KJ HAMLER
WR, DENVER BRONCOS

Broncos signed second-round WR KJ Hamler to a four-year contract.

Hamler (5’9/178) is an unpolished and undersized playmaker with the potential to be a downfield mismatch as a young (21) rookie. He compiled a 56-904-8 receiving line during his age-20 campaign last season while operating as Penn State’s big-play weapon. A hamstring injury prevented him from competing at the NFL Combine, where he undoubtedly would have timed in the 4.3s. On tape, Hamler won from the slot and out wide as a lid lifter and manufactured-touch weapon similar to Curtis Samuel or Ted Ginn. Hamler's size limits him in traffic, but his biggest college issue was his hands. He tied for the most drops (12) in the Power 5 per PFF. Hamler should still immediately slot into three-receiver sets for a Broncos offense hunting for more big plays.

ISAIAH WILSON
T, TENNESSEE TITANS

Titans placed OT Isaiah Wilson on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

The No. 29 overall pick, Wilson has been slated to slide in as a 1-for-1 replacement for RT Jack Conklin, who departed for the Browns in free agency. He will now be even further behind, however, after an offseason program that featured zero live reps. It is definitely a situation to monitor in Nashville.

JUSTIN HERBERT
QB, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Chargers signed first-round QB Justin Herbert to a four-year, $26.6 million contract.

As with all first-round picks, the contract includes a fifth-year team option. Herbert (6’6/236) was the third signal caller off the board in the first six picks, and will be the Chargers' first new starter at quarterback since 2006. Herbert opted to stay at Oregon for all four seasons despite receiving top-five buzz ahead of the 2019 NFL Draft. He ended his collegiate career with a lopsided 95 touchdowns to 23 picks (and 8.2 YPA) largely because of his elite arm strength. Arguably too reserved in college, Herbert’s traits are best-suited for a vertical or play-action offense. His overall accuracy (64% career completion rate) and stone hands (26 fumbles in 43 starts) are genuine concerns. A gifted athlete with 4.68 speed, Herbert has the ability to scramble for first downs when the pocket collapses and can handle designed runs, which increases his odds of panning out as a rookie starter and franchise cornerstone. While his size, arm talent, and mobility are prototypical of what NFL front offices covet, he needs to improve upon his in-pocket awareness and decision-making to unlock the upside of those gifted tools. Easing the transition will be a strong Chargers skill corps led by Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler and Hunter Henry. Herbert still seems like a prime candidate for severe rookie growing pains.

LYNN BOWDEN
RB, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

Raiders OC Greg Olson said the team is planning for third-round rookie Lynn Bowden to take snaps at quarterback.

"We believe that he can transition and be a running back, as well as do some of those plays at the quarterback position that he did in college," was Olson's exact quote. "You see the game changing from year to year, the use of the RPOs and the use of the Taysom Hills, those type of players that played the RPO-style offense in college, they become valuable." First and foremost, Bowden is going to be a running back, but he has the skill-set to be an elevated Wildcat back. There won't be enough touches to go around for 2020 re-draft value, but Bowden is an intriguing Dynasty league stash.

BRYAN EDWARDS
WR, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

USA Today’s Marcus Mosher reports rookie Bryan Edwards could start at X receiver.

Edwards is full-go at training camp after missing the pre-draft process. Raiders OC Greg Olson suggested he’s already passed Hunter Renfrow for a top-three role, and playing the X spot could put him ahead of Henry Ruggs or Tyrell Williams in two wide sets. The Raiders have made it clear they have plans for Edwards now that he’s healthy. The SEC all-timer is looking like a good bet to start Week 1.

DAMON ARNETTE
DB, LAS VEGAS RAIDERS

Raiders coach Jon Gruden said first round CB Damon Arnette “could start” Week 1.

This doesn’t come as a surprise given Gruden’s willingness to play rookies. 2019 second-rounder Trayvon Mullen made 10 starts last year but had mixed results. The Raiders also have Prince Amukamara on a veteran minimum deal. Even with a limited training camp, Arnette should open the year in one of the starting spots.

ROBERT HUNT
T, MIAMI DOLPHINS

Miami second-round rookie Robert Hunt is competing for the starting RT job.

His main competition is Jesse Davis, who played 975 snaps last season at a below-average level. Hunt lined up at right tackle at Louisiana-Lafayette, yet numerous evaluators projected a shift inside to guard at the professional level. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald listed Davis and Hunt at both right tackle and right guard, so the team could be set on finding Hunt a starting job early in his first season.

ANTONIO GIBSON
WR, WASHINGTON FOOTBALL TEAM

Washington RB coach Randy Jordan believes "it'll take time for Antonio Gibson to learn protections and to diagnose blitzes."

It's not a surprise to see Gibson's running back coach question if Gibson is ready for a full workload. Gibson only handled 77 touches throughout his Memphis career and split his time between running back and receiver. When Washington drafted Gibson, they likely planned on easing him in, but they may have to force the issue now that Derrius Guice is off the roster. Gibson is currently in meetings with both the running back and receiver groups as he learns how to run routes, read blocks, and work in pass protection. ESPN's John Keim believes the Memphis product is talented, but "in an odd offseason it could take time for him to grasp all that he needs to do in order to fully contribute." Gibson will battle Adrian Peterson, Peyton Barber, J.D. McKissic, and Bryce Love for playing time. He's a classic boom-bust mid-round pick.

JONATHAN TAYLOR
RB, INDIANAPOLIS COLTS

The Athletic's Zak Keefer wrote, "Jonathan Taylor is expected to share carries with starter Marlon Mack."

Keefer continues by writing, "don’t be surprised if the rookie has a few breakout games and Reich stays with him." It's the consensus projection for this backfield; Mack and Taylor will split carries initially, but Taylor can become the clear-cut starter if he lives up to his draft profile. For three years at Wisconsin, Taylor showed high-end rushing ability and proceeded to light up the NFL Combine with 4.39 speed. In a vacuum, Taylor is a higher ceiling player than Mack, who is in the final year of his rookie contract. By the second half of the 2020 season, it'd be surprising if Taylor wasn't seeing 15-plus touches weekly. Reaching for Taylor in redraft fantasy leagues is risky because Taylor may not secure passing-down work, but he's a fine pick late in the fourth round.

CAM AKERS
RB, LOS ANGELES RAMS

Rams RB Cam Akers could get an "early opportunity to demonstrate his ability" in the team's crowded backfield, per ESPN's Lindsey Thiry.

It seems like an educated guess, but that's all we'll have in August as teams prepare for Week 1 without the preseason. While Darrell Henderson flashed in rare playing time last season, he "still must prove he is a starting-caliber back," according to Thiry. It will require at least some confidence in Akers to draft him in the sixth round (RB30 off the draft board). Going in the tenth round, Henderson remains a reasonably hedge play on the LA backfield.

BRANDON AIYUK
WR, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS

The Athletic's Matt Barrows expects No. 25 overall pick Brandon Aiyuk to be the 49ers' "best outside-the-hashes target."

Connecting dots, Barrows expects Aiyuk to "essentially (take) over for Emmanuel Sanders." Like most of the 49ers' pass catchers, Aiyuk is a YAC threat, but he also has the speed and catch radius to do damage on the outside. He was excellent on go routes in the PAC-12. The 49ers' passing-game distribution is a bit of a black box in the COVID year, but Aiyuk is well worth a late-round flier in 12-team leagues.

What is the "tenth round"? I think that was gone in the early 80s. Good work ESPN.

DENZEL MIMS
WR, NEW YORK JETS

Jets coach Adam Gase said second-round WR Denzel Mims injured his hamstring while running routes in practice.

"Just took a weird step and got it stretched out," Gase said. Unlike Frank Gore, who's currently sidelined with a hamstring injury for precautionary reasons himself, Mims' injury is reportedly "more serious" as he remains without a timetable for return. Gase even hinted on adding a veteran in the meantime if possible. At this rate, the rookie remains undraftable in 16-round re-draft leagues while teammate Breshad Perriman has a direct path to every-down opportunity alongside Jamison Crowder.

CLYDE EDWARDS-HELAIRE
RB, KANSAS CITY CHIEFS

ESPN's Adam Teicher reports Chiefs first-rounder Clyde Edwards-Helaire was the "featured back" in Friday's practice.

Coach Andy Reid confirmed as much in his post-practice presser, stating Edwards-Helaire will continue to get "a lot of work" with the first-team unit. "Is everything perfect?," Reid continued. "No, not right now. But he's working to get there.'' If anything, it's the first confirmation we've received that this is CEH's job to lose following Damien Williams' opt-out. DeAndre Washington arguably has standalone value as the rookie's backup at his current 14.10 ADP as the overall RB62, but Edwards-Helaire remains a top-seven discussion point ahead of padded practices.
