Nate talked with Scott Agness, formerly of The Athletic, back with his old site Fieldhouse Files.

They don't watch us. Which is fair, as I don't watch Wolves games, or Grizzlies games, etc. Just the nature of it all.

But when they do, they hear national commentators talk about how Nate coached teams always play hard, always overachieve, and he never makes excuses (heard this several times during the playoffs and then Nate makes the injury excuse after losing). Not that they should be saying bad things, but there's a perception that Nate elevated the team because we have consistently been thought as more in the Wizards/Magic territory of late than the Sixers/Heat.

Same thing happened with Vogel. It was time to move on and there was backlash from everyone saying Indy was stupid for letting such a good coach go. Then we hired Nate and it was that Indy was stupid for hiring a retread who only got the job because of his connections with the front office.

Nate also spoke with Bob Kravitz of the Athletic:
https://theathletic.com/2027180/2020/08/27/kravitz-former-pacers-coach-nate-mcmillan-speaks-out-about-his-dismissal/
He will not, however, be a head coach this coming season, even though he figures to be a candidate for several of the NBA’s job openings.

“I’m going to take this year and just look at things,” he said. “A lot has changed, the league and the game have changed, so I’ll take this year and see what happens, but I won’t get back into it this season.”

And with J. Michael of the IndyStar:
https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nba/pacers/2020/08/27/pacers-nate-mcmillan-if-dont-get-out-1st-round-somebody-else-needs-have-opportunity/3444880001/
Quickly, the Pacers unraveled against the Heat, who were more disciplined and tougher. Toughness typically isn't a problem for McMillan's teams. That's how they had the Cavs on the brink of elimination two years ago.

That gene had evaporated.

The front office wanted to see more imagination from McMillan's offense. McMillan insisted the answer was as simple as winning individual matchups vs. a team that had superior individuals.

They wanted to see a coach who invested more time in personal relationships with the players rather than telling them to play harder and be better.

Malcolm Brogon, who played in the 5-out system of Mike Budenholzer for three seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, was among the players most displeased with McMillan's offensive philosophy, league sources told IndyStar.

Pretty universal in all the interviews. Before the season, he agreed that if he couldn't get out of the 1st round, they should give someone else the chance. He thought the injuries may have given him another year. He seems to imply that his contract was specific to expiring June 31, and that was why his option was guaranteed....though the NBA unilaterally extended all contracts to the end of the season, whenever that may be (otherwise, we would have had to have re-signed Justin Holiday, Jakarr, and Alize as they all would've expired June 31 and been free agents in the bubble :dontknow: ). Played the personnel he was given, but he would've liked to have run more. Etc. Check out all 3 links for more.

I don't think I realized Nate was only like 36 when he got made coach of the Sonics.

I'm 33. :o :o :o

33? You're barely old enough to drink! I'm 58 as of about a week ago.

After the PG thing I said the Pacers should dump Nate but every year the team did better than expected, this year was supposed to be a wasted season with Victor out. Then the depth became an issue with Sabonis and Lamb out. But I don't know what happened in the series with Miami because I didn't watch any of it. Sounds like the team quit.

But I'm not really too concerned with it now I'm sick of the politics being spewed by these overpaid snowflakes and daffodils in the NBA, I'm sick of the crooked Refs, the China loving NBA management and the whole mess.

It makes me sick because I've watch the Pacers since I was about 6 years old, 50 plus years I've been one of the biggest basketball fans there is, and now I'm about done. I don't really care if there's a 2020-21 season or not. I found that the 4 plus months of no sports and no off season draft and signings we should have seen has made me realize that watching re-runs of cartoons is just as much fun as watching the NBA, MBL and NFL.

Somehow, I actually am barely old enough to drink. I'm definitely not straight edge, but I barely drank at all in my teens or 20s. It's only been the last couple years that I discovered some wines that don't taste like dirty socks.

Or maybe it's my taste buds that changed.

I went to games at the Fairgrounds Pepsi Coliseum when we had great teams with Mel, Neto, Billy Keller and the great Roger Brown, and don't forget Dr Dunk himself, Darnell Hillman. I was at the first game in the old Market Square Arena and was there for the "Hang'em high" series against the Spurs.

But I think I'm done. These players have turned this once great game into a freakshow of political pornography! This is called killing the goose that laid the golden eggs, cutting off ones nose to spite your face. Like I said 4 months of shutdown has taught me something, that is that sports are a joke and a bad dirty joke at that.

Well gotta go now it's time to watch re-runs of South Park on Plex.

come on. you are entitled to a political opinion and just because they are athletes they are not allowed to have opinions - or feelings?

I know this is not the time or place for this, but do you have any doubt that had the 17 year old boy whose mother drove him from Illinois to Wisconsin with an automatic weapon had not been white, the Kenosha police would have shot him?

I'm not condoning violence by either the police or the protesters, but I strongly believe that refusing to listen to people with whom we disagree is a big part of the problem. Studies show that when people only talk to people who share their views, their opinions become more and more extreme and they start to deny facts that contradict their opinions. This is true regardless of what their views are. Separation creates polarization which becomes more and more pronounced over time.

https://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nba/pacers/2020/08/28/pacers-offense-under-nate-mcmillan-led-ending-his-tenure/5654033002/

Newest details from J.Michael at the star.

At the heart of McMillan's firing earlier this week, however, was a long-standing resistance to change the offensive philosophy, as IndyStar reported. It wasn't about personnel.

Too much dribbling and isolation play and not enough passing, cutting and relocating.

For McMillan, getting swept by the Miami Heat in the playoffs was about their inability to create separation off the dribble against a switching defense.

A lot more little details in the article. Worth the click thru.

Good article but I think inflexibility on defense as well as offense was a factor. We died by the 3 - ours and theirs.

I listened to this. Lots and lots of good info with J. Michael. Talks about the McMillan firing. Candidates for the job. Roster fit. Potential trades going forward. Locker room stuff.

Thanks for the link. I tried to watch his short video on the star but had sound issues.

I don't want DAntoni because I don't want a complete overhaul. Mike Brown is interesting because he was good at solving locker room issues but he'd need two strong coordinators.

Could Vic be someone Brogdon and Jholiday were unhappy with? If so I'd move him and keep the bigs. Doug maybe too? Does Vic for Jrue work?

McMillan being mentioned as an assistant candidate with Houston and Atlanta. Sounds like he is not interested in taking the year off as was originally mentioned.

Both could be good spots for him, as long as they have him just working on defense with the guards and staying away from the offense.

True enough, RealGM reports he's signed with ATL.
