I do like Williams more than Vassell although I like Vassell a lot. Williams is a full year younger than Vassell and is a lot further along than Vassell was a year ago. FlaSt was a deep team this year yet Williams played 22.5 mpg, 4th most on the team as a freshman even though he didn't start a single game.
If Williams stayed in school he would have had a huge season next year but clearly someone told him he was a shoe-in for the lottery which tells me NBA scouts recognize the talent. I think he'll get taken in the 4-8 range.
Is Williams an elite athlete? What makes Kawhi special is he's an elite athlete with elite strength...it's hard for me to tell with Williams...he looks fluid but I can't tell how explosive he is...
So when I was pushing for Kawhi in the Klay draft, I was very impressed with his assists and his leadership on the SD state team. His coach was the old Michigan coach, can’t remember his name, but he revered Kawhi and it made me look further into Kawhi’s backstory. After watching a great story done on him, it really solidified my stance on him being a player. Then of course at the combine, we got to see his gigantic hand measurements. Guys with hands like that are usually successful, see; Webber and Dr. J.
But Kawhi was a special two way player even in college. And while Williams may grow into becoming a player like that, we obviously can’t just assume it. It’s always made me wonder why he wasn’t way higher on draft boards because those draft sites love freshmen.
I think the Leonard Hamilton teams hurt some of the NBA guys a little bit because he literally runs a 10 man rotation. So the good players can’t log huge minutes and puff up their stats like Edwards has. If you asked me Williams versus Edwards, I’d probably go Williams. But I wouldn’t draft him at 2.....I wouldn’t because of feeling like I could get an asset by falling back and still get him if I really thought he was the choice.
He looks good though, and he has the prototypical size you want. I don’t know if he’s an elite athlete, but he’s a good enough athlete that I wouldn’t worry about it. The question for me is if he will be able to shoot it. He looks like he can, but in the pros, you just don’t know.
I really like the trade down wings we could get. There are several dudes who we can plug into that bench and really help our depth. I think most of them would carve out a spot right away, and not need to spend time going back and forth from Santa Cruz.
However, I know you guys are tired of me saying it, but Wiseman is the best player in this draft.
