He's constantly mentioned in the worst All-Stars discussion.
Gordon Haywood, Dwayne Wade, JJ Reddick, Derek Rose, Derrick Fisher, Lenny Wilkins, Kirk Heinrich, Oscar Robinson, DeMar DeRozen, Andre Iguadola, Pascal Siakim, Malcolm Brogdan

I always thought he was a decent player and had some solid years. At the end of the day though the guy was a journeyman that played on 7 teams in 11 years.

Always reminded me of a Drew Gooden level of player. Solid but not great.
My eyes glaze over when reading alternative stat (not advanced stat) narratives that go many paragraphs long. If you can not make your point in 2 paragraphs it may not be a great point.

Re: How come no one ever mentions Chris Gatling?
Why would you expect a one time all-star who never played a meaningful game in his career and retired 20 years ago to ever be mentioned?
Considering this is his first post I legit think the OP is Chris Gatling

I liked Gatling the player quite a bit. He was very skilled offensively. I never really understood why he couldn't find a home since he was such a great sixth man. All that said, he's a pretty **** human being who committed fraud and swindled people out of money.

Re: How come no one ever mentions Chris Gatling?
Take everything in this thread regarding the shooting outside and protecting the rim and keep it, but replace the name Chris Gatling with Sam Perkins and you have a much more accurate thread.
Perkins was 6'10 and in 1994/5 made 136 3PT shots at near 40% while posting a neutral DBPM. That's pretty nuts for that era.
OT: When looking up his team that year, the 1994/5 Sonics, it really shows how underrated Detlef was. He was objectively better than Kemp by every advanced metric available. Shawn is one of the most overrated 'stars' of the 90's. Also, that same year Nate McMillian posted a 3.8 DBPM as a freaking guard, and the next best defender posted a 0.8. That shows it wasn't some anomaly as a good team system and that Nate was just an absolute freak defender who posted DBPM's that are generally only seen by big men. The next year he posted a 5.5 DBPM. That is absolutely INSANE. For comparison, the best Bruce Bowen posted was 2.2 and that's great for a guard/swing. The best Pippen posted was 3.2. There may be argument that McMillian is one of the best defensive guards in the history of the game, and terribly unheralded for how much a advanced metric anomaly he really is.

It has a steel plate in it
"Coach, why don't you just relax? We're not good enough to beat the Lakers. We've had a great year, why don't you just relax and cool down?"

Legitimately a really good scorer in there throughout the 90s. But what he was was scoring punch of the benc, and after playing for 8 teams in only 10 years, it should tell you that there may have been less there than the prolific scoring indicates.

Re: How come no one ever mentions Chris Gatling?
My friends and I held Warriors season tickets since back during Gatling's tenure here. We mostly bring him up in the context of his horrible, horrible pump fakes.
He was a decent enough player. He was NOT a rim protector. I'm not at all surprised that people don't discuss him here often; he just wasn't that interesting. If it makes you feel better, *I* brought him up in a thread recently, pointing out how stupid it was that when the Warriors decided to trade Tim Hardaway for Kevin Willis so BJ Armstrong could start at the point (bad idea), the salaries didn't work and we had to include Gatling in the deal to make it work, when Gatling was probably *also* better than Kevin Willis at that stage of their careers.

Yeah, he had a lot of promise to him... it really was a shame that he died so young in that Shawn Kemp accident.

I have seen his name pop up when people list the worst all star game selections of all time.

Re: How come no one ever mentions Chris Gatling?
Let's put it this way. I've been watching the NBA for over 30 years and forgot he made an all star team. I also didn't hear about what a scumbag he was when he was sentenced to prison a few years ago:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.azcentral.com/amp/944889001
The Arizona Attorney General's Office said a Scottsdale police investigation found Gatling owned and operated a telemarketing business that targeted vulnerable seniors and sold them fictitious websites with promises of making thousands of dollars.
Gatling collected over $155,000 from 12 people between October 2014 and February 2015, according to the Attorney General's Office.

he was a turnstyle defensively, it's the downside of these stats people looking 30 years back and not knowing context
