Re: What is Jayson Tatum's ceiling?
If the question is "What is the absolute best he could be?" Then there is no real limit. Am I saying he is going to turn into the best player to ever play? No. But is there any real limitation to his game? I don't see it. Hard work and some luck right?
I do think he could become a bit more aggressive. The best player on a team should be taking games over, but its a really fine line. With IT and Kyrie out we have a real get everyone involved sum is bigger than the parts thing going.
I will say I see some similarity to Tatum and Pierce in their mannerisms and personality, but Tatum seems more mature. PP had a lot of wasted years and a bad mentor in Walker tbo.

I think the "taking games over" thing is partly just a function of his skill as a playmaker.
Earlier in his career, he wasn't a good initiator. So you needed someone else to find him. And in a big moment, if they chose not to (i.e. Rozier/Morris/Smart/Brown shooting us out of game 7)... Tatum didn't really have the tools to force the issue.
Now, between becoming a good P&R scorer (off the deep 3), increasing his drives, and marginally improving at passing out of double teams, you can run the offense through him, rather than run the offense to get the ball to him.

Going off Snapchat photos I think it’s an off white. Could be wrong though.

Excellent piece by Jared Weiss.
Excellent piece by Jared Weiss.
It all represented a surprisingly candid and thorough stream of consciousness from the typically reticent 22-year-old. Tatum comes across as somewhat shy with microphones in his face, though he is known to come out of his shell when around friends and family. Though his personality has started to shine through this year, particularly with his ascension to stardom, the Tatum that took the podium Tuesday was revelatory.
He spoke with a conviction and fluidity he has never quite shown before in a press conference setting. Tatum sounded more like the comfortable leader he is often made out to be by his peers than the somewhat robotic young man whose public appearances have generally served to show how well he was paying attention at his rookie orientation media training. It’s hardly a surprise that the great Tatum evolution of 2020 did not stop when the ball ceased bouncing in March.

I think Paul is just saying that. Pierce at 24 was better than Tatum ever was.FlatearthZorro wrote:Tatum is legit special and so is Brown, imo. Pierce said he was better than him when he was 19/20 years old than Paul at 23-24 and I don't think Paul was just saying cause he's a Celtic. I think Tatum could be a taller, better on defense Pierce. And to me the first season when I watched Paul(the C's were trash outside of him), Paul could've easily been a top 30 player if the C's gave him better teammates when he was between 26-28. The stats he was averaging were elite, even in today's game with a **** supporting cast. So if Jayson can be that, he'd be a top 5 player for a long period of time.

Pierce is my favorite player, ever, without a shadow of a doubt. But Tatum has more potential. If he can be consistent.
Good assessment:
PLO wrote:Tatum played OK - took advantage of a few mismatches - decent on the defensive end. He is what we thought he was going into the season - a technically very proficient player operating close to his career ceiling as a rookie.

Re: What is Jayson Tatum's ceiling?
So far in the bubble Tatum is averaging 20/5.4/3.6 with 2 steals and a block in 30 mpg. TS of 57%, even with the Bucks disaster, without that game his TS has been 70% lol. The playmaking has been really improved, he usually has a plan before he gets trapped, and it’s opened up the offense a good amount. Outside of that Bucks game, he hasn’t really forced anything, and has been deferring a decent amount. I’m guessing he will turn the aggression up in the playoffs.
For the season as a whole, he is 11th in PIPM, 7th in RAPM, 10th in RAPTOR, 13th in RPM, 17th in BPM, and 12th in VORP.

This play is a testament to the respect or fear Tatum inspires in opponents.
1. After getting a screen, Tatum is double-teamed way behind the 3-point line.
2. He dribbles around the double-team. One defender is left way out of the play, but the other is giving chase.
3. A third defender comes over to challenge Tatum's potential drive.
4. That quasi-tripleteam leaves Smart open for the alley-oop.
And by the way, Time Lord screened two different guys on that possession.

Tatum will finish top 15 in in RPM, BPM, PIPM, and RAPTOR.
He is the only player under 25 yrs old to do so. Not even Luka did that this year (19th in RPM). I think Luka and JT are the two best young players in the league.

I’ll say it and if I’m wrong, y’all are free to remind me.
Tatum will be a borderline top 5 player within two years, and consistently in the MVP discussions from that point on. Hell, next year I think he averages 26/8/4.5 on a 60% TS. Will finish this season 8th in PIPM, 7th in RAPM, 12th in RPM, 10th in RAPTOR, 15th in BPM, and 11th in VORP. We are entering pretty rare territory with how good he is at his age.

Not his ceiling but does his game remind anyone else of Mashburn? The smooth pull-up off the dribble at that size - I don’t remember a lot of other dudes like that.
