I ran a mock draft and it ended up with Tillman, Reed, Bane, Terry, Lewis, Williams, McDaniels all gone before our pick.

Among the guys left over I'm most interested in Flynn, Bey, and Woodard.

Flynn reminds me so much of Fred. He would be a good guy to groom either as Fred's replacement or his backup. Really smart defensively with quick hands, and excellent feel for the game offensively. 14th in the NCAA (tops among guards in this draft) in assist to turn over ratio. His numbers in his junior year compare favorably with Fred, in fact, they're borderline identical.

Fred: 13.6pts 5.2ast 1.7to 4.5reb 1.9stl 43fg% 35.7%fg-3pt

Flynn: 17.6pts 5.1ast 1.8to 4.5reb 1.8stl 44%fg 37.3%fg-3pt

As for Bey, I see him as a potentially a Rondae replacement at the 3/4 with better shooting and rebounding. Excellent team and individual defender and plays with energy and hustle.

Woodard isn't talked about a lot, but he's a guy who really intrigues me. He's got excellent size for a wing at 6'7 with a 7'1 wingspan. He's also got an NBA body right now at 230+ pounds, and he's an elite level leaper. One of the better shot blocking wings in the NCAA. Much improved spot up shooter from 3, and has an underrated post up game where he can physically overwhelm the majority of guards and wings put on him. Has the tools to be a lockdown defender but needs to improve foot work a bit. Puts effort in which is half the battle. He's more of a 3 right now but if he can improve his handles and shot creation like Pascal and OG, or even Demar, I would play him at the 2 where I think he physically would match up we'll with some of the bigger guards in the East like Brown, Butler, Beal, Oladipo.

I like how Flynn led his team to a 30-2 record even in a weak conference. I think he could top out at Mike Bibby.

The problem with Woodard is his quickness to guard smaller players.
I think we still need more SF, so I wouldn't mind Woodard, but I might have Marshall ahead of him, as Marshall can be a better perimeter player on offense, and capable of defending PG/SG/SF.

Toronto is essentially built on defensive activity feeding transition scoring -- which is exactly what this player does well.

His speed is really translatable to the NBA considering how well he can finish at the rim with either hand and create even without screen usage. Ranked 1st in his conference in transition scoring (4.9 ppg); At the rim scoring is almost like a big at 64.1%.

His defense is aided by his speed which allows him to jump into passing lanes (3.6 steal%) but he can defend on-ball 0.44 points per isolation possession [88th percentile].

Despite being a scorer he knows how to run a team and is a 5 star recruit and an All-American.

Basically the guy is the controlled chaos Toronto needs off the bench.

I agree with all this and I've said it before if this draft wasn't so deep on guards and I wasn't pretty confident that we were keeping Fred I'd have Dotson near the top of my list. He really would fit our culture so well

Potentially you could draft Devon Dotson and groom him to be the new Fred by letting him be the leader off the bench. After 2021 Lowery's future with the raps is murky and we will likely see Fred inheriting the starting pg position. TD is nice and hopefully tops off as a more consistent shooter version of Norman but right now he is looking more like a secondary play maker at best and not a full time ball handler.

I think I was overthinking it. Dotson is a 5 star guard that led the best team in the NCAA and his game translates well to the NBA and to Toronto. You see a guy like Cole Anthony mocked 10 spots higher and Dotson is a better player. You have Lowry for another year and he can help groom Dotson as a back-up.

Dotson actually reminds me a bit of Lowry in college. Good on-ball and off ball defender due to his strength and quickness, and he plays a bit reckless in the same ways Lowry used to.

I am not giving up on TD as it is early. He started off so well but during this restart and the tale end of the first part of the season his decision-making declined. I do agree that he is more of a secondary ball handler at this stage.

I like TD when he doesn't have to do too much. He is a great player to run off a screen and pull-up for a three.

I think I really like the idea of a Davis/Dotson bench backcourt next year. FVV and Powell also makes sense as the starters in the post-Lowry era.

I like Dotson but would prefer taller/stronger gaurds who you can play next to Fred/Lowry without being too small

Its why i like Maledon/Maxey so much, you can add ballhandling without giving up anything defense or size.

This is basically my thought process behind not taking him or really any pg aside from Theo with our first.

I guess it just depends on how far ahead the organization is thinking when making this pick and what the future plans are

I am high on TD too and the homer in me hopes he will eventually improve enough to inherit the starting sg spot. In a perfect world he and Doston will be groomed together coming off the bench similar to Fred and Delon.

Unfortunately I don't see Powell as our future starting sg post Lowery. I loved what he was doing this season before injuries but he needs to prove his consistency offensively and especially defensively. Like you know what you're going to get from OG defensively every game even if his shot isn't falling. Need to have that consistency from Norm.

Toronto has made a backcourt of Lowry and FVV work because they have guys with length like OG and Pascal and Serge/Marc surrounding them. The two experiments of combo guards like TD and Powell have had some good results, but at the end of the day you don't see Powell closing too many games or starting. TD drops out of the rotation at times.

FVV and Lowry play bigger than their size. FVV has a great steal/deflection rate, while Lowry is a strong post-up defender. Dotson has a similar body-type but with added quick twitch agility. His defensive analytics that show he has a chance to be a pest on defense and on offense his finishing ability that shows in every level of competition he has faced.

You can really see his speed balance and shiftiness on display during last year's combine:

I agree, the raw tools are tantalizing. I would have been less sanguine about his ability to tighten up his handle if we hadn't seen Demar, Pascal, and OG do just that. He reminds me a bit of Jimmy Jackson from his Mavericks days. Just a thick, physical, bull of a SG who can shoot threes and dunk with authority.

Oh for sure you can get away with Dotson/Fred at the 1/2. Just think a taller gaurd would allow you to go with more 3 gaurd lineups (some minutes in the future with Fred/TD/G for example) and maintain switchability.

I wouldn’t mind ending up with Dotson (hes a top 20 guy for me) just thinking more in ideal terms

The problem with Woodard is his quickness to guard smaller players.
I think we still need more SF, so I wouldn't mind Woodard, but I might have Marshall ahead of him, as Marshall can be a better perimeter player on offense, and capable of defending PG/SG/SF.

Do you have Marshall ahead of Bey though? He may be able to guard 1-4.

Can OG guard 1-5? I think so. :D

I think OG can guard 1-4, don't think he is those banger type who goes against the C, but OG has more potential than anyone we are picking at 28.

I like the court vision of Marshall, and think he can play PG/SG on offense. Meanwhile, Bey would be another good prospect, but his strength being rebounding may not be something we desperately looking for, as I think we need more ball penetration and passing, where Marshall maybe a better prospect on the offensive end.

This
If they think Dotson is the guy I'm all for it, it just really limits his playing time given how small we already play

I think I’d rather sign Harry Giles than draft any non lottery center in this class. (Poku is lottery level for me)
