As long as the rookie scale contracts exist that grossly underpay stars, or the 4-7 year designated max that still underpays these guys exists, I feel guys like D-will are just getting back the money they should have gotten ten years ago.

More proof that waiving a player is the dumbest move a GM can make.

On that note, Bobby Bonilla day is tomorrow on July 1st.

He's collecting $1.19M from the Mets every July 1st, all the way until 2035!

Deron Williams! That's a name I haven't mentioned or thought of in quite some time. He had a run where he was arguably the best point guard in the game. I remember he really started making a name for himself in the league around 2007. It's crazy how fast time moves. I remember that draft night like it was yesterday. I remember being absolutely in awe at how beautiful his girlfriend was at the time on draft night. Of course....The words I used back then were a little less polite than the ones I used now. Either way, I was a big DWill fan up until he pulled his diva card out in Utah and forced a trade to Brooklyn. After that, I was done. I really wanted him to finish his career in Utah. He had something special brewing there and things went south for whatever reason.

Deron had an awesome prime.

I don't think he's a Hall-of-Famer, but I can see people someday asking why he isn't in the Hall-of-Fame (along alongside guys like Kevin Johnson, Mark Price, and Tim Hardaway who all had really good primes but not enough longevity).

you are burying the lede. 2 other NBA point guards were born literally the same day as Deron(crazily enough all 3 were teammates for a season) and only one still stands, the great JJ Barea.

I saw JJ Barea completely outplay Chris Paul at the Under 21 Tournament of the Americas, so pretty much case closed: JJ > CP3 > Deron. Anyone figuring out their all-time point guard ranking take note and remember to put the NBA champion above his lesser contemporaries.

He's being paid for all the work he put in to be one of the best basketball players in the world. He worked his ass off for that. It's not like he's a trust fund baby.

Injuries woes dude. Rose, Deron would have been all time greats and easily beaten washed up Paul.

A bit like Kawhi Leonard, who often just plays at 90% unless he's playing against top competition.

Texas Chuck wrote:Also, I didn't realize this was how the stretch provision worked. I thought that was just for cap purposes but the player got his money per the contract he signed. This actually sucked for Deron if the Nets got to profit off of holding his money.

It's been such a long time since D-Will left the Nets that I forgot how the stretch provision works for the player. I always preferred a buyout/waive of D-Will to get his money off the books asap.

The day Billy King stretched D-Will was seared into my memory as a horrible day because I knew the $5mil/year over 5 years of dead cap space could hamper our ability to execute trades and sign players.

Although the Nets lucked out a few times by not landing any of the restricted free agents they signed to offer sheets (who all ended up being overpaid), what Sean Marks has been able to do to turnaround the team (in spite of D-Will's not insignificant dead contract) on the books is nothing short of amazing.

Only partially, the last years of his contract got bought out so he did get paid for a few seasons he signed for but did not end up playing.
