors me.

So why are you giving me excuses for hypotheticals that we don't know.
I never disputed that the front-office was pretty terrible at the time, but all we know are VC's words and actions.
VC acted unprofessionally and deliberately set the franchise back. When you are on a contract getting paid 96 million dollars and have 20,000 fans paying their hard-earned money for their seats and they are spending money to buy your merchandise, you don't deliberately not try.
I don't know anyone can excuse VC for his atrocious and childish behavior before the trade.

Vince is a main reason for basketball blowing up in this country.
You really want to go there when we have a yearly meme of people making threads titled "Bring Him Home"?
Theres only one camp that havent moved on.

Pretty obvious didn't even ask him. Even with added roster spots. That says everything to me about this organization and I respect them even more.

Fair enough. Vince will always be a polarizing figure but I'm sure every Raptors fan understand what the vinsanity era meant to the organization and basketball popularity growth in this town, without the yearly reminder of a contingent of the fanbase who cant help themselves by making threads speculating his return.
I for one am thankful this chapter of Raptors history has come to a close.

I doubt Vince lost some sleep about it. Especially since he would just ride the bench anyway...
Vince still had plethora of teams who could offer him more playing time.
