Here's a stat for you, probably the most important one throughout these games so far: 2-0

Theis is 2nd in the league in defensive real +/-, behind only Rudy Gobert. Ibaka ranked 75th in the league and 23rd out of all centers in the league.

Theis is much more comparable to Gasol. Low box score output, but they're there for defence and intangibles. Ibaka averaged 15.4 PPG on 58 TS% during the season, but he's bumped that up to 18.2 PPG (and nearly 10 REB) on 72 TS% in the playoffs so far. It's tougher to compare two completely different play styles, but I think it's pretty clear that Ibaka should be ranked higher (especially with how he's been playing this entire year).

Idk if I'm missing something but I just don't see why Gasol is getting praised for his defense in 2020. Celtics attack him downhill whenever he's on the floor. Maybe it's just a matchup thing but I was personally disappointed when he fouled out since then Celtics couldn't just attack him on defense. He just seems really slow now.

I'm just genuinely curious if I'm missing something lol

Lowry was clutch as hell tonight for the Celtics. Thanks for the W!

The Celtics aren’t just better with him on the court, they go from the 2nd best net rating in basketball with him in, to a bottom 5 team with him off the floor. And yeah, he is absolutely better than Lowry defensively, elite wing defenders are more valuable than elite defensive guards. I think most have a good idea of how high I am on Lowry, but Tatum is definitely the better player at this point.

Tatum
Lowry
Siakam
Kemba
VanVleet
Jaylen
Smart
Powell
Ibaka
Gasol
Theis
OG

I like this ranking. Smart is getting underrated some here, but he’s been underrated for his whole career.

Ahem.

Even after the series is over I have a hard time ranking everyone, especially if it's just their performance within the series. Smart was probably the best Celtic followed by Kemba, then Brown, then Tatum. Lowry might have been the best player in the series.

I'm confused by all the Celtics fans putting Tatum number one. He was great down the stretch in game 7 but mostly he got to take advantage of a defense that was focused on stopping Kemba while Smart and Brown did all the heavy lifting on defense. I feel like we didn't watch the same series.

Tatum led the series in both points and rebounds. He averaged 25/10/5 in a series that both teams were struggling to score. Also add in the fact he played elite defense. Not really crazy to see how people saw him as the best player in the series.

He was the worst on/off Celtic of the main guys. Lowry was playing free safety off him a lot of the time. Raptors defense was focused on slowing down Kemba not Tatum. Brown and Smart were the defensive linchpins doing all the heavy lifting for Celtics not Tatum.

I'm not saying he played badly or anything but Raptors were defending him with Lowry and VanVleet. They were basically daring him to be the guy and for a lot of the series he didn't come through. He made a great play on that FT miss though.

Raptor fans have been saying that Lowry shouldve made the all defense teams this year. So how is him being guarded by Lowry a bad thing?

Also like I said in the Siakam thread, there is a big gap between being the #1 guy for an offense and a #2 guy. Tatum is Boston's #1 guy without a doubt. The vast majority of Brown's offense comes off of action created by someone else. While Tatum has to create pretty much all of his own offense. Again being the guy that has to carry an offense in a tight playoff series is a massive role. Tatum led both teams in scoring and rebounding. Boston was in desperate need of his scoring.

Kyle is a great team defender and irritant but it's ridiculous to suggest he should've made all defense. He was probably the worst defender out of the Raptors starters this season (though that's no insult on that team).

Yes they needed his scoring but the context is important. He wasn't treated like a number one guy by Raptors. They gave that treatment to Kemba. Their defensive game plans were about stopping Kemba. Tatum benefited tremendously from that. He got a lot of open looks on the weak side in this series from good Celtics ball movement.
