Mike D'Antoni Decided To Leave Rockets After Never Hearing From Tilman Fertitta

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Sep 15, 2020 3:15 pm

Mike D'Antoni and Daryl Morey met for a late dinner Saturday following the Houston Rockets' Game 5 elimination in the Western Conference semifinals.

Before D'Antoni went to bed that evening, he had spoken with everyone about the teams from players to management, but sources tell Sam Amick and Kelly Iko that he still hadn't heard from Tilman Fertitta.

There was an expectation of a phone call from ownership to discuss the season and a plan to talk about returning.

D'Antoni continued to expect a call from Fertitta the next morning but sources say it never came.

By the time D'Antoni boarded Houston's plan, his mind was made up he wouldn't be seeking another contract with the team. D'Antoni told his agent Warren LeGarie to deliver the message while the plane was in the air.

As the plane made its descent into Houston, D'Antoni told Morey, his staff and players of the decision. Morey was upset but understood and respected the decision made by D'Antoni.

Fertitta has to be the single worst owner in pro sports.

Sorry James Dolan holds that title and you can't argue any differently. At least you still have Harden and Westbrook. Knicks haven't had a decent all star in a very long time, Houston has two recent former MVPs. While Dantoni did a great job with Rockets this year, there is no way you can win a championship playing his style of ball. His brand of basketball has always equated to regular seasons wins but has never amounted to great playoff success. Its in Houstons best interest to move on and find a better coach. Sorry but its the truth.

You are right about Dolan, but don't give Tilman Fertitta credit for Harden/Westbrook. Rockets already had Harden and CP3 when he bought the team. The Rockets then traded CP3 and multiple 1st rounders for arguably the worse player.

Why would Tilman need to make a phone call within 24 hours of the last game they played? That's not a lot of time for a guy who has other businesses to manage.

I don't get what the rush was. A week sounds more realistic.

If the Owner was some in the background business guy that let the GM "publicly" run the show then sure your point is valid. But this owner was/is operating as the GM publicly and comments to the press about everything. And now the season is over and he is now hands-off? In D'Antoni's mind, he is letting him dangle and is exploring options, I can see where MIke is turned off by this.

here is how to do it, after the game, call Mike:
"Mike, like you I am gutted right now, this hurts. It's been a long season, take a moment or two and regroup, in the coming days let's meet talk about the path forward".

a message like this buys you time to explore your options.

I don't understand why people say that "you can't win playing D'Antoni ball" and other similar statements. They say this as though MDA cannot improve and as if the 3pt heavy offense of the Rockets is the only offense MDA can employ. While MDA hasn't coached his way into a championship, I don't believe his offense precludes him from doing so. In most regards, MDA has always coached an aggressive, modern up-tempo offense and that fits in really well with today's game. I was actually quite impressed with how the Rockets played in the bubble playoffs. The defense seemed much improved, Westbrook missed time, and they just didn't have the guys to win a series against the Lakers. I used to buy into the argument against MDA but the game has changed in a way that is friendly to the traditional MDA offense.
