The Palace was imploded today

Kind of a sickening feeling. One of the nicest arenas in the country. And that was even before $40 mil was poured into it from 2012-2015. I did like the idea of playing downtown, but what a waste.

I always liked the arena but not the location. It sat out in the middle of nowhere, relatively speaking. I know it was a desirable location for anyone coming from anywhere north on I-75 and who had no desire to do anything but just go to the game and go home, but for those of us who’d rather make a day or an evening of it and do stuff outside of just going to the game, the Palace location offered next to nothing.

Ya this made me sad inside too. Sooooooo many memories from the Bad Boys days and Goin to Work times. Buttttt....cheers to new memories boys! Little Caesars arena hopefully brings that to us!

What surprised me is that nothing good ever built around the Palace. It was inaugurated properly -- winning basketball, good concerts, pretty much an "if you build it, they will come" scenario. No one really built upon that, though. Auburn Hills can do many things, but "be a cool place to hang" doesn't seem to be one of them.

The hard part is that there are two big land fills and a GM manufacturing plant in eyes shot of the the Palace. It was very hard for Auburn Hills to make the Palace a central hub of a thriving area.

wish i could have gone to one more concert or event there pisses me off that it had to go the way it did no one wants to drive to Detroit and deal with parking and other bs

I've been to MANY events at the Palace over the years since it opened and have now been to LCA 12-15 times as well as MANY Lions and Tigers games, concerts at the Fox and Fillmore, the casinos, etc. over the past 30 years. I can personally attest that parking and getting out of the city after an event is FAR easier downtown than at the Palace. This is due to the parking being in numerous smaller lots around the arenas, all which generally have 2-4 exit points in an area where you can go literally any direction on any street and be on the highway in 5-10 minutes. As far as the "other bs" you're referring to, I have no clue what that means. Crime? Not even close. If you've been downtown in the last 15 years you'll have seen that the police presence on event nights is HUGE. Anyone who claims they feel unsafe going to an event in downtown Detroit simply hasn't been there anytime recently. As far as who wants to go to? Me, and whole lot of other people like me. Again, if you think people in general would rather avoid downtown Detroit as an entertainment venue you clearly haven't been there recently.

It's not a secret why in every other city with all four major sports, all the teams were located within the city limits. Until the Pistons moved to LCA, Detroit was the only city that had a team outside the city. People from the 'burbs generally like going into the city from time to time. When I was single and living in Flint I'd drive down to Detroit for a night out pretty much every other weekend. After I got married and moved to the NW Detroit 'burbs I started going into the city all the time.

Having had my car (and at least 20 others in the area) smash-and-grabbed 3 years ago, 3 blocks away from LCA in the glow of a bright street light and a paid parking lot, I'm the wrong person to comment on crime. Driving through downtown Detroit late at night with a smashed window trying to find an open precinct because cops don't seem to be showing up to take a police report... fun. It's not as safe as the Palace, and it isn't gonna be, short of martial law or a pandemic which would render parking moot.

As for parking, I agree with Manocad. The only fond memories of parking at the Palace involve parking across the street and taking the shuttle over. Or, maybe when the Pistons were so bad that half the undercrowded arena? LCA was a mess at the beginning, but that had more to do with road construction than LCA. 3 blocks from LCA is $10 parking, and the Palace was at $15 when it closed. The DSO parking structure is $10 and half a mile away along Woodward, if you're looking for a cheap structure versus an exposed lot.

Chicago, Denver and Philly are the other three. Although Detroit is now among only three cities where the teams all bear the city name and play in the city limits. Denver has the Colorado Rockies.

Note: For the record, there are 13 US "cities" (read: metro areas) that have all four major sports either named after the city and/or playing in the city limits or metropolitan area. Like LA (Mighty Ducks of Anaheim), New York (Jets/Giants play in New Jersey), and the aforementioned MLB team in Denver, the Colorado Rockies.

The pandemic has made getting away from owning arena a desirable thing. Gores may have lucked out on this move.
