How? Dont get me wrong, I think the Pels have coddled him, but ultimately it all falls on Zion. Its up to him to get and stay in shape, just like how that is up to every other professional athlete. Jahlil Okafor used to be overweight, but he is now shredded since going to the Pels.

Holding him out, they need to have a reason. It's not helping, clearly.

You'd be singing a different tune if he played too much and an injury resulted because of the shape he's in.

I would argue holding his minutes down is doing that now...and adding the lbs. He needs to be running if healthy.

His body's too good at converting energy, he can't be sitting like this for no reason.

There are smarter ways to get in shape than throwing yourself helter skelter into a full bore NBA contest. Playing 35 minutes in an NBA contest isn't what's ultimately going to get him in shape. I don't know why I need to state that.

The fact that he is overweight and clearly gets gassed is why they are holding him out. I think its pretty obvious that the Pels would play Zion as much as they could if he was in shape. It was Zion who came out of shape and with horrible condition which has forced the Pels to bring him back slowly.

He's a freak, he's got to burn that energy some how. It's either going to be muscle, fat or energy. He can't add more weight.

He really doesn't have many options. Start running and hope you have Lebron's kind of luck.

Sitting him will just add weight and make it worse :(

Coach K had it figured out. It's the need to re-invent a working model that the Pelicans are adding.

If the Pelicans fail to make the playoffs, it's going to be quite a long stretch of not playing basketball for Zion.

Ok, well, believe it or not, these guys are capable of exercising off court under controlled conditions.......... In fact, they ALL do that! Ramping up activity level to a stage thats too intense too quickly leaves your body susceptible to injury, something they're VERY aware they have to monitor with Zion.

What you're saying they should do spits in the face of science.

He’s held out because he’s a big fat liability, both defensively, and in terms of an asset if he doesn’t take some strain off those joints.

Zion should be a big boy and take some responsibility for his own fitness levels. Maybe he should swimming or jogging, there’s plenty of spare time in the bubble...

Zion came into Duke in much better shape than he did entering the NBA. Also Zion was in a completely controlled environment at Duke. Duke provides every player with a personalized meal plan. Theyre told what to eat and when to eat it and their meals are prepared for them.

So it is much easier for K to and the coaching staff to keep Zion's weight under control. Its not the same situation for the Pels, Zion no longer lives in such a controlled environment. It is now up to Zion to hire his own personal nutritionist so he can get back on a personalized meal plan, assuming he doesn't already have one. If he does, then I think its time for him to fire that person and find someone new.

It’s weird how it’s not being talked about in broadcasts. Marc Jones even tried to claim that Zion was in great shape due to all the extra time he put in during the break. No one is calling it out in half time shows. It’s like it’s this dirty little secret and no one’s supposed to say anything.

I'm sure he is still working out. That's the thing, it's not enough.

He's the kind of guy that hits the weight room before and after the game. You can't keep him out of there.

It could also be something un-disclosed, something they missed pre draft.

I hope it's not the case, but it would explain some of steps they have taken.

Hes a rookie, hes just getting his feet wet into NBA life and conditioning. I wouldn't worry right now, especially given how mediocre/non title competitive the Pelicans are.

Next year should tell alot in his habits however. He will have full use of all the facilities.

I'm fairly certain the Pels have surrounded him with a nutritionist and all the bells and whistles normal #1 picks get.

My enduring hope is that the second the Pels are eliminated he picks up his phone and calls his colleague Draymond Green to find out how he fixed his diet. This isn’t about the Pels nutrition folks. I’m sure they’re fine. This has to be about personal accountability. He looked ridiculous tonight just standing next to JJJ.

Is it a disease or is he just plain stupid? When you are a pro athlete you just don’t get that fat.
