Building a team with cap space really only works if you've got a couple guys already in-house on bargain contracts. Otherwise you're working from a significant handicap as other teams can spend more - up to the luxury tax line easily and even past it for a big market contender.

The Lakers operating on the cheap cap space plan doesn't really make sense. I'd expect them to be spending more to try and win because they easily can.
