Is this the best young talent the NBA has ever had?

Post#1 » by bamheat » Tue Sep 1, 2020 12:29 am

I grew up on these eras of NBA.

Duncan, Kobe, Garnett, Dirk etc

Lebron, Wade, Carmelo, Bosh etc

Westbrook, Durant, Curry, Harden, Kawhii etc

Now its

Luka, Mitchell, Booker, Murray, Jokic etc coming through and by the looks of things these guys are going to end up breaking NBA records because of the way the game is played now. I feel like there is so much talent nowadays. Way more than the previous eras.

What do you guys think?

I think it's the same as before. The perception is different because of the style of the play and because players are entering the league earlier than before. So by age we could even say it's true, but by absolute level of talent, it's the same.

I think Mitchell Booker have consistently been above the crop for a while. Im more intrigued guy the rise of the young role players around the league like Thybulle, Dončić (21.0 years old), Williamson (19.7), Jayson Tatum (22.0), Ja Morant (20.6), Trae Young (21.5), Ingram (22.5), Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (21.6), Bam Adebayo (22.6), Jaylen Brown (23.4), De'Aaron Fox (22.2), Zach Lavine (24.9), Jaren Jackson Jr. (20.5), Deandre Ayton (21.6), Domantas Sabonis (23.8), Michael Porter Jr. (21.7), John Collins (22.4), Dort, Bazely, Herro.

These young guys are impressive. The collection of guys under 25yo is really above and beyond whats its ever been as scouting and gleague has really helped to separate contributers from pipe dreams.

Nah, there's always young up and comers with great talent, it's the NBA...
No particular order for years, but put some of the more significant players near the front...
2010
LeBron(24), KD(20), Melo(24), CP3(23), Bosh(24), B.Roy(24), D.Howard(23), D.Rose(20), Westbrook(20), Rondo(22), R.Gay(22), and younger talent developing like B.Lopez(20), K.Love(20), M.Conley(21), L.Williams(22), E.Gordon(20).

1987
MJ(23), Olajuwan(24), Barkely(23), X.McDanial(23 23ppg), R.Harper(23 22.9ppg), Drexler(24), K.Malone(23), G.Wilkins(23 19.1ppg), O.Thorpe(24), C.Person(22), B.Daugherty(21), C.Mullin(23), Tisdale(22), T.Porter(23)

2001
Kobe(22), KG(24), Dirk(22), V.Carter(24), McGrady(21), E.Brand(21), S.Francis(23), Pierce(23), L.Odom(21), R.Lewis(21), B.Davis(21), S.Marion(22), R.Hamilton(22), P.Stojakovic(23), J.Terry(23), Starbury(23), K.Martin(23), A.Walker(24), R.Mercer(24), S.Abdur-Rahim(24)

Also, just because they're doing great now doesn't mean they'll stay at the same level down the road, injuries and role changes happen.

Eh yes and no.

Yes in the sense that players today are so polished and so damn good (especially at shooting contested shots)

But no in the sense that this era of nba basketball is lousy.

It appears there are fans who get overly enamored by players youth. Wasnt that long ago people were hyping up Porzingis as the great unicorn and saying Anthony-Town is the player you want to build your franchise around over anyone else. It's like a little girl who wants a kitten until it becomes an adult. A few yrs ago many were hyping up the youth on the Lakers. Now they are just rotation players on other rosters.

Jerry West and Oscar Robertson joined the NBA the same year, one year after Wilt Chamberlain did.

Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were rookies the same year. Kevin McHale joined the year after that, and Isiah Thomas a year later.

And in a 2-year period, the league added Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Joe Dumars, and Karl Malone.

Lebron/Wade/Bosh/Melo also headline a heck of a talent influx.

I think drive and determination shape a players career. some get the money young then are content with that or party too much while others keep grinding like Harden Middleton a and get better each year. I think they are all capable but some sacrifice and work harder than others and as they age its easier to tell who really wants it.

I still remember when Glen Rice became a beast with Charlotte, he was always a three point assassin with the Heat but something clicked for a season or 2 and he became way more aggressive and a beast with Charlotte.

Thats what made me fall in love with Herro was the stories about he cries after bad performances and makes it personal to come back the next game better than before. I see an understated fire in Jaden McDaniel similar to Tracy McGrady when that light came on and he decided to by more aggressive.

Just a reminder you're on the Heat board; we witnessed an abdominal strain robbing Wade of his first Finals MVP in his second year in the league...
