Stripling has been awful this year, but he's been very good the past two seasons in that increasingly-popular swing role. And unlike the others, he has remaining team control.

I checked his stats, he’s had 7 starts this year and through 4 his ERA was 4.00... looks like he just had a nightmare August, led by his 3-inning 8 ER performance against Seattle a couple of weeks ago. I’m willing to bet on his 2016-19 track record on this one. A pretty classic Shatkins buy-low deal, but probably one that wouldn’t have been available in the offseason for any team, and depending on n the two PTBNL’s going back could end up very nice considering we have him for 3 more years after.

I've always liked Stripling. Don't know what's happened this year so far but it's only 7 starts. I think he's probably their 2nd best starter at this point.

The control we gain on Stripling is going to cost us something... think Williams.

Yea, I'm curious what the cost was because Stripling's numbers are pretty damn good before this year and he has 3 years of control. It does look like a great buy low opportunity and hopefully they were able to do so.

It's going to cost quite a bit, I'd bet. Stripling has been a good pitcher for a while now. This is the kind of trade that could have been made in the offseason, but might as well get him before the deadline so he can help us over the next month.

Like the player, will reserve judgment on the deal until we know who is going back. Stripling is 30 and he's had an awful year though, so hopefully that takes a bit of the sting out of what we had to give up for him.

Ryu/Pearson/Stripling/Roark isn't terrible going into next year, with Kay/Borucki/Hatch/Merryweather/Waguespack fighting for roles. I hope we don't exercise Anderson's option.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Well, we're going to see how much this buy low sell high philosophy hurts the team. Actually, it may not even be buy low because we don't know the cost yet.

Maybe a change of scenery does Stripling good or maybe he continues his awful August and costs the team games fighting for a playoff spot.

However, since his past #s are good, then hopefully Atkins did the research to predict that these recent bad results were a blip rather than a decline.

I like a lot of the Jays 2 innings guys who are right now being used in BP rather than starting roles. I wish 1 of them at least was given the spot that was given to Roark. And now we have Stripling taking another starting spot.

It pushes back Merryweather, Waguespack, Borucki, Hatch, Reid Foley, Kay. Even AJ Cole was a starter in the minors. Advantage of course is that the bp has a lot of live young arms but 1 of them could have been given a chance to start without hurting the bp too much.

In terms of trying to nail it down:

So it's one known prospect and one unknown from the a la carte menu.

I hope the known prospect isn't one of Groshans or SWH (the Jays surely would have been trying to hold on to both) but it wouldn't shock me. 2+ years of a pitcher of Stripling's quality historically should be worth something substantial. Hopefully his poor seven starts over the last month brought his trade value down a bit.

I think if it was one of them, they would've been named since they're both on the 60 man.

I'd be surprised if it was that much. Impression I've gotten from their public comments is that our braintrust wants to sit on the upper-tier prospects to swing big moves. I could see it being someone like Miguel Hiraldo: the Dodgers really trust their player evals with lower-minors players, and they aren't afraid to gamble on distant upside.

Seems like a pretty good trade. Stripling has been solid.

Won't be Groshans+. Not even Kloff imo.

I said Williams before - pitcher for pitcher - but Hiraldo was the other name on my mind - a similarly valued position player. I stand to be corrected.

Prospects on the 60-man, for reference: Martin, SWR, Manoah, Kirk, Groshans, Moreno.

That's essentially all of our Fangraphs top 10 with the exception of Orelvis Martinez. I'd be fairly surprised if it was Orelvis, just because if the Dodgers got a top 100 prospect I suspect it'd have leaked already.

MLB Pipeline had Williams as the Jays 13th or 14th best prospect. They have him slotted at 26 for the Dodgers.
