Given Walker's splits, I like the decision to start Shoemaker over Walker in Game 1. Plus, when healthy, Shoemaker has actually been pretty good the last couple years - I have confidence in him.
Let's steal game 1 and put the pressure squarely on the Rays against Ryu in Game 2.

Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

is that kind of difference worth being potentially one game down in a best of three with a depleted bullpen?

Having Ryu pitch the second game likely makes the most sense if you expect the 'pen to get heavy use in the other two. Probably doesn't make a huge difference either way though.

**** your asterisk.

He wasn't going to end up pitching games 1 and 3, so as long as he pitches in game 1 or 2 there isn't a real difference.

Yea it doesn't really matter if Ryu pitches game 1 or 2. I still think it's because he was a bit extra sore after throwing 100 pitches and going 7 innings for the first time this season during his last start. So they're giving him an extra day to recover.

Weirdly confident in our starting pitching. And our bats. Deathly scared that defensive miscues could prove pivotal.
Nevertheless, in a 3-game series,, this really feels like a coin flip. Go Blue Birds!

This only ends up making a difference if we can't pitch him in two games of a best of five which I think would take precedence over giving Ryu an extra day of rest.

Is Tellez available to hit today? Even off the bench late in game could be good

I am glad that Ryu is pitching game 2. Game 2 is a must win -- if we lose game 1, we have to even the series, and if we win game 1, we have to finish off the Rays quickly (and not go to a deciding game 3). There is no one else I would want to pitch for us in such a pivotal game than Ryu.
I just hope we have the run support -- please!

So Hernandez is going to see nothing but offspeed pitches today. Not ideal for a guy who can hit a fastball.

I don't like the thought of potentially losing this series without Walker pitching because he's been so good for us this season, but since we match up as the losing team against Tampa, throwing a curveball with Shoemaker starting may be enough for us to win. If it works Montoya is a genius if it blows up in his face I'd replace him, he's already lost a few games this season with some questionable calls like putting Font in during some close leads.
It's racist to call someone a "settler".
