I respect Lebron for this. He knows the league needs him. By saying he won't play, he might actually compel some kind of action.

This will not end well.

There would be plenty of short term damage but the league will survive. There are plenty of woke tech companies (Amazon/YouTube) with deep pockets that would love to swoop in and own the rights to the NBA. People didn't stop watching the Olympics forever because of Tommie Smith and John Carlos or boxing because of Muhammad Ali. They will be on the right side of history

Amazon is the opposite of woke. They're a regressive employer.

At this stage. No thanks.

We never thought of you as dancing animals as B said. We were very interested in watching basketball.... But we also don't need your good graces to get us through our days. Go forth and make cities better and safer maybe without cops!

With all that's happening, you still find a way to hate on LeBron.

Yikes.

well, there is no season without the lakers. and lebron is the only one with that individual clout to get this done. and if the owners won't listen to lebron, who the hell will they listen to???

it kinda says to ownership, what sort of relationship do we really have? are we just assets or people?

Owners will "budge" and do what exactly?

Well LeBron already made his millions, so he can take a stand. If the season gets canceled because of this, I'm personally going to have to think long and hard about whether I want to waste any more time on this Basketball Entertainment League.

Way to go LeBron. I'm sure a ton of kids at the college level and league rookies are swearing at you right now for messing with their future income.

What exactly do you expect to accomplish by getting the season cancelled? Two months of national TV exposure with BLM in viewers faces non stop will also go away. That was a sh*t ton of free BLM advertising you are personally making disappear (* well you, your team and the Clippers). Is that a good thing? You are also pissing a ton of people off who put up with a lot of crap to make the restart happen, and a ton of fans who got involved and started caring about their teams and the game again.

But I'm sure you have a plan right? Please tell us what you want your team owners do to make the situation better? Tell me how getting the rest of the playoffs cancelled accomplishes anything good.

Maybe you feel that you should be marching in a protest somewhere instead of playing the game that made you your millions. I don't know. Maybe you'd like to share your opinion about the situation, BLM, every bad cop shooting, etc. Fine. But quit on the game now, and do you really think more than 10% of your current fans will actually give a crap about your opinions about anything not basketball related? I'd be shocked if it is even 10%. I won't even see them. Cancel the season and I stop watching sports, maybe until the next season starts, maybe for good. I'm undecided at the moment.

Sigh. Maybe I'm just ranting because I'm pissed about the season possibly getting cancelled. I think my points above are valid, at least at the moment, in my rant state of mind, and I'm sure there are good arguments for why what the Lakers and Clippers are doing is a good thing. Black Lives DO Matter. I just think you are going about it the wrong way.

Headlines were grabbed by 'postponing' (boycotting) some games tonight. But kill the rest of this season and you are killing months of free headlines, air time, and daily BLM commentary that could have been going out to millions of fans. Poof. Its gone. We all stop watching sports.

Well done.

It's really amazing. The NBA spends (hundreds of?) MILLIONS of dollars to protect these pampered sports heroes from a global pandemic, then gives these jocks the licence to post protest slogans on their jerseys, encourages kneeling during the unifying national anthem, maintains a business model that pays them exorbitant salaries, gives them a major platform to espouse their most well elucidated philosophies and thoughts, and then boom, we gone. Where did humility and gratitude go? What about wisdom and foresight and partnership?

That's actually a very good point. Well thought out response on a message board. I'm impressed!

Just don't say "right side of history". That saying annoys the **** out of me. The right side of history is whomever wins, even if they were corrupt, evil and wrong.

Jeff Bezos already owns the largest retailer in the world. And the Washington Post where we get our news. Why not the NBA? And your mortgage? And the Grand Canyon and the rights to milk? He's got the funding!!
In Jeff we trust! And well thought out! We are for the little guy who can't protect herself! Let's NBA! And I'll take some SOMA with that!

Judging by this thread it really looks like the callousness and privilege led disregard for real issues extends well beyond just the U.S. Basketball is a freaking game. If you're more concerned with your entertainment than black people in America being treated like second class citizens then your priorities really demonstrate what kind of person you are.

What the LA teams are doing is awesome and every team should follow suit.

Smith and Carlos participated in the Olympics and used it as a platform to bring global awareness to the plight of African Americans. Ali was banned from boxing for refusing to go to Vietnam, he did not refuse to box.

IMO, the most prudent form of action would be to continue the season but only play the game. No interviews, no post-game, no half-time, and no no pre-game access to players, with the demand that that time be allotted to discussion of systemic racism and police brutality.
