Half the bloody Marlins team tests positive, games cancelled

Post#1 » by Schad » Mon Jul 27, 2020 9:21 pm

I realize that this is being discussed in other threads, but I feel like we're going to need a thread specifically for team outbreaks. Just a hunch.

Anyway, this is Bad.

Wonder if the league reaction would be different if it were the Yankees instead of the Marlins. Right now, there doesn't seem to be any reaction at all despite half a team not being able to play..

What boggles my mind is that the players knew they had positive player(s) on the roster yet they STILL played! Like how incompetent is that.

I wonder if this opens them to be some kind of liability if other teams players that came in contact with the Marlin players/staff also start testing positive and their games start getting cancelled as well. Also, what if a good playoff-calibre team gets infected due to the negligence of another team and has to resort to minor league players to fill the roster only for them to miss out on the playoffs.

This will not end well. The system will only work if all teams observe the same kind of due diligence. If one slips and does what the Marlins did, it jeopardizes the entire league's ability to finish the season.

The Marlins are situated rught in THE Covid hotbed and this comes as little to no surprise. It would be a bigger story in New York because they've done a decent job of curtailing the virus in New York, compared to most of the rest of the US

The fact that they knew that the had positive tests and played the game still is borderline criminal. If a player on the opposing team caught the virus and transmitted it to someone in their family, what would Major League Baseball do?

and yet people claim:

1. COVID-19 is a hoax
2. masks don't matter
3. there must be a lot of 5G towers wherever they got the COVID-19

Welp.

So...how do we go about setting up 6 bubble locations? Maybe then the dome would be back in play.

I really don't know how this is going to work this year, guys.

They should've gone little league ws style for 3 months and had fun with it.

On the plus side they will likely be immune for the foreseeable future making the likelihood of future outbreaks much less likely

As I noted yesterday, if they're going to cancel games every time a player or two gets it, the season will never be finished. They shouldn't have bothered even starting it if this was going to be their approach. It seems the Marlins situation put a scare into them (and probably rightfully so).

It's only going to get dumber from here, unfortunately. It's a virtual certainty that there will be an outbreak during the playoffs...how is baseball going to handle that? What are the odds that players are going to self-report contact if it means that they have to miss games?

They should've tried hub cities. There are 7 stadiums they could've used in the northeast. Add in DET and that's 8. I'd probably avoid OH and IL, essentially any state doing 1000+ cases a day. Seems like the first batch got infected in ATL (hotspot) and now Cards in MO (rising state) or MIN. Just stay out of states where caseload is high. Don't know how viable this is but with all the crap they've made up along the way this month I don't see why not.

Agreed. The whole point of the taxi squad in theory was to replace any positive testing player without having to stop play. If games are being cancelled not only when a player or two gets it, but when a coach or staff get it, then just end the season this weekend and hope there's a vaccine by March of next year.

The Marlins situation likely did change their approach, but if Manfred thought he would be able to implement a season with normal regional travel while allowing players to do whatever they wanted without fear of repercussions, then this plan was designed to fail. Players needed to take this seriously, and there had to be rules in place to dissuade them for running around.

Very disappointed in MLB and the MLBPA.

It's an admission that they basically have no protocols in place to prevent a couple cases from turning into a full-blown outbreak, certainly. And it shouldn't be a shock; MLB's focus was on wringing as much money out of this as was possible for the owners, and just hoped that the rest would work out.

They might well complete the season in some way or form, but it's unlikely to be remembered with any fondness, nor viewed as a particularly accurate reflection of the quality of the teams involved.

Players getting coronavirus isn't necessarily the disaster that people are making it out to be. The players are just "testing positive" - as far as I can see, none of the players are actually getting sick at all, and they will all likely be immune for the foreseeable future.

A couple of weeks on the bench and they will be back out on the field. This doesn't have to be the end of the season.
