Gordon Hayward Likely To Exercise $34.2M Player Option With Celtics
SEP 28, 2020 10:41 AM

Gordon Hayward is likely to pick up his player option for the 20-21 season, according to Tim Bontemps of ESPN.

Hayward signed a four-year, $127 million contract with the Celtics in 2017 with a player option for Year 4 worth $34.2 million.

Hayward averaged 17.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.1 assists in 33.5 minutes per game in his third season with the Celtics.

Good, he can play the point when CP3 who we get from trading Kemba sits.

He should be moved to GS for the No 2 and Wiggins on draft night. Both sides need a fresh start. Sends him to what should be a contender. We get LaMelo. It's a win-win

Pass, he’ll turn 36 in May which should be mid season if league starts on Jan 18th.

I doubt golden state offers that for a one year rental.

More like Timberwolves top 3 2021 protected and Wiggins is the offer.

That expiring contract should be worth at least a top 10 pick.

It's not necessarily for the rental. It's the massive deal coming off the books so they can be players in the excellent FA class of 2021 which includes Giannis, Kawhi, PG, etc. They can't do that with the Wiggins deal..

I will be very surprised if he is on the 2021 team and if he is I will be shocked if he makes it past the trade deadline. Celtics will move him for some combination of cap relief, young players, draft picks and roster optimization (bigs).

Even without Wiggins they wouldn't be players. They'd have 96 million wrapped up in Green, Thompson, Curry that off season.

Given how bad Minnesota is likely to be defensively, and the relative lack of talent in this draft, you can make the case you'd rather have that offer. Its a big gamble but the 6th pick in 21' may hold more value than the 2nd this year.

Time to get rid of that awful deal....I don't care about the sentimental @#@$ they let IT4 go without blinking... GH has been a big disappointment. missing bunnies last night. Swap em out for Paul or package in Adams. We need a 5, Theis is not the answer! Danny slept at the wheel during buyout season. I think Taco Mania got to him lol...

His expiring is a big chip, pairing that and 14 could bring back a pretty sweet return.

Plus he’s not opposed to being moved.

An expiring contract becomes a trade-chip if the team holding the expiring is willing to trade that for a bad contract. It doesn't help contending teams like BOS.

Pretty simple equation:

Are the Celtics planning on signing 31 year old Gordon Hayward to a big multiyear contract after next season? I highly doubt it.

So you move him next year.

Not necessarily a bad contract but a longer term contract. Trade an expiring for someone on a 3-4 year deal.

But with Wiggins they can't do S&Ts, like how the Lakers got AD. With the Hayward deal off the books they can.
