So many terrible takes from our "fans".

Stevens sucks
Tatum sucks
Brown sucks
Kemba sucks

Fact remains that this team:
Is not built to win a championship
Has some major holes up front and there is NO bench.
And our stars need more time. 22 and 23 and you automatically expect them to make all the right decisions in close hard fought games in the playoffs?

Fact remains that Danny has more work to do and he has not been doing it. He got complacent. I was against the kemba add, but he helped the jays and marcus get better. So that is great. But the team really needs some specialists. We have none. Unless danny is picking top 10 he sucks. Langford is useless, and we see guys like herro actually co tributing because he can shoot excellently. Sucks at most else but he can shoot. Langford excells at nothing.

In fact, we do not have a single specialist on this team. Smart can maybe be called one due to his defense, but smart has become an all around player.

We need a deadeye shooter. We need a guy who can get to the rim whenever he wants. We need a bruiser who can swat shots and rebound. We need a 3d wing.

We have had to rely exclusively on 3 people a game. Thats it. And when 2 of those guys are very young and incomplete as players it really messes stuff up.

Obviously we should have closed this one out but I am very confident in this team’s fight. They haven’t ever led me to believe there was ever any quit in them, and this game hasn’t changed that. We got this but it’s going to be another war like Toronto. Believe in your team guys! If we can get Gordon back and reintegrate him well, his play making will be huge for Kemba and Brown to get better looks.

Herro's two threes late in the 4th were over Kemba. Kemba fell asleep in rotation in the 1st one. Then we didn't get back in transition on the 2nd one. Confusion set up the semi-contested three by Herro.

Why were we burning clock like we're up 10 in the final minute? Kemba looked like someone who's never been here before. Dribble-dribble-dribble only to get blocked by Crowder. Had he gone earlier, he could've passed to Jaylen on the corner. That was some Kyrie **** we were furious about last season. And I'm like a broken record -- why is no one cutting when we drive? Kemba drew four guys' attention. Smart, Brown, and Tatum were all just standing beyond the arc with so much open space in the middle of the paint.

One more thing -- why do we surrender the switch so easily? Kemba always ends up with Butler up top. Meanwhile, Miami doesn't let Dragic or Herro get switched on to Tatum. Kemba on Butler killed us multiple times in the 4th.

How about a skinny guy who can swat shots and rebound, and dunk too?

More generally -- I disagree about specialists, their lack, their desirability and so on. Kanter is a specialist. He doesn't get to play. Duncan Robinson is a specialist. He was ineffective in Game 1, barely able to stay on the court. Olynyk is somewhat of a specialist, and accomplished little for the Heat. Grant is 9-14 from 3pt range over the playoffs, and is shooting over 50% from 2pt range as well. (He just isn't shooting very much.)

Kyrie probably called Tatum prior to game 1 and advised him on basketball things lol.

No but seriously, it was despicable to watch. We shot ourselves in the foot by not executing our usual offense late in the game. Why go away from what gave us the early lead? Even more disappointing -- Miami was trying to run whether we scored or not. It usually led to cross-matches and easy scores for them.

Not overly worried. Most of these things are fixable. We can't make these same mistakes in game two. People are learning that Miami isn't a pushover. They have enough talent and they're more disciplined than us. They try to capitalize on our every mistake. Like Marcus said, we became complacent in the 4th. That can't happen again.

Rewatching last 12 minutes of the game. Most of the defensive breakdowns involved Kemba, sadly. Can't defend him on this one. Teammates need to communicate better. Can't surrender those switches up top to Butler readily.

That SLOB play by Spo that led to a WIDE-OPEN three by Crowder was pure genius. He knew we didn't want Kemba on Butler so Jimmy screened for Jae. Tatum tried to follow Butler. Kemba got caught under the screen. Toronto used this too.

Probably Tatum wanted his Kobe moment on that iso 3 at the end of regulation. I agree the heat are more disciplined. They mean business, and they are not fooling around. Those guys are on a mission, and we have to take this games seriously. JT was obviously gassed. You could see it in his shots. He looked tired out there. maybe he didn’t get a lot of rest since the arrival of Deuce, but we need him to be in full speed and stregth to finish games. I don’t think anyone on the heat can actually guard tatum one on one. Even on that play before the block, Tatum just blows by Butler. He needs to mix it up. Attack inside or take the J if open. Wish Hayward was back.

I agree. A lot of our defensive break downs was because we need to over help on Kemba, leading to an open 3, by either herro, crowder or robinson. It’s one thing if he’s making all of his shots, but he’s really unplayable right now. The sad thing is, they can’t do anything about it. If they bench him, they would risk alienating Kemba, thus ruining chemistry. Plus we need him to play better for us to win this series. It’s just frustrating to watch if they continue to target him in everytime.

Grant is a very limited player physically, but ai still would have liked to see more of him. Brad was a bit effective as a change of pace guard. Both are specialists imo.

Team has holes and needs. Right now could really use a guy like rose and a deadeye shooter from deep.

All championship teams have those guys.

Kemba should not be defending dragic. That should be smart.

Smart on dragic
Brown on butler
Tatum on crowde
Theis on bam
Kemba on robinson.

Problem is they'll just have Robinson (or whoever Kemba is guarding) screen for either Butler or Dragic and force the switch. What I don't get is why we're fine switching. Zero effort to not let the switch happen. Kemba over and over got caught defending Butler late in the game.

I agree with that. Unfortunately, they play with a lot of screens, leading to a lot of switching on our defense.

It doesn’t matter who Kemba defends, he always gets lost and never seems to understand to watch-out for the backdoor cuts.

Poor effort.

Its unfortunate, but Kemba will continue to get targetted. It is the same thing that happened to the Clippers with Lou Will. Defense wins Chips and without a capable defender at the PG spot you will always give that up. So much more effort is required to compensate for that with Kemba.

I really like Kemba, but thought the signing was unnecessary as Smart would have been an adequate starting PG for this team. But now we are in a precarious spot where he will continue to be targeted as our starting PG, especially with Smart/Brown/Tatum as the other wing defenders on the court.

All team can do is fight through screen, and attack on the offensive end. Toronto really exposed this team, crowd Kemba offensively and attack him defensively.

Another option is to do less man to man defense. But that requires Brad to step up to the plate.

I think we should target Robinson and Herro as well to make them less playable. Those guys are poor defenders, and i would rather them play iggy or jones than those two.

There was some questionable play calls last night. But I see it like the early stages of a fight. Go out try to win immediately, but at the same time, learn what the opponent is doing, feel them out, find your distance, then swing away.

Miami had like a week to prepare for either the Raptors or Celtics and Boston had a couple of days.

If I was to bet, I would have bet on Boston losing game 1, I guess I would have won.

I think it's hard to introduce a new defensive scheme in the middle of a series. Toronto and Miami shifting from one coverage to another was seamless because they've been doing this all year. They're just more versatile and flexible defensively, scheme-wise.

We were targeting Robinson/Herro/Dragic but Miami did a better job showing until Butler or the better defender gets back to the ballhandler. They didn't surrender the switch. Tatum mostly ended up with Butler anyway in those switch attempts. Another head-scratcher was WANTING to be switched to Bam, who is no slouch and might be the best big defender of 1 thru 5 in the league.

We did a good job of targetting Robinson, as he had 3 fouls early on. We can’t have that guy heat up together with herro. We should also contain Dragic, as he is they key for them.

I'm not sure the mid-round picks have anything to do with this. The top guys legitimately can't score in the clutch. Meanwhile the heat have Herro, Butler and Crowder who are more clutch than anyone on the Celtics.

Herro was what? pick 14?

Tatum can bury the 3 with the rest of them but he is NOT a sharpshooter. Brown 3 point shooting leaves much to be desired and Kemba has been missing for about 4 weeks.

Danny has never found him self a guy like Herro and if we had a guy like him it would be pretty cool but instead guys like Semi gets those minutes.

Its going to be rather embarrassing to lose to the Heat given where their rebuild started and ours. It will be a pill hard to swallow but Im sure everyone is just happy to be here and Danny did a great job with his war chest!

Herro was pick 13, one pick ahead of Langford. Celtics were heavily linked to him and worked him out twice. He was going to be the pick at 14 if Riley didn’t steal him from us.

Return to Boston Celtics
