True, and thank god for small blessings.

Didn't they hire Vinny Del Negro instead?

Ha yes.

I would've preferred to have seen a D'Antoni/Rose run. Especially with FA input- perhaps prioritized recruiting Joe Johnson, or who knows what the Lebron recruitment would've gone like.

LOL but at least it was easier to fire VDN when Thibs came up than it would have been with Pringles.

But Vinny was a much better coach. In the sense that a “better coach” is one who is willing to forego professional representation in negotiating a multimillion dollar contract with a JD/CPA owner.

So, basically, if you’re willing to commit malpractice against yourself, you can work for Jerry Reinsdorf.

76ers had a bad year considering their expectations. After amassing all those high picks and tanking, they've managed to turn their roster into something that's nothing special. Clearly, they've had bad coaching too. It's hard to be excited that the Bulls got a GM and now maybe a head coach from that organization.

I had forgotten about VDN, the guy whose big gameplan was to bench Rose in the 4th quarters. I remember when Paxson had directly interceded and forced him to play Rose. What a coach.

I'm not sure how D'Antoni would have been in Chicago, but MDA always empowers PGs, be it HOFers like Nash or undrafted kids like Lin.

The only good thing I can say about VDN was that he was so horrifically bad that he got himself fired so quick we were able to hire Thibs. D'Antoni probably would have done well enough to stay on.

More proof that tanking and rebuilding doesn’t guarantee a championship team. Bulls are so dumb for following that route and fans actually believing that is the only way.

I still think Hinkie successfully stacked the deck in their favor. The Colonjello's nepotism was the real beginning of the downfall IMO. Jerry C being brought on and then hilariously hiring his inept son Bryan led to the Markelle Fultz trade/draft pick debacle. One can only wonder what a qualified GM would have done with those assets.

Then they had to fire BC for failing so immediately. And brought in Elton Brand who has mightily struggled in a role he seemingly wasn't ready for. The Tobias Harris trade was flat bad, and further compounded by the feeling of being "pot committed" to where Elton max'ed out a clearly sub-max player. Signing Horford to that size of contract was another mistake. But Elton, a big man himself, surely saw his star Big mans injury history and thought this was necessary (wrong as he was).

That would be nice but you think they would fire him? That’s why AK should wait just in case something like this happens.

They just extended Malone to 2023, so it would be an expensive move to fire him and hire another experienced high priced playoff coach. But coach salaries are a pittance compared to players and most teams aren't owned by JR so who knows.

A lot of fans seem to want him gone but we fans are pretty eager to axe coaches in general.

I'm curious if AK will interview Brett Brown or if he's strictly looking for someone younger. 16 seasons of NBA coaching would make him one of the most veteran guys available.

I don’t know in this league. You’d think MPJ coming on and missing Harris and Barton would get him next season.

If Jazz had Bogdon and Nuggs had Harris and Barton I’d still go with Jazz. I love Jokic and the Nuggs too.

The Bulls didn't actually tank well though. They half-assed it and hoped to get lucky while other teams were intentionally losing more games.

My choice : Kenny Smith

Fantastic basketball mind and teacher, player's type coach and former championship player.

Honorable mention : Jacque Vaughn

I've heard Kenny Smith's name brought up a few times over the years on this board. What are basing his qualifications off of? Not saying there's no chance he turns out being a good coach, just wondering why people think so. I mean we breifly see his X's and O's on TNT, but is there more to it?

Tanking obviously doesn't guarantee a title, nothing does, but the issue with this Sixers team isn't what happened during the Hinkie era. Colangelo and Brand have burned all assets they had and now they're stuck with 2 of the worst contracts in the league.

I like Juwan Howard. Little early to be leaving Michigan though?

I have a hard time seeing the TNT guys leave, it's an amazing gig. They barely work, just ramble on for a bit while watching games, and make more than what coach salaries pay now. I would imagine Kenny is the least paid and he still makes $4M per year. Head coaching is a brutal job and they get blamed for all the failures of front offices, owners, and players combined.

Kenny Smith has been with Inside the NBA for over 20 years now. At some point, he's going to want a new challenge. Even if he leaves to coach, I assume he'd have an open invitation to return to Inside the NBA down the road.
