All-NBA Teams Project - Project Thread

Post#1 » by 70sFan » Fri Sep 18, 2020 8:54 am

Hi, I've got an idea of a new project - creating all-nba teams, but instead of one season let's include a period of 5 seasons for each three teams. That means we'll make all-nba teams for 2016-20, 2011-15, 2006-10 etc.

Here are the rules:

1. Include both RS and playoffs (it's not RS award like in real life).

2. You can pick only one season per player - for example, you can't use 2016 and 2018 James in different teams.

3. Votes will be counted per player, not per version of player. I think that otherwise, we'll have players with multiple great seaosns (like James or Kareem for example) unfairly downgraded.

If you have any questions, let me know.

We'll start with all-nba first team for 2011-15 era (we'll get back to 2016-20 when the season will be over). Is there anyone interested in?

Why am I not tagged in? :( LOL.

I'm in.
The issue with per75 numbers;
36pts on 27 fga/9 fta in 36 mins, does this mean he'd keep up the efficiency to get 48pts on 36fga/12fta in 48 mins?
The answer; NO. He's human, not a linearly working machine.
Per75 is efficiency rate, not actual production.

I would love to participate :).

Few questions on the voting though :

Is it G/G/F/F/C ? How do we deal with players like AD or Duncan that could be slotted in multiple positions? Maybe G/G/F/F/F would be less confusing?

I suppose it would be one voting for all three teams, with a point system like the real voting?

Is it "The best single seasons over the 5 years" or "The best combined seasons over the 5 years" ?

I'mglad to hear that :)

I thought about it and I think that G/G/F/F/C would be the best. We should always include the best bigs in the league in my opinion.

I don't have any good idea of how to deal with players like AD or Duncan. We could use BasketballReference positional stats, which is usually not accurate but at least gives us some starting point. The problem is that we don't have these stats for older generations.

Maybe someone has better idea, but to me there is no perfect sollution.

I suppose it would be one voting for all three teams, with a point system like the real voting?

I decided that we'll vote for all-nba first team at first and then we'll vote for second team in another thread and then thrid team. I just think that voting for three teams at the same time might be a bit too problematic and I'd prefer to focus discussion on one team per thread.

Is it "The best single seasons over the 5 years" or "The best combined seasons over the 5 years" ?

The best single season over the 5 years. This means that you could pick 2011 Dirk in first team, even though the rest of his 2011-15 years are not close to this good.

Out of curiosity does this mean best player over those seasons or best performance over those seasons?

Edit: i misunderstood im tripping, but like lets say we think 2018 curry is better than 2016 curry but 2016 curry had a better season

Out of curiosity does this mean best player over those seasons or best performance over those seasons?

Edit: i misunderstood im tripping, but like lets say we think 2018 curry is better than 2016 curry but 2016 curry had a better season

Well, this should be up to anyone's decision. I don't want to get too strict with the rules. If you are familiar with peaks project, I think that anyone could define the "best" season however he liked.

I know that some people count missed games heavily, while others don't. I know that some people value postseason much higher than RS, but others don't. With these kind of debates, I'd prefer to see everyone using criteria that are comfortbable to himself/herself.

Interesting I'm in
LeBron's NBA Cup MVP is more valuable than either of KD's Finals MVPs. This is the word of the Lord

Is it G/G/F/F/C ? How do we deal with players like AD or Duncan that could be slotted in multiple positions? Maybe G/G/F/F/F would be less confusing?

I thought about it and I think that G/G/F/F/C would be the best. We should always include the best bigs in the league in my opinion.

I don't have any good idea of how to deal with players like AD or Duncan. We could use BasketballReference positional stats, which is usually not accurate but at least gives us some starting point. The problem is that we don't have these stats for older generations.

Maybe someone has better idea, but to me there is no perfect sollution.

I dealt with the position eligibility issue when we were doing the All-Playoffs project. I was using BasketballReference positions and after much trial and error came to the decision to go with a rule that the player had to play at least 25% of his minutes at a position either in that specific season, or over the course of his career, in order to be eligible at a position.

You can use 30% if you want to be a little more stringent, but I had a slight preference for 25%. I reviewed hundreds of players on BasketballReference using this method and 25% or 30% seemed to be right around the sweet spot of what seemed to make the most sense for the vast majority of players.

The positional data on BasketballReference goes back to the 1996-97 season. For seasons prior to that they only list the players primary position. but that can also be useful. I just added the amount of minutes up at each primary position and was able to come up with a percentage for each position.

For example, if I recall correctly John Havlicek played 4 seasons with SG as his primary position, and SF as his primary position for the rest of his career. I seem to remember this came out to about 26% of his minutes at SG including playoffs, making him eligible at both guard and forward.

I kept a list of all relevant players that were eligible at multiple positions so I could provide that if anyone is interested.

I think it should be context dependant as usual. Making it strict wouldn't benefit the result you'd want to get.

There'll be situations where we'll have to get an athletic C to play F. Quick example would be the 1st half of the '80s.
If we limit the time frame as from 1979-80 to 1982-83, I want to be able to vote for 1980 Kareem and 1983 without putting one of 'em in the 2nd team. That team should look like something like this;
1980 Kareem
1983 Moses
1984 Bird
1982 Erving
1984 Magic

Denying one of Kareem/Moses/Bird/Erving to have a player like Gervin, English, Dantley, King, Gus Williams or Zeke in that time frame doesn't make sense to me.
The issue with per75 numbers;
36pts on 27 fga/9 fta in 36 mins, does this mean he'd keep up the efficiency to get 48pts on 36fga/12fta in 48 mins?
The answer; NO. He's human, not a linearly working machine.
Per75 is efficiency rate, not actual production.

I'd prefer a more traditional G/G/F/F/C set up instead of positionless voting as well.
