I still remember the dolts on ESPN or whatever putting him at #7 on their board on draft night, knowing full well he was the real deal. I was on him a year before that, and Spender spent the whole year posting scouting vids on him saying the same. I trust Spencer’s judgement, and was consulting him leading up to that draft.

My jaw dropped when you were able to make that trade to #3 and then fell through the floor when you weren't made to pony up more to move up for him.

who would you have taken at #3 if Luka was off the board. I had a pending trade to move up right before the draft. Didn't pull the trigger (should have obviously)

i kick myself to this day just wouldn't pull the trigger on the 3rd 1st rounder. I had two lottery picks that year and was asked to throw in a 3rd 1st rounder. I had Luka ranked #1 I just thought 3 potential lottery picks (seeing how we didn't know how good luka would be right away) might be too much to give up.

Now that I think about it

the core would have been Luka/AD/Jaylen Brown.

Melo and Illmatic both had Ayton and Bagley 1/2 but neither knew if the other was bluffing. Ill wanted Bagley and Meli wanted ayton. I told Illmatic that if he held KOC over the barrel he would still get his guy (I was in some sort of related negotiation that never panned). He wanted to be 100% sure of getting his guy which I respect but... damn.

ill countered with #7, #12, and additoinal very likely lotto pick. I turned him down.

3 lotto picks seems like a lot to give you for another lotto pick. But if that guy is a stud you might regret not giving up those assets which I clearly did. Now I got MPjr out of that mix but I would be a championship contender right now.
