Well, 76ers did flame out this year because of injuries. Maybe they thought they needed a Doctor.

I do think he's a better pick than D'Antoni and Ty Lue.

Most logical thinking people understand that Kawhi ruined that team. Very little to do with Doc.

How so? Load management?

The Clippers were fine the season before. Chemistry was great. Team was playing good basketball. Then Kawhi comes in and guts the entire team. The players took on his nonchalant attitude towards the regular season and self imploded when chemistry and continuity was needed in a playoff format.
Kawhi isn't the only change from last year's team tho. In my opinion PG **** the team up more than kawhi.

I agree Brooklyn would've been a great fit with the talent they have there. Would've required less coaching and more managing, which is Doc's strength.

Doc rivers played in the NBA for 14 and has coached for 21 years. Thats what 35 years in the game but yet he's not an x and o's guy? I have to wonder if there is some sort of racial component behind this criticism

I don't think that the number of years you spend in the game is indicative of whether or not your style is to be more authoritative when coaching or to let the players figure out strategy and just manage minutes. Whether you are hands-on or hands-off is largely orthogonal to whether or not you are skilled at the X's and O's of basketball as well.

I think that trying to bring race into the discussion doesn't really have merit either. There's just no evidence of this. You're literally just being wildly speculative.

Didn't really matter who they picked. Brand screwed everything up with the Horford and Harris contracts.

Problem is when you load manage, your teammates will have a hard time following you if you say something. The best player should play an important part of setting the tone, which Kawhi wants no part of.

When you win, its all good but when you lose, things like this happen. The Raptors took issue with Kawhi last year too. It just happened he went into super human mode in the playoffs so the issues went away.

Well whatever the reason for the "criticism" as a sixer fan I am glad to have him. I don't care about his politics.

This is what happens when politics enters sports. I loved sports because it was one of the last remaining meritocracies in the world. Where the only thing that mattered was performance of the coach/athlete and we could all just ignore the triviality of skin color.

For the record, I've also stated countless times over the years that Phil Jackson's greatest strength was managing egos and that he wasn't a great x's/o's coach. That's what he hired Tex Winter for. Guess I'm racist against blacks and whites both now.

I'm thinking Doc seen the writing on the wall in that clippers locker room and was plotting his exit for some time. This just seems to quick, while other coaches haven't been offered jobs yet.

Good for Doc. That's a good move for him. The players will be excited to play for him.

We did with Brett Brown. Not really sure we can do that again with the team in win now mode.

I guess it's not a bad hire since Philly is technically in "win-now" mode. They needed a veteran coach who is good with the players, and Doc definitely fits that bill.

I don't think it will lead to a title, but that has more to do with the roster than Doc.

Not sure how.

Rivers isn't great but he's not bad. Good leader with his players and does his best work when the expectations are minimal. This could be a low key great move for Philly. You literately can't say anything positive about Brown on the other hand. Should have been fired years ago.

Albeit not following sixers super closely, Brown did take Raps to the last possession of game 7 last year. It seems to me the problem is more on FO and ownership. They went all in last year for no reason (but did get a chance to contend for one year) by trading every asset besides Simmons and Embiid, and that set up for the failure of this year too. If they stayed pat they would have been in a much better situation for a foreseeable future.

You are absolutely correct. However based on all the news the sixers were dead set on a recycled coach unfortunately. It it wasn't for doc they probably would of hired D'Antoni who I think would of been alot worse

I don’t get how Doc is so coveted around the league by front offices. I mean he’s obv not a bad coach but not one of the best. He seems solid but unspectacular and yet keeps landing these plum roles so easily.
