Round 1, Game 5: Utah Jazz @ Denver Nuggets

Post#1 » by Inigo Montoya » Tue Aug 25, 2020 9:02 am

Every game now is a closeout game. I wonder if the Nuggets will show some fight or if they'll just look demoralized and disinterested.

The real decision the Jazz FO is making is between Continuity, Cap Flexibility, and Cash Considerations.

In reality, IF the Jazz hadn't fumbled their way into the OT loss in game 1, with the mental lapses (8 second violation) and 3-4 turnovers in a row, this series would be over. I was impressed the Nugs fought in game 4, but was more impressed by how the Jazz reacted mentally and hung in there to give themselves the chance to win it at the end. Great growth game! I see it continuing, just proving again how wrong I was before the series began. GO JAZZ!

I actually think the Jazz played pretty lazy in game 4. Didn't rebound, weren't active on defense, and offensively they didn't have to work hard for shots. Got to be careful, we stole the last game.

Gary Harris was upgraded from doubtful to questionable at Rotowire. At the risk of putting a reverse jinx on Harris to play well off the bench and have a positive impact, I am going to note that Harris hasn't played in a real game since March; he has been dealing with nagging, lower body injuries these last two seasons, and his play and shooting percentages for these last two seasons has been underwhelming relative to his $16 to $20 mill/year contract.

I hope this young man overcomes his nagging injuries and resumes what started out as a very promising NBA career --- but just hope he doesn't return to action with great shooting against the Jazz tonight! Go Jazz!

Yes, Denver got 46 points in the paint last game versus averaging 33 PIP the first three games, including the overtime game. In addition, they got 17 ORB last game versus averaging 12 ORB the first three games.

Juwan Morgan only played 11 minutes the last game versus averaging 20 mpg the first three games. Seems like Juwan helps our defense in the paint. If he could start knocking down a wide open shot from time to time, he would probably still be averaging 20 mpg.

I thought we lost Murray lot on the perimeter too, especially at the beginning of the game. Late in the game he was hitting more shots off the dribble, but playing off the ball early with Morris really seemed to help him get going. I think he was also the beneficiary of a couple wide open 3's in second chance opportunities. Royce wasn't on his game.

If we're going to give Rudy a little help with Jokic...which I'm not sure we should...we should always be helping of of Craig, Millsap, Grant ect. Anyone but Murray. Can't let him get comfortable again.

Denver changed their lineups. With Quin having a chance to see that play out, I'd expect we make a few defensive adjustments.

Jokic was fun that quarter. Would like to see if we can win when he's playing at his best, we already proved we can when Murray goes nuts.

Clarkson was only 1-5 in Q1, including zero threes, but then got going in Q2, shooting 3-3 threes and 4-5 overall.

Man, Royce passing up shooting that wide open three and then turning it in to a turnover at the 3:07 mark was a killer. Everything went to heck after that. Still 44 seconds left though, but down six.
