All numbers from before his body broke down.

Hes been hurt for two years now— he tore his rotator cuff half way thru 18 and broke his foot in 19.Also, schematics matter. Hes about to have the best o line hes ever had and he wont take the same shots with a quick release system

I see youre talking about before that now— to me, football analytics are real tough. Systems and personnel are so important and PFF isnt always aware of the reads designed by the play. Im less concerned with Newton not performing in a downfield risk taking system than I would be him in the short-mid distance system he played in 2018.

One thing that made a difference in 2018 was the incorporation of Christian McCaffrey into more of the system. Newton became willing to take the dumpoffs and outlets to McCaffrey instead of trying to force things downfield that weren't there. I think White and Burkhead will be used a lot the same way. Same with Dalton Keene who I think will play a role in the screen game also. McDaniels I think is smart enough to tailor the offense to Newton's skills to mix up some quick read options, along with some naked bootleg play action stuff to give him time to make reads. Plus use formations to disguise run and pass to keep blitzers honest. He'll still run at times but I think he'll protect himself when he needs to.

First time the Pats have an athletic QB in 20 years. Tommy's the GOAT, but this could be fun if Newton is healthy.
Good assessment:

Franchise tag with Cam Newton

Prior to the 2011 CBA, non-exclusive franchise tags had been an average of the five largest salaries in the prior year at a player’s position or 120 percent of the prior year’s salary of the player, whichever was greater. [...]

The 120 percent and five largest salaries provisions remain intact, but the formula component is now calculated over a five year period that’s tied to a percentage of the overall salary cap. More specifically, the number for each position is determined by taking the sum of the non-exclusive franchise tags as determined by the original methodology for the previous five seasons and dividing by the sum of the actual NFL salary cap amount for the previous five seasons. The resulting percentage, which is known as the Cap Percentage Average in the CBA, is then multiplied by the actual salary cap for the upcoming league year.

Spoiler:
Long story short, if the salary cap decreases in 2021 compared to this year’s $198.2 million — something that could happen due to the league’s projected revenue loss in light of the Coronavirus pandemic — the same could happen to the franchise tag numbers for quarterbacks. The tags are all calculated as a percentage of the cap, after all. This year’s tag of $26.8 million, for example, was set at roughly 13.5 percent of the salary cap number that was announced to the NFL’s 32 franchises in March.

While it remains to be seen how the league’s salary cap projections develop and what this means for the franchise tag both in terms of total value and percentage of the cap, the Patriots and Newton agreeing to exclude a stipulation from the deal barring them from applying the tag is interesting. At the very least, this could give the organization an option to go year-to-year with the quarterback based on how the marriage works out over the next few weeks and months.

Newton, meanwhile, did give up some freedom as part of a team-friendly deal that could get the former league MVP back on the map after two injury-riddled campaigns. A lot can change between now and next March, but for the time being it seems as if both parties are using 2020 as an evaluation period and the possible foundation for a longer-term cooperation.

Cam Newton will make the team. You are talking about a future hall of famer. If he has healthy, he should beat out Jarrett and will. Jarrett Stidam is so overrated. He hasn’t proven anything yet. Remember Ryan Mallet. Exactly. I rather the patriots go with Cam Newton both on short and long term.

Cam Newton just needs to improve his passing accuracy, read defenses quicker which he is capable of doing especially with better coaching in New England. Work with him in making him a better passer, including his throwing mechanics.

His issues were physical related to injuries that can get better. Did they? No idea but much less talented guys have comeback from the washed up label when it was related to injury.

To have not signed Newton to this deal and let him go be a super back up for another contender would have been malpractice. I think what the Pats showed in the draft is how they feel about Stidham or the QBs available. The team has been pretty up front about their concerns with getting Stidham ready with lack of OTA's and other activities.

If nothing else I think Newton gives the team a sacrificial lamb for the first few weeks of the season. The Pats have a tendency to start slow anyhow. Newton spits the bit then change horses and let the Stidham era start. If Stidham craps all over himself in the first few weeks you may never get that back.

Let’s see the Chiefs build a deep team now that their QB isn’t on a rookie deal.

There is also $25 million in incentives tied to winning the MVP and reaching the Super Bowl starting in the 2022 season. The contract leaves the Chiefs with a lot of short-term flexibility as nearly the whole deal is conditionally guaranteed, Pelissero said. Per Rapoport, by March (2021), $106 million will be fully guaranteed and there is a no-trade clause in the deal.

$140 million injury guarantee.

Cam just seems like the kind of player with these videos that will be cut by the regular season.

He hasn't gotten there yet, but he's already at the TO doing situps after no one wanted him stage.

As long as he stays away from walking too far down the Antonio Brown path he can have a career still. But yikes, walking on thin ice man.

Yeah, this reads like personal bias. You can try if you want to but Newton's talent is undeniable. He's a tremendous leader who teammates gravitate to. All you SHOULD be seeing in that video is a man who just bet on himself and is eager to prove haters wrong. This is nothing that Brady hasn't been doing for years now. And to say that nobody wanted him ignores significant factors at play. The only way he doesn't win the job is because the foot isn't healed. Though, due to the lateness in the year this signing comes, it's possible he may not have completely mastered the playbook by the time camp hits.

Brady has been posted videos of himself doing situps and saying he's a dragon or some dumb ****?

Or sucking for the past few years before doing this?

Pretty sure the personal bias is on your side, if he was a Jet doing it we'd be laughing our asses off at him.

Actually lion, not dragon is what he meant and the fact that you view what he said as "dumb ****" reveals your bias. Brady in workout videos has absolutely talked himself up, has trolled media and fans. And pumps himself up in his own unique way before games and in workouts. Edelman does it too. Gronk as well. And some would argue that Brady has not been that impressive at QB the last couple of years and has rode a defense that has significantly improved over that time. People have a hard time with who Cam is, and ALL of the ways that he is different from Brady potentially being the new face of the Patriots.

Great you made that comparison.

I made the comparison of players that have sucked that have done the exact same thing while struggling to find a roster spot.

Maybe Cam sticks around, maybe not. Let's see how far it goes.

I think you're really grasping at straws trying to say Cam is in the same position as Brady or Edleman or Gronk have been over the past few years.

You're misquoting. Not same position, same attitude. But also same performance that has come under scrutiny over the last 2 years. I mean, all you had to turn was turn on a TV or radio the last two years and you would hear questions about how productive Brady and Gronk really were. Hell Belichick wanted to get rid of both of them like 3 years ago. There is a remarkable amount of similarity between Cam and Brady in a number of ways. And Cam didn't suck before he got injured in 2018. One could argue that he was on his way to a stellar campaign after the first 8 games. But let's be clear here. You didn't make it about his performance at first. You made it about the personality he displayed in those videos being the reason he wouldn't stick here because the videos personally rubbed you the wrong way. When those same kinds of personality displays have been revered and defended here for years. It wasn't about his talent or production in your first post. That's all I'm trying to point out.

Disagree— look at his first 8 games in 18 before he tore his rotator cuff: 1900 yards, 67% completion, 15-4 TD-Int ratio.

Also, after the failure to plan for life after Scar in 2014, I’m confident we’ll be better off this time.

Yeah, but also look at the other 3.5 seasons since his Super Bowl year. Odds he lasts the season producing as he did in those first 8 games of 2018 are minimal IMO, especially after logging multiple significant injuries since then. FWIW, schedule was pretty weak for those 8 games. Considering that they got Baltimore just before they switched to Lamar, the best team they played was probably the Cowboys in Week 1?

IMO, if he stays healthy, Cam is probably the 25-30th best QB at best. I think Stidham can do that too, without eating into next year's cap. And he has higher upside for the future.

Can I take my victory lap yet, or do you need to see more?
