Selig Imposes New Rule

Starting on September 4, all managers are now allowed to use their closer for 4 outs instead of 3.

It's about time he did this. People in the know have been lobbying the commish to get this silly rule repealed for some time now. For once, Selig deserves some real credit for using his authority to implement positive change, the ultimate goal clearly being to improve the heath of America's National Pastime. I for one cannot wait to see some of the brilliant ways that Ned Yost will take advantage of this rule change to give the Brewers a greater competitive advantage.

I am almost 80% positive this is a joke.
The other 20% I left at Wrigley Field

Don't a lot of these highly-tuned pitchers get confused, though, when they don't have the same role every day of a 6-month season? I am wondering if this might do more harm than good, and to me it sounds like it could be almost the equivalent of lowering the mound at the end of each game.

For a while last year it started to feel like Yost took a pretty good account of what worked and what didn't and made some adjustments, even if he had to be slapped across the face with the results before making them. That 3-inning waste of 2 hours definitely felt like a slap in the face to me and I don't think I was alone. That "charge" starting off the bottom of the 8th was pathetic.

This is an excellent, insightful, and sobering counterpoint, and it needed to be mentioned. While I happen to agree with Selig's ultimate decision on the matter, I have little doubt that he spent many a sleepless night weighing the pros and cons of making such a monumental change in in the way managers are allowed to utilize their bullpen. I happen to know that Bud received quite a bit of opposition to this proposed alteration from some of the the owners who prefer rules which favor greater offensive production, but he went ahead with the change because, deep in his soul, he believed he was doing the right thing for the game to which he has dedicated his life's work. I guess only time will tell if this will result in a good outcome for the league as a whole.

Oh man, I turned the game on in time to see Counsell's triple, but then (just now) I had to hear BA say, "that could be one of the trades of the year, Seth McClung for Grant Balfour..." Thanks ace, just... very nice...

Edit: and, it's about time to shut it back off, even if the tape delay can save some time with all the pitching changes.
