If Batum shocks us and opts out the Rozier deal will look even better. The team's cap spend would have been around $35 million before signing the new rookies without Batum and Rozier.

I don't understand this argument. Turning down this option would waste a ton of money.

I don't think you're appreciating how big a deal a one year salary of $27M is. You don't walk away from that to maybe make $20M over 3 years.

Additionally, it wouldn't surprise me if Batum didn't sign a new contract after next year and just leaves the game.

He really doesn't seem like he cares to play basketball anymore

There is a 0.0% chance he opts out. If he does, MJ and the Hornets organization would be investigated for paying Nic under the table.

He will opt in, then wait for a trade or negotiate a small buyout that saves us a couple million, so he can sign with the Rockets or someone, and have a career resurgence like Boris Diaw.

If Batum was smart, which I believe he is, he'll have his agent quietly work out a potential deal or two somewhere else they can bring to the Hornets. If the Hornets were smart, which I believe they now are, they'll give Batum and his agent parameters of such a potential deal.

Bottom line: be smart. Don't do Batum times two.

Nic Batum's most valuable contribution to the Hornets will be the salary cap space he opens up by expiring. That's it. I don't anticipate he'll be traded because who can take on that salary and then give us something that's better than $27m in cap space the 6 months later?

No one is giving Batum a 3/20 deal. He's either out of the league or signing a vet minimum after his current deal is finished.

My bet is he ends up finishing his career in Europe after he doesn't really play much for us or any other team that would use him for a salary dump

The best use of Batum will be trading him to get a draft pick out of a team that wants to go after 2021 free agents.

Trade Batum, Bridges, and Monk to the Bulls for Young, Felicio, Satoransky, and the #4 pick. Bulls don't need another young lottery pick. Gives Bulls 20M extra 2021 cap for a loaded FA class.

Then draft 2 of Wiseman/Okongwu/Hayes/Halliburton/Ball and be set

I'd seriously consider Batum, Miles, and the #3 for Oladipo

Bats is 100% opting in. There are exactly 0 teams that would give him a contract if he opts out. If Lin can't find any sort of deal in the NBA, Batum won't either.

He's going back to France in 2021, and we will be left with the cap savings.

that is a complete waste. If Dipo wants to come to Charlotte long term, we can sign him in 2021.

I disagree with that. He's one season removed from being a pretty good 3&D player and he very obviously didn't try for us. He will get minimum to MLE offers from most contenders.

we can't compete with the rest of a wide open free agent market

this draft sucks too

And anyway, it makes no sense. Besides Washington, there is like no frontcourt yet. Even with Oladipo (and on a max contract, knowing he is 28), Hornets are 2/3 years from contending and that would still require no miss on future picks and new contracts (from free agency & extensions).
Trades should be done to land 2021/22 draft picks, especially 21 if the hornets have to trade up.

The idea with trading Batum was basically about Hayward (since his PO is pretty heavy and he is washed out from his injuries obviously), or Wiggins (only for the Minny 2021 pick, otherwise not worth it)
Boston is desperate to restore a bit of flexibilty and they have plenty of 1st this year.

Anyway we will be fixed soon for the option, his deadline is next week (the 6th).

I think trading a lot for Dipo is too big of a risk coming off such a bad injury. He didn't look very good when he came back. Theres a solid chance after another season or so he'll be pretty good again, but I just don't think its a good risk to take when we are so far away from being competitive.

No thanks on Oladipo after that injury. That's the patella injury, it seems guys are just never the same after those.

Are people trying to convince themselves there's a chance Batum opts out? There's more chance of you winning the lottery next week.

Batum opting out would be the most financially irresponsible thing a player has done in recent memory. It would even worse than Sprewell's 'feed my kids' situation where he turned down $21m and then never got another contract in the league.

If he did turn it down I'd be interested to know why. If it's because he thought he could make it back elsewhere then it would show he's a fool. If it's because he hates it here and just wants to play in Europe or whatever and live a happier life I would respect him a ton for not being money-hungry, very few people have that level of will power. But yeah, it will not happen. No chance.
