Can someone teach the Pacers how to rebound the basketball?

Post#1 » by Topofthekey » Tue Aug 25, 2020 10:45 am

All those offensive rebounds that they give up is just a disgrace

One example, look at the number 6 play in this video

Shot goes up. Pacers stand still and look. Adebayo goes for the easy, almost uncontested putback

Myles, Doug, and Vic were all near the basket, it's three of them vs one Heat player, Adebayo

Yet none of them decide to block out Adebayo. Apparently they all felt the best way to contribute to the rebounding battle is to stare at the ball while it's in the air

Like, if you stare hard enough, maybe the ball will fall into your hands

Come on. I've seen random people do a better job at blocking out while playing pick up basketball. The Pacers shouldn't be this bad at rebounding

It legit made me Google "is boxing-out allowed in the NBA", just to make sure it's not a new rule thing

Play 2 answers for a large part your question. Our players lack talent to rebound.

The Pacers are a bad rebounding team with Domas.

The rebounding was a DISGRACE in game 4. I don't care to look up the final numbers, but with a few minutes left in the 4th quarter, the rebounding margin was 22 in the favor of the Heat.

After a timeout with 2-3 minutes left in the game, the Heat were inbounding the ball. They missed shot after shot, each time following it and out hustling our disorganized team for the rebound. We were down 6 (maybe 8, I can't exactly recall) and after a sequence of 4, count 'em, 4 offensive rebounds, they scored yet again. It was demoralizing and signaled the end of the game. We had no shot after expending all of our fresh energy out of a timeout on defending possessions straight without getting a shot to score ourselves.

We were able to do the hard part of the play, which was to get a stop. But we couldn't 't grab a **** rebound. It was the same story in game 1 in the 4th quarter. We just can't put it all together.

The obvious problems with this team are the 3 point shooting, offensive gameplan and execution and getting to the line. The rebounding issue goes under the radar, especially while Sabonis is on the court. But this was pitiful and it has to be addressed.

This is the one part of the defense that has always been an issue. Part of it has clearly been deploying poor rebounding bigs like Hibbert and Turner. But for some reason we seem to always lack that last effort to get the rebound. I'm not sure if it's personnel or scheme at this point. No matter what, it's an effort issue though as we saw Jimmy just go in and get boards when he needed to.

Part of its scheme. We roll one guard out on every long shot for an attempt at a fast break/outlet and many times, a second guard is confused as to who should roll, so we’re down two rebounders as the offense crashes 4-5.

You’d think one of our two big men coaches would focus on rebounding, huh?

Rebounding will be a struggle when you play an undersized 4 with Myles Turner. We've been doing that since his second year in the league.

Very true. Though what has always concerned me are the times it has continually happened when we need a stop and no one's trying to run.

Amen. And how many times one guard didn’t realize the other guard also run long, so then we’re down to just 3 guys in the half court.

All the more reason I'm happy to see the team move on from Nate

Rebounding is a team effort

The problem with the team's rebounding woes is not so much that Pacers lack strong individual rebounders, its more to do with how the team can't even get the fundamentals, like boxing out, right

There's really no excuse that an NBA team does this poorly at something that is so basic in basketball

Not sure what a coach will do differently that will help them rebound the ball better. They are not build as a very athletic team and get out muscled in many cases.
