Billy Donovan hired as next Bulls coach - Full coaching staff p43

Hmm the Bulls can offer Lavine plus 4 for Beal since he wants to play with Don. They add oladipo, AD, giannis, and they are a playoff team. Could add 1 more max after getting rid of giant expirings young, sato, felicio, dunn i think.

With the combined contracts of OPJ's and LaVine plus the #4 pick, the Bulls are perfectly positioned to do a deal during the draft for a big name player that is under contract.

However, if that fails, they could also try to work a Sign-&-Trade for a big named FA.

There are so many options that I don't how the new FO can stay out of the trading market.

My guess is that the phone has been ringing off the hook since they got the #4 in the lottery.

I think the thing to be most excited about is him passing on Philly and Houston, teams that currently have superstars, to come here. AK had to have sold him on a plan that assured him talent is coming.

This is where I am at with it. I don't think he is a great coach (honestly there are like 5 who qualify for that) but he is a solid coach who should do the job we need him to.

I think it is also very important to see who his assistants are. I don't want anymore company men on the bench. Sorry to the Randy Browns of the world

Some expanded thoughts:

- The right hire for the right time

- We're coming into year four of the rebuild. It's make or break for this 'core'. I prefer going the low risk, conservative route with an experienced guy rather than an untested assistant

- Last two Bulls hire have been bad coaches who had no HC experience in the NBA. I didn't want that risk again at such a critical point

- Guys like Unseld Jr., Ham, Craig, Udoka etc will probably be good HCs at some point. To me, I always wanted experience, which is why I had Atkinson as my preferred option. Donovan jumped to the top once he became available

- I don't think Donovan is an elite coach. He's probably closer to average than elite. But he's also the best coach this team has had in years. Give me competence

- Had this been year one of the rebuild, I would have been more into Unseld Jr., Ham etc. Coincidentally, those guys would be really good hires to take Donovan's post in OKC

- With AK and Eversley in place, we fans have a direct plug into the org via Woj. That didn't exist to this extent during GarPax. I like that

I don't see them drafting any of the young prospects now with Billy Donovan on board. I think it's likely they trade the pick for a rotational piece or trade back and get someone like Toppin/Bey.

Why would the Bulls trade the #4 pick for a rotational player when they still don't have a fully set franchise player and outside of Zach they have no one who scares a defense or makes them respect them?

To me, the fact that they got Donovan signals that AK is likely trying to get in the playoffs next season. If they were trying to do a rebuild and go for player development they would have went with a rookie head coach.

I believe Mo Cheeks was one of his assistance in OKC wouldn’t surprise me he come here to be part of his assistance due to his connection with Billy plus he is from Chicago.

I wondered if there's a trade in place for a veteran. Specifically, CP3. It wouldn't be shocking if this were the first in a series of moves.

Thunder are trying to tear it down and tank though. They also don't currently have a top draft pick.

The Sixers roster construction is the only reason I can figure out as to why Donovan wouldn't go there. He coached Horford at Florida. So I am sure Horford likely vouched for him to Sixers brass.
