meanwhile, nationwide hospitalizations nearing record highs of months ago, but while deaths are up-ticking they are still relatively low

In the Bay Area, while all of the indicators are still going up, they are going up at a slower rate than they were two weeks ago, or one week ago. So it's slowing down. For now. I think this is the case in many of the areas that exploded a few weeks ago- so hopefully people are paying attention again to being careful, and this can be contained more quickly and with many fewer deaths than in March/April.

I would trust the average American's opinion about what's happening with the American govt. if they are reliably reading newspapers and paying attention, more so I would someone from another country, unless they are some sort of specialist focusing on American affairs. If you spend time in a place, and talk to locals, you get a good sense of what the general sentiment is.

of course. but trump and dutarte's relationship is not a matter of public sentiment

and most people do not reliably pay attention to what's going on in their government. as player up even noted, most filipinos are mostly concerned with putting food on the table

latest top 10 in per capita new daily cases:

1 oman
2 bahrain
3 panama
4 s africa
5 USA
6 israel
7 brazil
8 colombia
9 bolivia
10 kuwait

FL, LA, MS, NV, AZ, AL, SC, TX, ID an TN all at higher per capita rates than any nation

meanwhile, FEMA is still shipping defective medical gear to nonprofit nursing homes, including trash bag gowns, expired masks and masks made from underwear fabric. some facilities in arizona are being sent gloves that are all extra small. the average nursing home has seen 23 infections since the pandemic started. the trump administration decision to largely stay out of the PPE procurement business has caused prices to skyrocket as states, cities and hospitals have to compete for equipment, leaving nursing homes at a disadvantage. the vast majority of nursing homes are not even able to regularly test employees and residents. we're five months in, folks

Are you sure about that last sentence- that "the vast majority of nursing homes aren't testing"? that sounds incredible. If any place should testing, it's nursing homes. I don't know the latest %'s, but early on about 1/4 to 1/2 of all deaths were at nursing homes.

This Marlins outbreak has the potential to have a significant ripple effect in both sports and general society.

I guess I'm biased being a big baseball fan, but I thought this would be major news outside the sports world; CNN has it as a basic article down in their Sports feed. Though it sounds like MLB's position is "Hey that sucked! Cross your fingers it doesnt happen again, everyone!" Seems like everyone involved wants to underplay it - except the Philly players anyways - while every fan is saying "This was bound to happen, we all knew it."

If the Phillies test completely negative, it'll be great news - perhaps the Marlins are punished for slacking in their safety requirements and we all move on. If a couple of them show up positive, likely due to their interaction with the Marlins, there might be more outcry for rethinking the safety restrictions the league is using.

Apparently Phillies manager, Joe Girardi knew enough about the Marlins situation prior to yesterday's game to recommend that his players wear masks on the bases. Apparently, only Bryce Harper took his advice.

While MLB has decent protocols in place, in practice, players are often ignoring them (eyeballing it, a minority of players wear masks in the dugout, spitting and high-5s are commonplace with some hugs thrown from time to time). It's kind of a microcosm of the country, I guess. Let's hope that the Marlin's situation is a wake up call.
Until the actual truth is more important to you than what you believe, you will never recognize the truth.

frankly, i think we'd have to see the baseball or basketball seasons completely cancelled in order to produce a societal impact. and maybe not even that would move the needle. maybe we'd have to lose the football season. hell, we'd deserve it

stella immanuel is a pediatrician. so even if she actually has had 250 kids who have tested positive, it's not some miracle outcome that none of them have died regardless of how poorly she "treated" them. in fact, in most of the world only 1 out of every several thousand infected children has died from COVID-19

2 countries that are doing very poorly w/ COVID-19: USA and brazil. both of their presidents have touted hydroxychloroquine and one of them CONTRACTED THE VIRUS! meanwhile, nations that are doing well have leaders that are following the science, which suggests that any mild benefits that the drug has for some people is not worth the potential side effects. do the math

and a simple google search on dr. immanuel reveals quite a bit of quackery

The NBA initially postponing the season ended up being a linchpin for how the rest of society reacted towards the pandemic. I know tons of people who thought this was going to blow over until the NBA canceled their games. By now, everyone should know how serious it is, so I'm not sure if canceling more sports games will do anything. At this point, if you don't believe how serious and dangerous Covid-19 is the only thing that will change your mind is if you or people close to you start to become seriously ill from it.

Trump today at his daily briefing, complaining that Fauci's approval rating is so much higher than his:

Nobody likes me,” the president said in a rare moment of self-reflection. “It can only be my personality, that’s all.” His lament came on the same day that the nation surpassed the grim benchmark of 150,000 deaths as a result of the pandemic.

“Remember, he’s working for this administration,” Trump said of Fauci, who is not a political appointee. “He’s working with us. We could’ve gotten other people. We could’ve gotten somebody else. It didn’t have to be Dr. Fauci.”“He's got this high approval rating,” Trump said of Fauci on Tuesday. “So why don’t I have a high approval rating and the administration with respect to the virus?”
