People need to decide whether to do the safe route or go the risky route. Risky routes can often lead to a star. Safe routes lead to a complementary piece.

I actually disagree, strongly.

I think the definition of safe needs to be revisited:

Safe:
- Good shooting form
- Good defensive floor
- Good size or wingspan
- Atleast moderately athletic
- Fast
- Good ball handling
- High IQ
- Multi positional

Unsafe:
- Slow or unathletic
- Bad shooting form
- Terrible FG%
- Bad IQ
- Lack of fundamentals
- Bad handling
- Weak
- Injury prone
- Bad defensive awareness

X-Factors that only translate if you have fantastic handles and scoring ability:
- Hyper athleticism
- Elite vision

Doesn’t really matter but some people continue making a big deal about it:
- Age

With late bloomers like Curry, Butler, Draymond... I don’t why people give a crap. If a player is dominating at 18, then that means they’re ready and must be snagged early (Lebron, Luka). Kawhi had 2 college years and didn’t end up like Cody Zeller.

Somehow we associate McDermott and WCJ with “safe”, but Doug was a classic example of a guy I considered a very risky NBA translation, and WCJ was basically the rawest project guy in the top-7 besides Bamba - he was basically a smart defender with a very strong frame, solid fundamentals, good wing-span and a hint of a jumpshot, ability to handle, etc. He was also the youngest player in the draft. But on the other hand, he really didn’t project any particular scoring ability besides the low post (with an undersized length for NBA Cs).

But anyway, I’d say if your pick has atleast 5 unsafe flags, then you are really just gambling against yourself.

My point, is there was nothing risky about Giannis, Kawhi, Jimmy, George, Westbrook, Rose, Luka. Granted, they were later picks... But if a guy has like 2 or 3 faults, but a whole mess of a great skills and attributes, you can’t highlight those faults and pigeon them a roleplayer. They were safe picks with star ceilings. Even had they not become stars with elite scoring, Kawhi or Jimmy would’ve had long NBA careers.

A starting recipe for a star IMO is elite handles, strong scoring ability (either inside or out, or even just getting to the FT line), and a good court awareness. If they don’t have that, then you might as well skip the potential star conversation.

There is a difference between high risk medium reward picks and medium risk high reward picks.

You miss out on Trae Young because he's small and not a defensive stand-out.
You miss out on Michael Porter Jr. because of his injury concern
You let Mitchell Robinson slide because of no freshman year.
You don't go after Donovan Mitchell because of size.
Or Bam Adebayo because you think he's just a rim runner with no other skill set.
Same with Pascal Siakam.

All of these players were not considered high risk medium reward picks and they didn't have most of these issues.

Unsafe:
- Slow or unathletic
- Bad shooting form
- Terrible FG%
- Bad IQ
- Lack of fundamentals
- Bad handling
- Weak
- Injury prone
- Bad defensive awareness

You go for high risk picks that you think can heavily develop at the next level.

I think you're focusing on the Unsafe list and not looking at the Safe list.

I'd go for Trae because he checked almost every safe box besides good defensive floor.

I still think MPJ was worth skipping at #7. I wasn't against taking him cause I saw he's an agile 6'10 handler and shooter, but I still don't think he was worth the risk with that high a pick.

Bam could handle the ball well for his position. His fundamentals were solid - he didn't display bad IQ. His college shooting stats and percentages were all very solid (besides for not having a 3P ball in college at all, which in many ways is still a long-shot expectation for defensive centers). Certainly large and athletic with a good defensive floor. Not injury prone or weak.

Mitchell's wing-span was rated very good. But yeah- certainly an outlier. I have trouble thinking of undersized star SGs in the last 20 years. I've got 2: Iverson and Mitchell... then there's McCollum, FVV, Avery Bradley, maybe Marcus Smart if we don't consider him a PG, neither of whom ever made an ASG or All-NBA team (but very good players no doubt). But regardless, I could say with confidence (in hindsight ;)) that Donovan had exactly zero of the 'Unsafe' flags I listed.

Yet he was the #1 prospect coming out of high school. So yes, by definition, they were.

Nobody gives a **** how Rivals/247 ranks anybody.

Ok how about every nba draft scouting site that lists Wiseman ahead of Poku? Do you give a **** about that?

The same could be said about Porzingus. These draft sites are rarely ever correct, especially when it comes to International players.

Poku is an extremely intriguing basketball prospect because of his height and skill level. His YouTube highlights are impressive but I don’t know what the level of competition is.

I’m glad we have AK running things now because he likely has the connections needed to accurately evaluate him.

For the most part no.

But by all means continue with your "Wiseman is great because he's ranked high" argument.

And you start yours for a player you’ve never seen play before.

I don’t even care about Wiseman. I am looking for a high upside player this year so he’s in the conversation.

But, at a minimum, I know it’s silly to try and outsmart everyone by pointing to a player you’ve never heard of but from a draft website, the same sites that have seen them both and (presumably) unanimously put one ahead of the other.

I said I wanted Poku in the mid-1st?

Porzingis was a consensus lottery/top 5 pick for 2 years running in stronger drafts. And that was on the various draft websites as well.

I agree the one thing missing from Euro scouting at this point seems to be accurate intel. AK would seem to have an advantage there.

So if you’re the Bulls and can only pick between Wiseman and Poku, who are you taking?

If Wiseman interviews well and shows a willingness to just be a defensive anchor and at-the-rim finisher, I'll take him.

If Wiseman has delusions on becoming Towns/Embiid and a star big with an expanded game offensively, then I'm riding with Poku.

I'm taking the best shooter out of Hayes, Halliburton, and Advija.

Hornets fan here just perusing your board to see what you all are thinking. I would be very surprised if Wiseman makes it to you folks, we have a glaring need at C and seem in a unique situation to use a high pick on a big.

I am hopeful that we won't take Ball if he falls, but no real read on that from the team. I know we did send scouts (maybe our GM too) to scout Ball in person before COVID shut everything down so he's obviously on our radar.

I personally hope we take one of Wiseman (if he's there), Okongwu, or Haliburton.

I just don't think Wiseman drops below #2.

Either because GS has traded it to someone who will still take Wiseman or GS just takes Wiseman for themselves for future benefits.

People keep saying they dont need a project going for a title, but at the same time, its not like they have some allstar center on the team. Anyone can play that role of defense and rim running, so its not going to hurt if they grab Wiseman.

It would make the most logical sense for the Hornets to choose Wiseman or another center though. Its their biggest weakness by far. Even though I think Cody is a solid player.

I don't see how a team that was playing Chandler Hutchison at power forward passes on Obi Toppin tbh.

Looks to me like Halliburton's a better shooter than Hayes BUT if AK wants to put his stamp on this franchise it mght be a good idea to stay the heck out of Iowa. I don't have a good evaluation on Avdija. I wasn't a believer on Luka though, so I'll trust AK & others on the board to evaluate overseas players.

Agreed on GS. The #2 pick this year just does not have the value this year. At best, it negates having to take on Wiggins' contract. So they are going to be stuck with the pick, and the only player who can actually help them in the next two years is Wiseman, maybe Avidja. It seems like a no brainer for them just from a fit perspective. He can focus on dunking and getting better at defense.

Charlotte is the interesting pick, assuming Edwards and Wiseman. Like the Bulls, they really have no reason not to go BPA, but I don't see how they think Ball will fit in well with Graham and Rozier. And Rozier's contract is probably already untradeable. Seems like a developmental nightmare with that trio, for all three of them.

FWIW, as a Hornets fan I thought the Kemba situation was completely mismanaged and doing a S&T for Rozier was a terrible decision. I don't factor Rozier into any franchise building plans. I wouldn't think twice about picking a PG or ball handling SG because Rozier is currently on the roster.

I think Graham would play well off a taller PG so I like both Hayes and Haliburton next to him.

Looking back at Jayson Tatum's NBADraft.net profile he's labelled as a streaky scorer who struggled getting to the rim and there were concerns about his ability to create his own offense against NBA wings. His NBA comp was Danny Granger.

Granger's a pretty nice NBA comp, most people would be happy with, and Tatum seems to have already passed that.

Yes, I've never understood the BS cliches during draft time like "BPA" and "safe pick."

It's a load of crap. Tyrus Thomas supposedly had a way higher ceiling than LaMarcus Aldridge - but Aldridge's player archetype was far closer to past all-time great big men than freaking Tyrus Thomas's.

"BPA?" What the hell does that even mean? It's such nonsense people say when they want to sound like they're expert scouts.
