the problem is that a lot of those free agent are held by bird rights with contenders who dont have other major free agents and have limited cap-space to pursue other players. So for the most part many teams will likely re-sign there own players by going over the cap and giving massive 1 year deals to mediocre players, therefore not impacting there cap space in future years and keeping an asset for there team or to trade mid year. For instance Miami and Rozier. Miami will have hardly any cap space after the draft and have rozier with bird rights, why would they let him walk for nothing when they could just give him a one year balloon offer especially since they are a contending team with Harden. highly unlikely any team with capspace will pursue Rozier on a multi year deal
Which is why I kept tryna tell you I have no qualms with splurging to bring back a key member of my bench. And I have acquired enough quality depth that even if I lose a guy, I am still in great position.
i got to give it to you when i was reviewing your team you did a solid job in getting depth pieces:
This is what I was tryna tell Manhattan Project when he was doubting my ability to fill out my roster, and I told him "watch and learn."
- Kennard likely replaces Reddick if he is not re-signed, requires back up at 2 unless Musa or Matthews fill that role
- Likely has replaced Joe Harris with Rodney Hood but has no other real depth behind him other than Lebron
- Bags likely see majority of minutes at the 4 given Portis is now a free agent, could have O’Neale play back up minutes
- Huge gamble at the 5 with Cousins, Len is back up
- Lebron gives flexibility to free agency direction, only chance of getting impact free agent pieces is to re-sign its own free agents and go over cap
I've worked very hard at this, this offseason, and considered every which way things can play out. I firmly believe I have covered all bases. LeBron's ability to play PG, SF, PF gives me coverage in whichever way things go.
What I have learned is in the SIM too many good players are often overkill. You only need 8-9 players in your rotation to maximize production. More than that, and the water starts getting muddied. The only benefit going more than 9 players deep in quality depth is if injuries hit you heavy.
With that said, I already have a strong 8-man rotation. Even if I only bring back one more of my guys, I am GOOD!
If I bring back two of my guys, I am GREAT!
I have set things up that if someone pursues my players, they will have to pay big money and offer a multi-year deal to get them. And they will have to do it early. And risk overpaying before seeing the market establish itself. Rationally speaking, there are so many other options in other good quality players, one would be unwise to be willing to do that and jump out the window early, not knowing if they overpaid unnecessarily.
