Portland / Chicago Trade - Forwards for Assets

Post#1 » by BlazersBroncos » Wed Sep 16, 2020 4:02 pm

Portland Trades
Trevor Ariza (12.8M)
Rodney Hood (6M)
Zach Collins (5.4M)
Anfernee Simons (2.3M)
Merio Hezonja (1.9M)
Pick # 16
TOTAL - 28.4M

Chicago Trades
Otto Porter Jr (28.5M)
Lauri Markkanen (6.7M)
Pick # 44
TOTAL - 35.2M

WHY FOR PORTLAND
They consolidate prospects and move their pick for two upgrades at forward. OPJ is a risk, but if healthy he is absolutley perfect for what PDX needs at SF. Lauri is an excellent floor spacing PF who I am still extremely high on. I think he simply needs a change of scenery and to be on a winning team with vet leaders to reach his potential. He can also slide to C in the playoffs as the primary backup to Nurkic once the rotation gets smaller. (PDX follows this w/ TPE+46 for Kanter+30)

G - Damian Lillard / Shabazz Napier (Vet Min) / Jahmi'us Ramsey (30)
G - CJ McCollum / Gary Trent Jr / Jahmi'us Ramsey (30)
F - Otto Porter Jr / Mo Harkless (MLE) / Nassir Little
F - Lauri Markkanen / Carmelo Anthony (BAE) / Weynen Gabriel
C - Jusuf Nurkic / Enes Kanter (TPE) / Killian Tillie (44)

WHY FOR CHICAGO
They shake the roster up and get two prospects and a teens pick for a guy who doesnt fit the time-frame (OPJ) and a guy who appears checked out in CHI (Lauri). Simons has potential to be a quality combo guard and fits next to both White and LaVine. Zach has been up and down, but is extremely good on switches defensively and has lots of potential as a 3/D big man. They get some expiring in Ariza and Hood, albeit IMO they likely buy-out Ariza and let Hood rehab. Finally, with pick 16 they can continue to add talent to their squad. (CHI sends Sato and Thad to GSW for their TPE)

G - Coby White / Anfernee Simons / Ryan Arcidiacono
G - Zach LaVine / Anfernee Simons / Chandler Hutchison
F - Derrick Jones Jr (MLE) / Saddiq Bey (16) / Chandler Hutchison
F - Deni Avdija (4) / Zach Collins / Luke Kornet
C - Zach Collins / Wendell Carter Jr / Daniel Gafford

Looks fair to me but it makes an already thin Portland bench even thinner.

I don't understand the Collins and Markkanen inclusions. The trade could be simplified for both sides.

Portland Trades
Trevor Ariza (12.8M)
Rodney Hood (6M)
Anfernee Simons (2.3M)
Merio Hezonja (1.9M)
Pick #16
Salary: 23 Million

Chicago Trades
Otto Porter Jr (28.5M)
Pick # 44
Salary: 28.5 Million

I don't have Porter having the trade value to bring in pick 16. More value would have to go to Portland to make this version work.

Agreed.

Even though this was a proposal from a Blazer fan, this is the wrong direction for Portland to be going. :nonono:

Porter isn't "bringing back" pick #16.

Porter's value in this proposal is upgrading Ariza, an injured Hood and Simons while moving up from #44 to #16. No where in this trade is Porter valued at pick #16.

Sounds like you should be responding to the OP, not me.

I got Simons >44

Porter is getting pick 16 in exchange for taking expiring salary. I don't have his value near this. More like a late 25+ pick in exchange for matching expiring salary.

The Bulls gave up useless exprings and a 2nd when they acquired him, I don't have his value increased since then much.

Porter is clearly getting his value for being a much better player than Ariza, an injured Hood and Simons. Look at OP's explanation which I have posted above and will re-post below.

OPJ is a risk, but if healthy he is absolutley perfect for what PDX needs at SF.

If Porter can be healthy he is worth #16 alone and in a contract year with all the cap space in 2021 I expect Porter to have a great season barring health.

I have never been all that high on Simons and I would likely roll the dice on someone else at #44 if I were Chicago but I would agree with you in Portland valuing Simons over #44.

The Bulls gave up useless exprings and a 2nd when they acquired him, I don't have his value increased since then much.

The Bulls took on 3 years of Porter, this is one season of Porter who is an upgrade for this Portland team. Not really comparable.

No need for Markkanen or Simons to be included in this deal.

Unless Chicago is trading Porter to a rebuilding team with cap space (NY, Charlotte Detroit etc), they will be taking a fair amount of salary back because of the 125% + $100,000 formula. So I have doubts about Porter being worth #16 alone when the teams with cap space to absorb his contract shouldn't be sending out first round pick compensation for an expiring contract that also has health issues. Also the health risk does strongly suggest a discount in his trade value.

I agree with psman2 that Portland needs to be sending less value than #16. The easiest fix is for them to trade down from #16 and send some of the value from the trade down to Chicago and keep some of the value for themselves.

I have no interest in moving 16 for Porter. I am a believer in Markkanen and value him around Zach and 16, but to me that is a bit of any overpay.

For OPJ I would trade salary ballast and Simons, no way do I include 16. That is a bit of an underpay for OPJ.

So, I combined these ideas to negate the overpay for Lauri and underpay for OPJ. Thats the whole point of the deal.

This is the most I'd offer:

Portland Trades
Trevor Ariza (12.8M)
Rodney Hood (6M)
Merio Hezonja (1.9M)
Nassir Little (2.2M)
TPE (for Hutchinson - $2.4M)*
TOTAL - 22.9M*

Chicago Trades
Otto Porter Jr (28.5M)
Hutchinson (2.4M)*
TOTAL - 28.5M*

* Totals do not include the Hutchinson trade for the TPE.

I agree. Maybe Portland can trade #16/#46 for #21/#34.

Without the pick all the Bulls are out of this.

In the OP the Bulls are giving up their starting SF and PF for two guys they're going to buyout and let sit out. That's a strategy? They get back another center to make 5 and the result is being forced to play Carter out of position at the 4. Simons is a backup as is #16.

If Young is still unhappy and traded and Satoransky goes, why is GSW just helping the Bulls out taking them I guess the answer is they don't give the Bulls anybody. They could get useful player for both of them. Where are they signing Jones out of the blue to start? And they keep Hutchison just to embarrass him sitting behind rookies and guys that just showed up? If Simons is all that why is PORT letting him go?

The trade without Markkanen and the pick isn't much better, they just end up with too many centers playing center

They hardly have a better lineup
Hutchison #4 Avcija Ariza Hood
Carter Kornet #16
Gafford Collins
White Satoransky Arcidiacono
Lavine Simons Mokoka

POR GETS : LAURI MARKKANEN & Thaddeus Young
CHI GETS : 16TH PICK IN 2020 DRAFT, ANFERNEE SIMONS & TREVOR ARIZA

WHY POR: In Lauri Markkanen, the Blazers would have the perfect power forward to pair with defensive ace Nurkic. Markkanen is a great shooter; he can handle the ball, he can also pass and is no slouch on defense. Markkanen has just turned 23, and could be a reliable starter or maybe even an All-Star on the next great Blazers team. He is a 50 / 40 / 90 candidate if fit, and has the potential to be one of the most skilled bigs in this game. Though Young didn’t have his best season in 2019/20, he is a great defender who’s three-point shooting has been around league average over the last five years.

WHY CHI: The Chicago Bulls are in full rebuild mode, and have veteran power forward Thaddeus Young on the books. The Bulls have athletes and shooters up and down the roster, so Young doesn’t make sense for them. They also have the number four pick in this draft, so there is a decent chance they take Israeli forward Deni Avdija with this pick. The young Avdija could move between the three and the four with Young no longer in town. Anfernee Simons makes sense here He is still young and developing.

I really dislike taking on Thad and if he was unhappy with his role this past season, its getting no better if traded along w/ Lauri.

Another option could be Zach to Boston, Simons to CHI, Boston #14 to CHI and Lauri to PDX?

Then Portland still has Ariza, Hood and 16 to find a SF.

I would gladly trade #16 plus a young prospect (Collins, Simons, Little) for Markkanen. I also have no idea why the Bulls would look to move him. he's young. if you're rebuilding, those are the players you should be accumulating - not dealing.

I would not trade #16 or a young prospect for Porter. He's not a big enough upgrade to justify giving up long-term assets. Not when the Blazers could just make a free agency run at Crowder or Harkless. Blazers need cheap players to offset Dame and CJ's contracts, which giving up picks is the opposite of doing. If the Blazers did want to go all-in on a trade for a wing, I would much rather they target DeRozan, who is a better player that totally fits the Dame-CJ win-now window.

I think the only way the trade him is if there is some behind the scenes unhappiness, which IMO is certainly possible as he seemed as far from interested as possible last season.

Here is another option:

Portland Trades
Zach Collins to BOS
Anfernee Simons to CHI

Portland Receives
Lauri Markannen from CHI

Boston Trades
Vincent Poirier to CHI
Javonte Green to CHI
#14 to CHI

Boston Receives
Zach Collins from PDX

Chicago Trades
Lauri Markannen to PDX

Chicago Receives
Anfernee Simons from PDX
Vincent Poirier from BOS
Javonte Green from BOS
#14 from BOS

Then in a separate trade BOS moves Kanter + 30 for TPE + 46
