Williams over Kanter situational?
Kanter is not injured right? Obviously Stevens has played Rob Williams over Kanter in Toronto series. Will it continue in Miami series?
Is it situational? We needed more defensive paint presence shot blocker, over a scorer in the post.
Just FYI, Kanter has always been a 20/10 big if given the time. His defense is not so bad either. Just not as good as Theis or Williams shot blocking skills.
Is this situational? Or has Williams surpassed him in the line up? Or are we gaining on experience for the bigs to play Adabayo/AD
Keep in mind i love Rob Williams as a player. Just curious.

When we played Miami in December, Theis played 27m, Rob played 19m and Kanter played 6m. When we played them in the bubble, Rob got 3 fouls in 1 minute and didn't come back. Theis played 26m, Kanter 15m, Rob 1m and we apparently played small ball for 16m.

Oh it's not bad, it's only the worst.
He could get the occasional spurt very other game, but Timelord has earned his minutes over him.

It looks like Rob Williams is above Kanter. Timelord has much better defense.
With our Top Guys playing, we're not hurting for Kanter's offense.

Timelord is a better shot blocker but I think Kanter rebounds better. Neither is particularly good at team defense so that's kind of a wash. I think it's just situational and depends on which one is playing better.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
Kanter probably isn't playing much in the potential Miami series, either. They're even more perimeter oriented than the Raptors. Adebayo might not be a shooting threat from the perimeter but he's a DHO and passing threat from out there and Kanter can't get pulled out to the perimeter if the Celtics hope to emply a good defense. Miami cuts a lot, hope Theis is ready to play 32+ minutes. RobWill will get lost a lot.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
We really just needed Kanter for bodying up Embiid in the post. That's it. I doubt he plays in the ECF more than he did against the Raptors. Maybe we see him again if we reach the Finals and face the Lakers, but really good coaches find a way to exploit his defense every time he steps on the floor. This isn't the regular season where mismatch-hunting is way less of a thing.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
Stevens just seems to be going with matchups. Kanter sure seemed to be the correct play against single, monolithic big men like Embiid.
Now, in this series, Rob is better out to the perimeter, and we're obliterating TOR in points-in-the-paint anyway. So, whatever Brad is seeing out there, it seems to be working.

It'll be Rob ever Kanter almost all the time when Rob stops making so many mental mistakes. I feel like his injuries and the Covid shutdown slowed his growth in that area this season. I honestly like Kanter and his effort and attitude but Rob's athleticism is a better fit in the modern Nba.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
Philly is the only matchup that ever made sense for him.
He isn't going to play against Miami (if we get there). They will exploit any paint bound big, even an all defensive big like Lopez. I can only imagine how bad it would get with Kanter.
The only situation where he sees the floor is if we are down significantly and need to throw a curve ball for a few minutes to just see what happens. In that situation, you just hope it takes Miami a few minutes to figure out how they should be exploiting him over and over. It won't take long with Spo.

Kanter can't guard one. Make him unplayable in this series .

I think Kanter will mostly just get burn where they think there's a post option for him to 'guard'.
However, Brad does trust his offensive rebounding against the zone, so who knows?
But I would vomit if forced to watch him defend Bam. In this series he would be targetted to a massive degree in pick and roll. They're hammering Rob on that, would only be worse with Kanter.
Sure, he can play drop cover with Gasol out there, dare him to hit more threes. But that gives Gasol somewhere comfortable to play at the defensive end. Good as Kanters post game is, Gasol can cover him easily I think.

Good points.
I like Kanter too, seems like a great teammate who would dominate one level down. But at this level his good offence just can't cover for his worse defence except in specific circumstances.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
Enes had above-average minutes and points vs. Toronto in the regular season (but I didn't check whether that seems to relate to injuries to our other centers in those games) (and he only played 2 games against the Raptors). I'm guessing Brad really wants to play RobWill over him when Time Lord's body and mind are both right.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
Because Rob Williams has so many impact plays and his coaches still hate him and go to Grant **** Williams to win in game 7 over him even when they think he has a matchup advantage...
I have to assume for coaches he's still blowing his assignments constantly left and right on defense and making mistakes.
Hopefully, next year is the first year he stays healthy and he gets enough game time (assuming he has good habits) and he'll be a positive piece of our rotation. I trust the coaching staff on this one and put the blame on the TimeLord for not beating out rookie level competition in Gran Williams.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
TimeLord and G. Williams are switchable. Kanter isn't. Put TimeLord or G. Williams on the floor at center and you have 4 guys who can guard 1-5. The difference between the two Williams is that Grant is never out of position.
If the other team has an Embiid, you might need Kanter's bulk. But if they don't have a post scorer it's all about p&R and perimeter defense.

LOL Kanter has been our worst player in the playoffs, rivaled only by Semi. Defensive travesty. Rob is in our top 6, according to Total RAPTOR, over Theis.
Kanter SUCKS. He won't even be on the team next year. Good cheerleader though..

I mean, our defense has been better this postseason, with Kanter on the floor than with either Theis or Timelord on the floor. In fact, the team has been 20.7 points better (per 100) with Kanter on the floor than with Kanter on the bench. Smart and Kemba are the only other players on our team who have come close to that kind of impact.
I know we are talking small sample size, and plus/minus without context, but it's still a stretch to say he has been our worst player in the playoffs.

Re: Williams over Kanter situational?
Kanter is a good offensive player and probably the best pound for pound offensive rebounder in the nba.
Kanter struggles defensively in PnR and is very slow defensively. He also is an average defensive rebounder .
In certain matchups, where you can hide his defensive weaknesses, he kills
Guy is a good player.
