UFC 251 Fight Island: Masvidal v. Usman

Post#1 » by Amare_1_Knicks » Tue Jun 9, 2020 4:40 pm

So far, I believe the card has 5 fights, 3 of which are titles:

Gilbert Burns vs Kamaru Usman
Petr Yan vs Jose Aldo
Max Holloway vs Alexander Volkanowski

And then there’s Jessica Andrade vs Namajunas and VanZant vs Ribas.

Personally, I’m disappointed that we’re not getting Masvidal vs Usman. That’s the one I was definitely looking forward to.

I think Burns beats Usman, but Burns loses to Masvidal. I also think Masvidal loses if he goes against Usman.

Good smart card. Some good fights but no names that would grab a casual audience. They're no doubt saving the big name guys that casual fans know till they can have fans again and collect on the gate. So ya no names on this card that brings in the masses, but a damn good card so far.

What a letdown...the whole appeal of "fight island" was it being some mystic remote tropical location that nobody's ever heard of...Yas Island is not even a "real" island, it is literally 150 metres away from land...

Card kind of sucks, too...

Not digging Max vs Volkanowski, that fight should not happen right away. Also Aldo getting a title shot? Would not be surprised to see him finish Yan, but what the hell?

To be fair to Dana, he has said multiple times to the public that people have been letting their imaginations run way too wild when it comes to fight island.

Also why shouldn't Max get the immediate rematch? Max defended the belt 3 times (4 times since he won the interim belt). Not too surprising to see a guy that dominated the division for 3 years get a rematch.

He also said they had all this infrastructure they had to build on the island. They only thing that have to do is bring an octagon.

Why shouldn’t Max get an immediate rematch? What more does someone have to do to warrant such a thing? He cleared out the division previously and was long overdue for a title shot for the longest time, he was beating contenders for no reason despite being undisputed number one contender. The division was just in a stalemate during the time so he decided to be active. Zabit and Zombie have never been the most active fighters either. Also two of the scores were 48-47, he was starting to find his spots as the fight went on. Immediate rematches must be a thing for guys like Max and the work they’ve put in as champions.

Korean Zombie needs to fight Ortega, he really needs another win. Zabit does too. Zabit has beaten Stephens and than Kattar as far as ranked opponents go, that isn’t enough for a title shot. Zombie has wins over Edgar and Moicano. Can also use another win. Not to mention Zombie lost to Yair who is just one rank below.

Also even if we weren’t in a pandemic this card is absolutely does not suck. It’s absolutely stacked.

You still have Rose/Andrade, the debut of Jiri Prochazka whose the best lhw on the market which is a huge get for ufc, Edgar/Munhoz is super interesting to see where Edgar stands, along with the biggest hype train in the heavy weight division with Cyril Gane who looks to be a future contender. And looks like Paige is on this card too which gives it even more name value just in case.

If you think this card sucks, it’s probably best you find another sport tbh.

Would have preferred Masvidal too but looking forward to the two main fights. Aldo getting a title fight is silly.

252 looking good so far too. Stipe vs DC and Till vs Whittaker will be good.

I think Max has been exposed as someone who can only fight on the front foot but he certainly deserves the re-match.

I'm unclear who Gilbert Burns is. Colby deserves the re-match, that last fight was awesome and his run was awesome.
Hi love, bye love, I will miss my love.

Perhaps worth noting that Nate was only making 20k/20k before he fought Conor.

Nate is an idiot. I do think he has a somewhat salient point though about the title shots not going to the next guy in line (or hell, not even the NEXT guy in line) because those guys want to get paid for the fight...so the shot just goes to the guy willing to take less.

I think Masvidal will step in but we’ll see.

Pretty tough fight to step into on a Weeks notice. Probably not doing himself any favours taking it.

Not even sure how you could be allowed to step in on a weeks notice, as Covid has a two week incubation period.
You could potentially contaminate the entire facility.
