OK, but the main point I was making was quoting the finding that police killing of unarmed blacks has received 9x the coverage as police killings of unarmed whites.

Are you OK with the media distorting reality and public discourse?

Chicago getting destroyed again tonight. I don't really know how anyone can defend this, it's just a bunch of people out getting free ****. Has nothing to do with BLM movement anymore.

its really pretty simple but people tend to let their tribal instincts dictate their opinions. You got bad protesters just like you got bad cops, common denominator always falls back to people.

Its not a unique thought but how much of what we have seen the last two months in terms of BLM/Protests has to do with the covid situation? I dont feel the protests or violence would be as longstanding if not for the change that covid has brought to so many peoples lives.

As far as the protests there is no doubt good has come from it but at this point i think we are seeing diminishing returns.

Trump is right. Bring in the Federal troops. This must stop and violence must be dealt with. Chicago cops are handcuffed because of the BLM movement

I don't know why people think protesters = looters.

Looters are criminals taking advantage of the situation. You are right it has nothing to do with the BLM movement.

dag, I was driving down there last night to upgrade a couple of servers. Guess I'm putting that on hold!

Sounds kinda like this rioting was a response to a shooting in Englewood.
The response was like 'you're gonna shoot our kids in Englewood - then we're gonna come down and destroy your Mag Mile.

probably not an ideal solution - but I think it does send a pretty loud message

Well, when you have actual BLM members yelling “**** the police.” & other profanities during “peaceful protests” it doesn’t help the situation much. It’s an incredibly poorly run organization. Also, when they’re protesting side by side with ANTIFA it doesn’t help their situation either.

There’s good BLM protestors (when celebrities /professional athletes are involved) & there’s this stupid/unorganized group who block off traffic, go on highways, & join the violence with groups like ANTIFA. Many members of BLM movement were ok with the destruction. That’s leadership for you.

Very poorly run organization. NAACP should have shut them down fast & took over.

I sure hope Chicago doesn't deteriorate like Detroit did. It would be a national travesty. But it's not out of the question. The more violence and unrest, the more people will likely move away who can, diminishing the tax revenue, further compromising the communities that need it most.

Unfortunately the Southside has been Detroit for 40 years.

Too much money, industry and real estate is in the Northside for it to deteriorate. Kind of like this temporary NYC flight, rent and properties are going to sky-rocket again, perhaps more than ever (seeing as Chicago is comparatively cheap), when the Trump/Covid/Economy/Unrest cools off in 2-3 years. Hopefully not 5.

The pension/budget crisis is real but I think Chicago can navigate. Lot of retirees are leaving though. That may or may not be a problem.

I have a well off friend who I have known for over 30 years. He has a high end property for sale just north of Chicago near the shore line. About three weeks ago his realtor called him and told him to raise the asking price as he was told she noticed a surge of well off people who are looking to move out of Chicago into the near by suburbs.

The place has not sold yet, but he followed the realtors advice that he works with, and has also had more inquiries in the last few weeks than he has had all year so far.

If his realtor is right on the trend, movement has already started to happen. He currently has two high end market places for sale he has been working on in different areas, and plans to stay in whatever one does not sell first until he finds his next project.

Unfortunately, the looters use the protest as cover and that's where it really leads to issues. Police try to break up the peaceful protest because of the looting and protesters are even more upset their peaceful protests are being broken up.

Where there even protests downtown? Just seemed like organized looting.

“Next, the young person ran away, rightfully fearing for his safety in this dangerous interaction with racist armed police.

  ....I needed a good laugh. Better watch out for the KKK Chicago police!!!

After police shot this young man, members of the Englewood community are traumatized and want answers. The people of Englewood showed up immediately because they wanted to protect their community members from harm. CPD, meanwhile, was only interested in protecting itself; their response to these bystanders was sending in hundreds of officers with assault rifles, tear gas, and batons. These cops intimidated and beat people for nothing more than being at the scene of CPD’s violence. Yesterday, Chicago police continually proved that they do not keep us safe — they only cause violence, and escalation after the fact.

Traumatized? Protect their community from harm?!?! Give me a break! So, this is what they’re traumatized by now? Not the hundreds being murdered every damn year? Innocent children being killed? ....yea, ok.

Now they’re “trying to protect their community from harm”? Because of police shooting a suspect?? BLM as a movement/organization is a complete joke! Just look at the **** they stand for.... That article & website is propaganda trash. Do people really follow this ****?

More From Article:
The mayor clearly has not learned anything since May, and she would be wise to understand that the people will keep rising up until the CPD is abolished and our Black communities are fully invested in.

“Until the CPD is abolished” That’s pure gold!

https://www.foxnews.com/us/black-lives-matter-holds-rally-chicago-support-arrested-looting-unrest.amp

Black Lives Matter members in Chicago held a rally on Monday to support the more than 100 arrested last night following widespread looting and rioting that caused at least $60 million in property damage and saw 13 police officers injured, according to a report.

The rally was organized by Black Lives Matter Chicago and was held at a police station in the South Loop where organizers say individuals are currently being held in custody. At least one organizer called the looting tantamount to "reparations."
"I don't care if someone decides to loot a Gucci or a Macy's or a Nike store, because that makes sure that person eats," said Ariel Atkins, a BLM organizer, according to NBC Chicago. "That makes sure that person has clothes."

"That is reparations," Atkins continued. "Anything they wanted to take, they can take it because these businesses have insurance."

The unrest was prompted by a social media post urging people to converge on Chicago's business district after police shot a man on the South Side around 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

Officers had responded to a call about a man with a gun in the Englewood neighborhood. While being pursued by police, the man, who was on foot, "turned and fired shots" at officers before being struck himself and taken to a local hospital, Deputy Chief Delonda Tally told Fox 32 Chicago.

Latrell Allen, 20, was charged with attempted murder Monday after firing on officers, according to Chicago police. A video posted on Facebook around 6:30 p.m. falsely claimed that officers had shot and killed a 15-year-old boy.

The shooting prompted hundreds of people to descend on downtown Chicago early Monday with vandals smashing the windows of dozens of businesses and making off with merchandise, cash machines and anything else they could carry, police said.

"This was not an organized protest. Rather, this was an incident of pure criminality," Police Superintendent David Brown told reporters. "This was an act of violence against our police officers and against our city."

BLM organizers criticized police reports surrounding the shooting, noting that none of the officers involved had body cameras, which investigators confirmed, according to NBC Chicago.

Black Lives Matter Chicago issued a statement obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times that read, "The mayor clearly has not learned anything since May, and she would be wise to understand that the people will keep rising up until the [Chicago Police Department] is abolished and our Black communities are fully invested in," the group said in a statement.

"Police say a lot of things," Atkins added. "Even though the Department of Justice said with the consent decree they are no longer allowed to chase people, they decided they were going to chase, and they shot this young man multiple times."

See this is why white people say BLM is stupid. They are just digging their own grave by creating more campaign ads for Trump. All they have to do is just show all the looters running rampant and splash the words, this is the real BLM movement. Independents will switch their votes so fast to Trump

To be honest, I was quite puzzled over this which is how the statement started.

Next, the young person ran away, rightfully fearing for his safety in this dangerous interaction with racist armed police. The cops then pursued him on foot, going directly against the DOJ recommendation to eliminate foot chases

I wasnt 100% sure the site was legit.

Major gap/conflict between both sides, and no confirmation either way, some very bold statements.

There's no shortage of black people who aren't in line with BLM either.

Unfortunately Trump is a problem in so many ways. It's really all on Biden to pick a sane running mate that has a reasonable perspective on stuff like this. It's not too late for him to grab a ton of the independents if he does. I know I'm watching closely. I really hope he doesn't make a choice that leads me to feel compelled to vote for Jorgensen.

Trying to make sense of a chaotic young movement is nonsensical and a waste of time.

Obviously looting is not beneficial for anybody. Not even the irresponsible looters who get free things; they’ll probably be arrested at one point or another.

BLM has two choices - accept corporate/big-money help (NBA for example) and remove radical rhetoric from their language, become a main-stream organization with political presence.

Or it can continue to be a loosely organized “influencer” group with no tangible plans, leaders and political presence.

Fox News, Trump and corps picked up on the Tea Party and made something out of nonsense. It’s an extreme and dangerous political movement IMO, but it is still in the half-realm of moderate politics (though Trump is about as extreme a president as we’ve ever had).

BLM probably needs new leadership. Politely demote the founders. There is zero cohesion. To not even take a part in the Democratic primary process? Who is their candidate on any level Of government? Kamala Harris is an Indian-Jamaican. Cory Booker is a moderate. Why aren’t there more African-American leaders running for political positions of power? At a certain point, I don’t buy that the Democratic party is “excluding“ them. AOC did it as a young latina. I don’t find any inspiring Main-Stream leadership from the AA Community. There is no shortage of brilliant black influencers, but when Kanye is the only one attempting to make a run (and he happens to be narcissistic unstable), then the community should look in the mirror and ask what they can do differently.

I say it with kind regards and support for the idea of the movement/activism.
